William Small
William Adolphus Small, 87, of Weeksville died Sunday, February 28, 2010, at Winslow Memorial Home. Mr. Small was the son of Gaston Elvin Small, Sr. and Essie Jennings Small. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Margaret Reed Small.
Mr. Small is survived by his children, Linda Small Etheridge & husband Oliver, Margaret Di Small & husband Neal Blinken, William F. Small, II & wife JoAnn and Jeffrey R. Small & wife Suzan. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Nancy E. Sugg & husband Taylor, Olivia Sugg, Kelly Bray, Matt Bray, Will Small, Zach Small, Hannah Small, Jess Godfrey, Kathryn Godfrey, Reed Small and Maggie Small, as well as his brother, Gaston E. Small, Jr., and his sister, Marjorie Small Berry.
Mr. Small graduated from Weeksville High School and served as an aviation mechanic in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He loved to fly, was a farmer and real estate developer and was president of G.E. Small & Sons, Inc. and Carolina Dunes, Inc.
Past service includes a term as president of the N.C. Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Association. He also served on the board of the National Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Association, the board of the National Potato Association, the board of trustees of Albemarle Hospital, the board of trustees of The College of the Albemarle, the Pasquotank County Planning Board and the Elizabeth City State University Foundation Board of Directors. In addition, he was a charter member of Duck Woods Country Club, a member of Old Timers and a lifelong member of Newbegun United Methodist Church where, for many years, he was finance chairman.
Graveside services will be held Friday, March 5, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service. Rodgene Blake
Rodgene Hollingsworth Blake, 78, of 106 South McMorrine Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Saturday, February 27, 2010 at Albemarle Hospital. Born in Wayne County, NC she was the daughter of the late Roger Augustus and Pearl Mary Lucas Hollingsworth, and the widow of Harold Reide Blake, Sr. She was a retired insurance salesperson at Charlotte Liberty Mutual, and a member of Women of the Moose, Greenville Chapter #2362.
Mrs. Blake is survived by one daughter Pamela Trueblood and husband Martin of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons Harold Reide “Buddy” Blake, Jr. and wife Debra of Ayden, NC, and Gurney Richard “Ricky” Blake II and wife Connie of Grimesland, NC; one sister Kathleen “Kathy” Goodson and husband Stewart of Greenville, NC; one brother Roger Augustus Hollingsworth and wife Peggy of Greenville, NC; nine grandchildren Dallas Taylor, Reide Blake, Jordan Blake, Gurney Richard Blake III, Jennifer Nicole Blake, Kristy Michelle Sermons, Joshua Lee Blake, Matthew Trueblood, and Martin Trueblood; and nine great grandchildren De’zhanae Whitaker, Jayden Whitaker, Layonee Whitaker, Damian Blake, Sierra Blake, Gurney Blake IV, Chase Jefferson, Cheyenne Jefferson and Marty Trueblood. She was also predeceased by two sisters Deloris McDougal and Mandola Stanley; and one brother Charles Augustus Hollingsworth.
The body will be cremated and a private memorial service will be held at a later date. Theodore Snyder, Jr.
Theodore Edward Snyder, Jr., 79 of 471 Sawmill Road, Elizabeth City, NC died Saturday, February 27, 2010 at Albemarle Hospital. A native of Cattaragus County, NY, he was the son of the late Theodore E. Snyder, Sr., and Edna Markham Snyder and the husband of Catherine Rogerson Snyder of the residence. He was a self-employed builder of custom cabinets and a Methodist.
Besides his wife he is survived by a son, Jack DeMik and wife Kathleen and their children Christy Blower and Candace DeMik of Charlotte, MI; three step-sons, Dennis James White and wife Annette of South Mills, NC, Wilson parker Long and wife Ruth of Elizabeth City, NC, and Timothy Leroy Long of Hertford, NC; five sisters, Betty L. Pacyon of Buffalo, NY, Shirley M. Butterfield of Dewittville, NY, Marilyn L. Wendel of Lancaster, NY, Patricia a. Binder of Darien Center, NY and Elaine M. Johnson of Corfu, NY; and a brother, Robert A. Snyder of Wayland NY.
A funeral service will be Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Roy Moritz officiating. Entombment will be at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Ernest Saunders
Ernest Wade Saunders, 83, of 106 South Mallard Court, Grandy, NC died at the Albemarle Hospital on Friday, February 26, 2010. Born in Randolph County, NC, he was the son of the late Aaron and Willie Louise Coble Saunders. He was a retired First Class Gunners Mate and World War II Veteran in the U.S. Navy, sold insurance, and was a member of the American Legion Post 288, in Coinjock, NC.
Mr. Saunders is also survived by one daughter, Maureen Elizabeth Peake of Grandy, NC; one son, Dennis Michael Saunders of Randolph Co., NC; former wife, Elizabeth Saunders; one-step-son, Tim Greene; two brothers, Worth Saunders of Randolph, Co., NC and Harvey Saunders; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted Friday, March 5, 2010 at 2:00 pm in the American Legion Post 288 in Coinjock, NC with Military Honors provided by William Clarence Jackson VFW Post 6060.

