Lillian Nash Hunter Turner, 87, of 1075 U.S. Highway 17 South, Elizabeth City, NC died Friday, October 30, 2009, at W.R. Winslow Memorial Home, Elizabeth City, NC. Born in Camden County, NC, she was the daughter of the late John James Nash and the late Pearl Alberston Nash and was the widow of Mr. B.F. Turner. Mrs. Turner was a member of McBride United Methodist Church and was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star, South Mills Chapter 270.

Mrs. Turner is survived by her daughter, Janet Hunter Cooke of Elizabeth City, NC; sons, A.B. Hunter, Jr. of Elizabeth City, NC, Steve Hunter of Murfreesboro, NC, and Harry Hunter of Appoka, FL; sister, Elizabeth Jordan of Florence, SC; twelve grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchildren. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Pearl Virginia Nash; and brothers, James Nash, Charlie Nash, Harry Nash, and Hershey Nash.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, November 2, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Rev. Wade Bennett officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 5:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home, and at other times at the residence of Janet Cooke, 1041 Northside Road, Elizabeth City, NC. Thomas Medford Braddy, 85, formerly of Elizabeth City, NC died Saturday, October 31, 2009 in Greensboro, NC. Mr. Braddy, a native of Pasquotank County, was the son of the late Thadeus Filmore Braddy and Annie Mary Messick Braddy and the husband of Frances Cornelius Braddy of the residence. He was a Tug Boat Captain, a member of Calvary Assembly of God in Greensboro, NC, and a former member of New Life Assembly of God in Elizabeth City, NC.

Besides his wife he is survived by three daughters, Marlene Braddy of Durham, NC, Darlene Augustine and husband John of Bayville, NJ, Melissa Griffith and husband Matt of Greensboro, NC; a son, Don Braddy and wife Margaret of Chester, VA; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Clay Manos officiating. ‘Bug’ Cason, Jr. 84, went home to be with his heavenly father, Friday, October 30, 2009. Mr. Cason was born in Virginia Beach, June 27, 1925. He was the son of the late Wilbur and Aleen Cason. Mr. Cason is survived by his wife of 63 years Jeanette White Cason. Besides his wife he is survived by three daughters Wanda Borg (Steve), Debbie Wright , Anita Smith (Brian), his aunt Blanch Rercha, 9 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and several nieces and nephews and many cousins and friends. He was a member of the Knotts Island Baptist Church, the American Legion # 0113, VFW # 1211 and Knotts Island Rurtian Club.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11:00 am at Knotts Island Baptist Church with Pastors Scott Manns Sr. and Frank Jennings officiating. Burial will follow at Knotts Island Cemetery.

George C. Bingaman, III

George Chrisman Bingaman, III, 88, passed away on Friday, October 30, 2009 at his residence in Frisco, NC. Born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late George C. Bingaman, II and the late Mamie Weeks Bingaman. He is predeceased by his wife, Freda Roan Bingaman and also predeceased by his brother, Clarence Bingaman and his son, George C. Bingaman, IV.

Mr. Bingaman graduated from Catawba College, attended Vanderbilt University and also served in the U.S. Army. He was a Real Estate Broker in Atlanta, GA and the Outer Banks of NC.

He will be remembered as an active participant in the Senior Olympics and for his love of gardening, reading, traveling, ballroom and square dancing, and duck hunting. He especially loved his house, looking out over the water, and always enjoyed a good glass of wine.

Mr. Bingaman is survived by his daughter, Debra Romas, and husband James, of Galena, Ohio and his granddaughter, Kelly Romas, also of Galena. He is also survived by one sister, Clara Morgan, and one brother, Gilbert Bingaman, both of Port Charlotte, Florida.

A Memorial Service is planned for a later date. However, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made, in Mr. Bingaman’s Memory, to Hatteras Island Meals, P.O. Box 854, Buxton, NC 27920.

Arwen Domiel Harman Burns, 30, of Marietta, GA, tragically passed away Tuesday, October 27, 2009 in Marietta, GA. Born in Greensboro, NC, she was the daughter of Lisa Harman and the late Paul Richard Harman, II and was the wife of John R. Burns. She was a graduate of Northeastern High School, Elizabeth City, NC, and of the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. Arwen was employed in the insurance industry for several years. She was a beloved wife, mother, sister, daughter, and friend and will be immensely missed by all.

Besides her husband and her mother, Arwen is survived by her daughter, Erin Grace Burns; her brothers, Hunter K. Harman of Elizabeth City, NC, and Paul Harman of Colorado; a sister, Laura Harman of Greensboro, NC; and grandparents, Polly Gifford Harman of Sebastian, FL, Wilton and Faye Potter of Zionville, NC, and Clarence and Chris Warnstaff of Virginia Beach, VA.

