Stewart Alton, Jr.
Stewart John Alton, Jr., 79, of Manteo, died Saturday December 26, 2009 in his residence. Mr. Alton was born in Watertown, NY and was a retired pipe fitter. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy.
He was the son of the late Stewart John Alton, Sr. and Mary Louise Alton.
Surviving are three daughters; Amy, Ana and LaWanda, three sons; Ernie, Michael and Skipper; one sister, Ruth; adopted children, Jose, Keri, Joslyn, and Chelsea; 7 grandchildren and 8 great-granchildren.
Memorial services are planned for a later date.

Norwood “Dick” Armstrong
Manteo, NC
Norwood “Dick” Clinton Armstrong, 88, passed away at his residence on Tuesday, December 22, 2009. Born in Tarboro, NC, he was the son of the late Dorsey Edward Armstrong and Amanda E. Cratch Armstrong. He is predeceased by his wife, Frances Armstrong as well as several brothers and sisters.
Mr. Armstrong was an avid golfer, hunter, and fisherman. He proudly served in the U.S. Army and was involved in the Pacific Campaign of World War II and later in life, had worked in the Maintenance Dept. at the Lost Colony. He was active in church and was one of the founding members of Faith Baptist Church in Manteo, NC.
Mr. Armstrong is survived by his daughter, Tina, and husband Orviss Kit O’Neal of Frisco, NC, his son Dickie Armstrong of Manteo, NC, his grandchildren Jeremiah Armstrong, Taz O’Neal, Amanda Armstrong, Eliza Kitchens and his 3 great-grandchildren, Emily, Lance, and Whitney.
A Memorial Service was held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, December 27, 2009 at Faith Baptist Church in Manteo, NC with the Rev. Ronnie Midgett officiating.

Leslie S. Bailey, Jr.

Leslie S. Bailey, Jr. passed away December 11, 2009. Mr. Bailey was born in Norfolk, VA to the late Leslie Bailey , Sr. and Hazel Davis Eddins. He worked as a welder for Bailey Welding Corp for 42 years and had served in the US Army National Guard for 10 years.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 47 years, Alice M. Bailey; son Steven L. Bailey of Suffolk, VA; daughter Deborah A. Augeri of Elizabeth City, NC; and grandsons, David L. Hutchison, Nathan S. Augeri and Kody R. Augeri.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 11:00 am at Twiford Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake. Resident of Currituck County, NC
George William Aulabaugh, Sr., 74, of 1181 Waterlily Road, Coinjock, NC, died Monday, December 7, 2009 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He was born in Berkeley Springs, WV, to the late Harold J. Aulabaugh and Emma Ambrose Aulabaugh. Mr. Aulabaugh was a retired carpenter. He was a member of Sharon United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his companion, Kathy Corp of the residence; a son, George W. Aulabaugh, Jr. of Inwood, WV; three step children, JoAnne Pritchard of Portsmouth, VA, Billy Elkin of Panama City, FL, and Linville Elkin of Chesapeake, VA; two sisters, Ruth Gibel of Pasadena, MD and Emma Jo Santana of Millersville, MD; and one grandchild, Sydney Aulabaugh. Mr. Aulabaugh was preceded in death, by a long time companion, Berta Elkin.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. at Sharon United Methodist Church, 285 Poplar Branch Road, Poplar Branch, NC with Rev. Renee Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Laurel Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive family and friends following the service in the church social hall. Hallie Alligood
Hallie Waters Alligood, 92, of 700 Maple Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Friday, December 4, 2009 at Albemarle Hospital. Born in Beaufort County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Jaytha Herington Waters and Estelle Paul Waters and was the widow of Kearney Eugene Alligood. Mrs. Alligood enjoyed doing volunteer work and she was a member of First Christian Church.
Mrs. Alligood is survived by her daughter, Judy A. Bailey and husband Larry W.; a son, Gene Alligood and wife Sharon Kay; and four grandchildren, Skip Alligood, David Alligood, Tucker Bailey, and Hallie Bailey, all of Chocowinity, NC.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 7, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at First Christian Church with Rev. Bill Roberts and Rev. Charles McKenzie officiating. Annie Elizabeth Berry Abrams, 75, 618 Body Road, Hertford, NC died Friday, December 4, 2009 at the Brian Center, Hertford, NC. Mrs. Abrams, a native of Hyde County, was the daughter of the late Henry Carrol Berry and Mabel Gibbs Berry. She attended Camden Church of Christ and was a homemaker.
Mrs. Abrams is survived by two daughters, Lynn Feragen and husband Edward of The Woodlands, TX and Beverly Benton of WY; a son, Ernest Benton and wife Charlene of Waycross, GA; two sisters, Addie Perry of Hertford, NC and Nellie Clark of Rocky Mount, NC; four grandchildren Desira Benton, Tiffany Benton, Nicole Feragen and Mitchell Feragen, and several nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by a sister, Mary B. Ziegler and a brother Lee Berry.
A funeral service will be Monday, December 7, 2009 at 3:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Minister Mike Duffer. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. Kathleen Hooper Gaskins
Buxton, NC
Kathleen Hooper Gaskins, 90, died on Friday, December 4, 2009 in a Norfolk, VA hospital. Mrs. Gaskins was born and raised in Kinnakeet, NC, the daughter of Luther and Dora Hooper. Kathleen married Edgar Chadwick Gaskins, Sr., her husband of 57 years, in July 1940. They spent their early married years in Norfolk, VA and moved back to Hatteras Island after Edgar retired in the late 60′s. She was one of the oldest women in Buxton.
Kathleen was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar in 1997, her brother, Luther Grandy Hooper and wife, Rita, and a sister, Edith Hooper Gray and brother-in-law, Carl Gray.
Kathleen graduated from Kinnakeet High School in 1936 and went on to attend St. Vincent’s School of Nursing. She loved taking yearly trips around the country with her sister and friends. Quilting and sewing were some of her favorite hobbies and she enjoyed teaching her skills to others. Her cooking skills were renowned and she loved having the entire family to the house for Sunday dinners. Miss Kathleen’s favorite past time was watching the Atlanta Braves, keeping a journal of the ‘stats’ for each player and learning their personal histories. She had the trip of her lifetime when she traveled to Atlanta in 1998 to see her beloved Braves play. Kathleen was born and raised in the Kinnakeet Assembly of God Church and after moving back to Hatteras Island, attended Lighthouse Assembly of God in Buxton.
She is survived by a daughter, Ann Gaskins Jennette Jordan and husband, Randy of Buxton; a son, Edgar Chadwick ‘Buddy’ Gaskins, Jr. and wife, Mary Ann of Chesapeake, VA; a daughter, Kathleen Gaskins Mackenzie and J.T. Mayis of Buxton. Miss Kathleen had six grandchildren, Suzanne, Leo, Holly, Adam, Chad, and Kevin; three step-grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and five step-great grandchildren. Miss Kathleen had many special people in her life that brought her joy and happiness, her nieces, Debbie Etheridge, Carolyn Gray Lett, Tina and two special grandchildren, Kaylee and Chaz.
Funeral services will be held at Lighthouse Assembly of God, Buxton, on Sunday, December 6, 2009 at 2:00 pm with Rev. David Stowe and Rev. Dwight Burrus officiating. Burial will be in the Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Twiford Island Chapel, Hatteras on Saturday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