Jeanette Wesner
Jeanette Louise Pytko Wesner, 75, of 1802 West Main Street Extended, Elizabeth City, NC died Friday, February 26, 2010 at her residence. Born in Adams, MA, she was the daughter of the late Frank C. and Nellie Bator Pytko and was the wife of the late Gerhardt H. Wesner, Sr. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and a loving wife and mother.
Mrs. Wesner is survived by her son, Gerhardt “Jerry” H. Wesner, Jr. and wife Gloria Twiddy of Camden, NC; a sister, Sophie P. Buck and husband John of Savoy, MA; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Monday, March 1, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with The Very Rev. James Buchholz, V.F. officiating. Marion Rowe
Marion Walter Rowe, 80, of 118 Lee Circle, Elizabeth City, NC went home to be with his Lord and Savior Thursday, February 25, 2010 at Sentara Norfolk Hospital. Mr. Rowe, a native of Clarksburg, WV, was the son of the late Orion Arthur Rowe, Sr. and Charlotte Virginia Cottrill Rowe and was the husband of Hilda Amos Rowe of the residence. He was a retired Vice President and General Manager for C. I. Whitten Transfer Company and was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church. He did volunteer work for the local Habitat for Humanity and for the Huntington Crisis Line and Habitat for Humanity.
Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Linda Rowe Webb and husband Randy of Tequesta, FL, and Marian Rowe MacGowan and husband Andrew of Elizabeth City, NC; a brother, Gene D. Rowe of Leesburg, FL; five grandchildren, Kimberly Lague, Heather Martin, Brooke Masten, Michael MacGowan, and Mathew MacGowan; and one great granddaughter, Hope Webb Lague. He was pre-deceased by two brothers, Orie Rowe, Jr., and Lynwood T. “Jack” Rowe; two sisters, Alice Roberts and Margaret “Mickie” Roberts.

Merlin John Kynaston, Sr., 51 of 103 Wesley Road, Shiloh, NC died Monday, February 22, 2010 at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Kynaston, a native of Salt Lake City, UT, was the son of the late Merlin Jay Kynaston and Lois Cloretta Giles Kynaston and the husband of Sherry Sue Williams Kynaston. He was the owner of Home Town Repair and a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Besides his wife he is survived by five daughters, Jamie Lynn Xenos and husband David, Danielle LaRae Baker and husband Kelli, Jennifer Nicole Skinner and husband Jonathan, Kristi Leigh Kynaston and Faith Johnson; three sons, Merlin John Kynaston, Jr. and wife Anastasia, Christopher Jay Kynaston, and Matthew Holloway Kynaston; three sisters, Susan Brown, Sharlene Rambo, and Sandra Butcher; a brother, Steve Kynaston; four grandchildren, Cheyanne Riley Xenos, Addeline Jo Xenos, Tristan Holloway Baker, and Kyle Scullion. He was pre-deceased by two sisters, Sharon Kynaston and Penny Martinez; and two brothers, Clyde Kynaston and Guy Kynaston.
Funeral services will be Friday, February 26, 2010 at 11:00 AM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with President Don Drake officiating. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery. Carolyn Bright
Carolyn Overman Bright, 78, of 1312 Salem Church Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, February 22, 2010 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC, to late George S. Overman and Beulah White Overman and was the widow of Carl Fleetwood “Pete” Bright. Mrs. Bright was a longtime member of Salem Baptist Church where she served as the Church’s Sunday School secretary and treasurer for many years and was also a longtime member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary.
Survivors include six sons, Ted Bright and wife Kay of Smithfield, VA, Nelson Bright and wife Donna of Phoenixville, PA, Mark Bright and wife Becky of Weeksville, NC, Wilbur “Buddy” Bright and wife Linda of Raleigh, NC, Bruce Bright and wife Tami of Durham, NC, and Todd Bright of Weeksville, NC; two sisters, Barbara Chory and husband Eugene and Ada Barco and husband Carlton; three brothers, Leonard Overman, Sr. and wife Viola, George Overman and wife Judy, and Leon Overman and wife Janet; a sister-in-law, Clara Mae Overman; eighteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Along with her husband and parents, Mrs. Bright was predeceased by a sister, Rebecca Overman and two brothers, Walter Overman and Joseph Ray Overman.

Ada Hassell Dail, 86, of 807 Beech Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Saturday, February 20, 2010 in Albemarle Hospital. Born in Pasquotank County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Steven Arthur and Sara Frances Hufton Hassell and was the wife of the late Alonzie Edward Dail. She was retired from the Elizabeth City Cotton Mill.
Mrs. Dail is survived by her daughters, Connie Dail Russell of Hertford, NC, and Bonnie Dail Lane of Wilson, NC; a sister, Lil Curles of Elizabeth City, NC; brothers, Luther Hassell and Linwood Hassell, both of Elizabeth City, NC; three grandchildren, Kim D. Crank of Elizabeth City, NC, Amy Russell of Hertford, NC, and Brandon Lane of Wilson, NC; and two great grandchildren, Brycen and Jasmyn Crank of Elizabeth City, NC. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Ronnie Edward Dail; a sister, Blanche Ange; and two brothers, Raymond Hassell and Wilbert Hassell.

Teresa Thompson
Teresa Mary Thompson passed on surrounded by her family on Friday, February 19, 2010, 4:55 p.m. at the age of 54. She was a woman of hope, courage, and celebration. She will be missed. Her love for her family and friends were very important in her life. She was an active community outreach volunteer for various causes that made a difference for all types of people and all wildlife.
Teresa is survived by her parents, Clete and Sue Thompson of Camden, NC; four sisters, Annette Thompson of Chesapeake, VA, Maryanne Gilbert of Jupiter, FL, Veronica Thompson of Poughkeepsie, NY, and Margaret Thompson of Waterbury, CT; her nieces, Jasmine, Karlene, and Michelle; and her nephews, David and Bart.