A memorial service will take place Sunday, November 1, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, Elizabeth City, NC by The Rev. Brent A. Melton. Burial will take place in Princess Anne Memorial Park, Virginia Beach, VA, where she will be interred with her father. The family will receive friends immediately following the service upstairs in the auditorium of the parish house. A second memorial service will take place Thursday, November 5, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 3906 W. Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, NC. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Erin Burns Educational Trust, in care of Lisa Harman, 906 Courthouse Lane, Elizabeth City, NC 27909, to assist with the educational expenses of Arwen’s beloved daughter. Bessie Carnes Kramer, 82, passed away on Thursday, October 29, 2009. Born in Rome, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late James Euclid Carnes and Catherine Dempsey Carnes. She is predeceased by her husband, Theodore Charles Kramer and her siblings; three sisters and thirteen brothers. She is survived by her son, Theodore C. ‘Ted’ Kramer, Jr. of Manteo, NC and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Kramer lived in the Richmond, Virginia area for several years and, after her husband’s death, served as President of Kramer Brothers, Inc. She retired to Manteo and enjoyed spending time with family, friends, and her special dog, Magnum.

A Visitation will be held from 6 ‘ 8:00 pm on Friday, October 30, 2009 at Twiford Funeral Home in Manteo. A Funeral Service will be held at Bliley’s Funeral Home, Central Chapel, in Richmond, VA on Monday, November 2, 2009 at 2:00 pm, with a Visitation before the service, from 1 ‘ 2:00 pm. Burial will occur in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Ralph Henry Holder, II, 65 of 106 Camellia Drive, Moyock, NC died Wednesday, October 28, 2009, in the Chesapeake General Hospital. He was born on December 11, 1943 in Clarksville, TN to the late Ralph Henry Holder, Sr. and Betty Johnson Holder. Mr. Holder retired from the US Navy as a Senior Chief after 26 years of service, having served in the submarine service. He was a member of the American Legion Post 288, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disable American Veterans and Fleet Reserves.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Connie Rhine Holder of the home; a daughter, Jeanette (Jan) Holder of Moyock, NC; a son, Ralph Henry Holder, III, and wife, Lisa, of Flat, TX. Also surviving is a sister, Mary Ann Irvin of Moyock, NC; four brothers, Francis L. Holder of Iran, Stephen S. Holder of Peach Orchard, AR, James W. Holder and wife, Louise, of Jonesboro, AR and Patrick B. Holder and wife, Cindy, of Peach Orchard, AR; two grandchildren, Grace Anne Holder and Josh Wilkins.

Timothy Earl Etheridge, 43, formerly of 311 Bartlett Road, Shawboro, NC died Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at Sentara Barco Nursing Center, Barco, NC. Born in Pasquotank County, NC, he was the son of the late Walter Flay Etheridge and of Mrs. Carolyn Cartwright Etheridge of Shiloh, NC.

Along with his mother, Mr. Etheridge is survived by his sister, Kimberly Trott and husband Ernest of Camden, NC; a niece, Victoria Trott of Camden, NC; a nephew, Nicholas Trott of Camden, NC; and several cousins. The family wishes to thank the staff of Sentara Barco Nursing Center for the love and care they provided during Mr. Etheridge’s illness.

Roger James Kent, 75, of 114 Etheridge Road, Shawboro, NC died Wednesday, October 28, 2009, at Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City, NC. Born in Detroit, MI, he was the son of the late Harry James Kent and the late Mary Agnes Grendysa Kent Kesckes, and was the loving husband of the late Mrs. Melody Ruth Shadd Kent. Mr. Kent was a veteran, having served in the United States Navy as a Chief Radioman. He was a member of the St. Katherine Drexel Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post 6060. Mr. Kent was an active member of the Virginia Electronics Association for many years. He was the owner of Kent’s TV and Radio repair for thirty-five years. He was a loving husband, son, father and brother and will be dearly missed.

Mr. Kent is survived by his daughters, Cheryl Johnson of Shawboro, NC, Lori Byrd of Moyock, NC, and Karen Jenners of Charles Town, WV; two brothers, Darell Kesckes of Dearborn, MI, and John Kesckes of Dearborn, MI; nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Providence Baptist Church, 765 Shawboro Road, Shawboro, NC with The Very Rev. Jim Buchholz, V.F. and Rev. Charles Wellons officiating. Military honors will be rendered by the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post 6060. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel and at other times at the residence. Mildred Collins Powell, 90, of 3907 Caratoke Highway, Barco, NC died Wednesday, October 28, 2009, at Sentara Barco Nursing Center, Barco, NC. Born in Hurlock, MD, she was the daughter of the late John Wilson and Hattie Helen Bowdle Collins and was the widow of Mr. John Thomas Powell. Mrs. Powell was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army from 1944 to 1954 as a Supply Sergeant. During her service in the Army she was awarded the Good Conduct Medal with one Clasp, the World War II Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal, and the National Defense Medal. From 1973 until 1984 Mrs. Powell had worked as a shipping and receiving clerk for Firestone Tire Company. She was a Presbyterian.

Mrs. Powell is survived by her daughter, Donna Jackson and husband Eldon; grandchildren, Denise Jackson, and Robert Jackson; great grandchild, Nalani Jackson; a sister, Annabelle LeCompte and husband Leonard; nieces, Jill Benjoya, Cindy Picard and husband Jerry, and Paulette Traverse; and nephews, Jack Garris, and Bill Smith and wife Betty.