Roy E. Merrell, Sr.
Native of Currituck, NC
Roy Edward Merrell, Sr., 94 of 5940 Caratoke Highway, Currituck, NC died Friday, December 4, 2009 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Mr. Merrell, a native of Currituck County, was the son of the late Isaac Holly Merrell and Paulina Woodhouse Merrell and the widower of Hilda Bryant Merrell. He was a retired welder from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, a U.S. Army Veteran of WW II having served in the Phillipines, and a member of Poplar Branch Baptist Church. Mr. Merrell was an avid sportsman, especially duck and goose hunting on Currituck Sound.
Mr. Merrell is survived by a daughter, Sandra Merrell Kaylor and husband Robert S. of Fayetteville, NC; two sons, R. Edward Merrell, Jr., and wife Linda of Cibolo, TX, and Randy Lee Merrell and wife Mary Beth of Elizabeth City, NC; three sisters, Marie Henderson, Mary Franssen, and Lessie Pugh; five grandchildren Bryan E. Merrell and wife Dawn, Shannon M. Deavers and husband Tracey, Austin S. Kaylor and wife Serena, Zeb M. Kaylor, and Justin L. Merrell and wife Tesha; and four great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Monday, December 7, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Bill Thorn officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Captain Dixie Walker Daniels, 68, of Wanchese, NC died on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at the Outer Banks Hospital. Mr. Daniels was born in Wanchese, the son of Llewellyn Cudworth Daniels and Vera Midgett Daniels. He was a retired tug boat captain and commercial fisherman. He was a member of Wanchese Assembly of God and The Gideons International.
Besides his parents, Mr. Daniels was preceded in death by a brother, Llewellyn ‘Sonny Boy’ Daniels, and a sister, Joan Biggs.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Stetson Daniels of the residence; three daughters, Barbara Hayes of Wanchese, Tori Daniels and husband, Faron of Wanchese, and Rose Whipple and husband, Craig of Ledard, CT; one son, David Wade Daniels and wife, Cristie of Wanchese; two sisters, Bebe Tillett and Myra Thompson and husband, Keith, all of Wanchese; three brothers, Llewellyn Midgett and wife, Ruby of Wilmington, NC, Jimmy Tucker Daniels and wife, Merle and Bobby Luther Daniels and wife, Valerie, all of Wanchese; a brother-in-law, Tommy Biggs of Manteo; a sister-in-law, Ede Daniels of Wanchese; and eight grandchildren, Misty Cordesio, Blaze Hayes, Fara Daniels, Dallas Daniels, Jared Whipple, Lauren Whipple, Taryn Daniels and Dylan Daniels.

Boyd better known as “Bo” was a native of Knotts Island, NC. Served a small period of time in the service. Bo loved the outdoors especially fishing. Spent most of his time working with his hands, carpentry was his specialty. Bo could make anything out of nothing.
