Shepherd Scott Kiker, infant son of Gregory and Megan Kiker, of 146 Long Pine Road, South Mills, NC passed away Saturday, January 30, 2010.

In addition to his parents, Shepherd is survived by his sisters, Lily Lucille Kiker and Kaylie Marie Pitts; brothers, Max McCarthy Kiker and Cooper Cruse Kiker; maternal grandparents, William and Jeanell McCarthy of Jacksonville, FL; paternal grandparents, Michael and Debbie Cruse of Dalton, GA; great grandparents, C.L. Cruse and Thelma Weems; aunts and uncles, Chris and Brandy Thomas, Keith and Valerie Cruse, and Brandon and Tracy Cruse; and numerous cousins, great aunts and uncles all of GA. He was preceded in death by his great grandmother, Lucille Cruse; his great grandfather, Douglas Weems; and his great grandparents, Ross and Nellie Kiker.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at New Life Assembly of God, 1958 N. Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909 with Rev. Clay Manos officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the New Life Assembly of God Preschool and Academy. Eula Payne

Eula Basnight Payne, 85, of Payne Road, Manteo died Saturday, January 30, 2010 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Born in Washington County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Lennie L. and Ida Wynn Basnight. She was the foundation of her family and a faithful member of Manteo Baptist Church.

Mrs. Payne is survived by her husband, Captain Z.F. Payne of the home; a daughter, Joyce Bell of Manteo; two sons, Donald Ray Payne of Texas and Jerry Lee Payne of Currituck; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at Twiford Funeral Home, Manteo on Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at 1:00 PM with the Rev. Ken Simpson officiating. Burial will be in Cudworth Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at the funeral home on Tuesday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Billy Graham’s Samaritan’s Purse, P.O. Mildred Sharber

The title “Best Grandmother in America” has now become available again.
The woman who held that title for over 40 years, Mildred Williams Sharber, ended a life well lived and has now “graduated” to heaven after 93 years on this earth. Mildred began her life in the Newland area of Pasquotank County and spent her entire life in that county. She was born the daughter of Frank and Bertie Williams on May 1, 1916. She was the second of their five children. She married her grade-school sweetheart, Bagley Sharber, on July 9, 1940 and stayed by his side until his passing in May 1987. During her life she helped Bagley on the farm, helping raise many chickens, pigs, cows, and countless crops and gardens, as well as three children. In her younger days Mildred was well known for making biscuits and cookies from scratch, homemade butter, and cooking some of the finest country cooking in the world. Mildred became a follower of Jesus Christ as a youth during a revival at Ramoth Gilead Baptist Church. After marriage, she joined Newland United Methodist Church and during the confirmation process there she renewed her relationship with Jesus and retained it until she finished her race and saw Him face-to-face. She leaves behind a legacy of steadfast faith, and many loved ones. She was predeceased by a sister, Grace MacLaurin and brother, Richard Williams.

Surviving her are her daughter, June Fornes and husband Jimmy, her son, Willie Bagley Jr. and wife Jeanett, and daughter, Betty Lee Ivey and husband Douglas; as well as a sister, Mary Sawyer, and brother, Frank S. Williams Jr. She also leaves behind 9 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday Feb. 3, 2010 at 2:00 PM in Twiford Funeral Home, Memorial Chapel 405 East Church St. in Elizabeth City, NC by Rev. Ed Rutenkroger, her grandson Dr. Mark A. Howard and Rev. Toni Wood. Burial will follow in the Whitney Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial contributions be made to BBN, PO Box 7300, Charlotte, NC 28241-9943, or to Albemarle Hospice PO Box 189, Elizabeth City, NC 27907-0189, or to the Newland United Methodist Church Maintenance Fund, % J.C. Ruth Rainier

Ruth Merrill Horne Rainier, 92, of 3140 West Main Street Extended, Elizabeth City, NC died Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at her residence. Mrs. Rainier, a native of Jacksonville, NC, was the daughter of the late William Hill Horne and Ruth Merrill Horne and the widow of Billy Mason Rainier. She was a retired public school teacher and counselor and attended Victory Baptist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Mina Moffett Watkins of Elizabeth City, NC; five grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by a daughter, Rebecca M. Lawrence; a son, Robert Harvey Moffett; two sisters; and a brother.

A funeral service will be Friday, January 29, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Victory Baptist Church with the Rev. Reggie Parker officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk, VA. The family will receive friends at the residence and immediately after the service at the church. Paul Sutton

Paul Sutton

Paul M. Sutton, age 85 of New Castle, died Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at Glen Oaks Health Campus following a brief illness. He was born November 4, 1924, in New Castle, a son of the late Hubert and Velva (Ratliff) Sutton.

A 1943 graduate of New Castle High School, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. He retired from Chrysler Corp. in 1982 after over 36 years of service. During the late 1940’s and 1950’s, he was a member of the Sutton Family Band that played at Baker Park and around the area. Paul started the Sutton Strutters Square Dance Club, and taught square dancing and called them for many years. While living in North Carolina, Paul was involved in the Outer Banks Shag Club, where he danced and taught dancing. An avid woodcarver, Paul had also owned and operated Sutton’s Stained Glass in New Castle and Centerville.

He is survived by two sons, Monty (wife, Melissa) Sutton of Hagerstown, Jon (wife, Peggy) Sutton of Greenwood; a daughter, Paula Robinson of Keller, TX; two grandsons, John and Kerry Sutton, both of Hagerstown; three sisters, Treva Cross of Indianapolis, June (husband, Ray) Cruxford of Nampa, Idaho, and Margaret Kuhn of Virginia Beach, VA; two brothers, Bob Sutton of Lake Anne, MI, and Doyle Sutton of Greenfield; nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Jean (Bowman) Sutton in 2001; a sister, Joan Neal, and two brothers, Jack and Walter Dale Sutton.

Services will be at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with the Rev. Bob Fannin officiating. Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday before the service. Another visitation will be held on Friday, February 5, 2010 at Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, North Carolina from 11:00am until 1:00pm, followed by a graveside service with military honors conducted by VFW Post #6060 at 2:00pm in Laurel Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Poplar Branch, Currituck County, North Carolina. Bobby Gene Caison, 73, of 141G NW Backwoods Road, Moyock, NC died Monday, January 25, 2010 at his residence. He was a native of Guilford, NC and the son of Estell Caison. He was predeceased by his wife, Joyce Annette Maness Caison. He was a retired carpenter with RG Electric.

Edwin Clough

Edwin Knickerbocker Clough, 86, died Monday, January 25, 2010, at Sentara-Barco Nursing Home after a long fight with Alzheimer’s Disease. The son of the late Effie Knickerbocker Clough and the late Dr. Martin Clough of New York, he was born in Montclair, New Jersey on April 28, 1923 and attended Stonybrook Academy on Long Island, New York. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII as a Radioman. Afterwards he went on to work for the Singer Company for 35 years. He managed several stores throughout Virginia, including the Newmarket store in Newport News, and retired from Singer in 1979. He then worked at Belk’s Department Store in Elizabeth City for 10 years and finished his retail career at Lowe’s in Chesapeake, VA where he worked as a greeter, he loved to talk to people. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by a granddaughter, Janel Clough and a great-granddaughter, Madelyn Clough.

Mr. Clough is survived by his wife of 62 years, Vereda Mae Clough (nee Keen) of the residence in Kitty Hawk, three sons, Edwin K. Clough, Jr. and wife Deanna of Oxford, Michigan, Stephen Clough and wife Karen, of Shawnee, Kansas, Stan Clough of Kill Devil Hills and a daughter, Alinda Clough De La Hoya of Newport News, Virginia.

He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, Charissa Clough Lubic, of Newport News, VA, Matthew Clough and wife Meghan of Bentonville, Arkansas, Joshua Clough of Shawnee, Kansas, Lance Corporal Aaron Will USMC, of Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, Nicholas Will of Newport News, Marina, Dylan, and Grace Clough of Kill Devil Hills, as well as Adam Way and wife, Sherry of Clinton Township, Michigan. Also left to cherish his memory are his three great-grandchildren, Colleen and Bethany Lubic of Newport News and Alyssa Way of Clinton Township, Michigan.

A Celebration of His Life will be held at Kitty Hawk Baptist Church at 2:00 pm, January 29, 2010 with Pastor Donald B. Teears officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 pm, prior to the service. Vince Chory

Thomas Vincent (Vince) Chory, 75, of 214 Poplar Drive, Elizabeth City, NC died Monday, January 25, 2010 at his residence. He was born on February 24, 1934 in Pasquotank County, NC to the late William Stanton and Vietta Davis Chory. Mr. Chory was a retired electronic engineer and an avid musician. He was a member of the Eureka Lodge #317 AF & AM and a veteran, having served in the US Coast Guard.

A sister-in-law, Gerald W. Chory of Elizabeth City, NC, a niece, and numerous cousins survive him. Three brothers, Billy, Roy and Arwood Chory, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, January 28, 2010, at 3:00pm in Twiford Memorial Chapel, Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC by Rev. Jeffery Russell and will be followed by Masonic Rites conducted by Eureka Lodge. The family will be at the home of his cousin, Bill Long and family, 214 Poplar Drive, Elizabeth City, NC.
