Robert Glenn “Bob” Sawyer, Sr., 79, husband, father, pop, salesman, and sportsman, of 128 Ed Sawyer Lane, Barco, NC, died Tuesday, March 30, 2010, at Sentara Leigh Hospital. Mr. Sawyer was born in Currituck County, NC, the son of the late Edmond D. Sawyer and Hattie Morse Sawyer, and the widower of Barbara Tatem Sawyer. He was a member of Coinjock Baptist Church, Norview Masonic Lodge, Norfolk, VA for over 50 years, Scottish Rite, and a Khedive Shriner.

Mr. Sawyer is survived by two sons, Robert Glenn Sawyer, Jr. and wife, Julie, of Kill Devil Hills, NC and Donald Wayne Sawyer and wife, Heidi, of Waterlily, NC; four grandchildren, Robert Glenn Sawyer III and wife, Ashlynn, Mary Elizabeth Charlish and husband, Steve, Jesse Sawyer, and Katie Sawyer; and two great grandchildren, Robert Glenn Sawyer IV and Jack Douglas Charlish.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 3, 2010, at 3:00 p.m. at the Coinjock Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Wellons and Wayne Twiford officiating. Burial will be in the Sawyer Family Cemetery, Barco, NC. The family will receive friends Friday, April 2, 2010, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC and other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the American Heart Association. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is assisting the family

Carl Sullivan

Carl Edwin Sullivan, Jr., 57, of 170 Keeter Barn Road, South Mills, NC died Sunday, March 28, 2010 at his residence. Born in Virginia, he was the son of Lila Thomas Sullivan and the late Carl Edwin Sullivan, Sr. He was a carpenter.

Along with his mother, Mr. Sullivan is survived by a daughter, Tammy Sullivan of Orlando, FL.; sisters, Brenda Petty of Fredericksburg, VA, Judy Senters of South Mills, NC, and Kemberly Sawyer of Elizabeth City, NC; brothers, Jesse Sullivan and Michael Sullivan, both of South Mills, NC; and one grandchild, Brycen Sullivan.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Pastor Preston Pitchford officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service and at other times at the residence. Eduardo Zafra

Eduardo R. Zafra, 57, of Manteo died Saturday, March 27, 2010 in Norfolk, VA. Born in Trujillo, Peru, he was the son of the late Andres Alfonso Zafra and Valeria Lau Zafra.

Mr. Zafra is survived by his wife, Flor H. Zafra of the residence; three sons, Edward and Michael Zafra both of Manns Harbor and Mark Zafra of Manteo; a daughter, Jackelyn Zafra of Manteo; and several brothers and sisters.

A visitation will be held on Monday, March 29, 2010 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Manns Harbor Church of God. The funeral will immediately follow with Bishop Darrell Hooker officiating.

Robert Thomas, Jr.,

Robert Gordon Thomas, Jr., 78, of 928 Waterlilly Road, Coinjock, NC died Sunday March 28, 2010 in the Albemarle Hospital. Born in Wake County, NC, he was the son of the late Robert Gordon and Mrs. Bette Rose Phillips Thomas, Sr. He was a Real Estate Broker, former owner of Banjo Real Estate and Marketing, a graduate of the University of North Carolina, a member of the Lions Club, and Beach Buggy Association. Mr. Thomas was a veteran of the US Coast Guard, a member of the Jarvisburg Church of Christ, and was an avid fisherman.

Mr. Thomas is survived by his wife of twenty six years Kathy Wilkerson Thomas; two daughters Kelly Armstrong and husband Ian of Chesapeake, VA, and Holly Bloxam and husband Curtis of Seymour, CT; two sons David Thomas and wife Jackie of Manteo, NC, and Robert G. Thomas III of Kitty Hawk, NC; two step sons Nathan Maynard and wife Christie of Boone, NC, and Jeremy Maynard of Blowing Rock, NC; two grandchildren Amanda Armstrong and Jacquelyn Thomas; and two step grandchildren, Eden and Tristine Maynard.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Jarvisburg Church of Christ with Dennis Crehan officiating. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service and request that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the Jarvisburg Church of Christ, PO Box 16, Jarvisburg, NC 27947, or to ones favorite charity. Robert Buchanan

Robert James Buchanan, 58, of 1100 Horseshoe Road in Elizabeth City, NC died Thursday, March 25, 2010 at his residence. Mr. Buchanan was a native of New York, NY, son of the late Robert J. and Mrs. Cecelia Mallun Buchanan, and the husband of Sherry Modlin Buchanan. He was retired from the US Army, and was a member of William Clarence Jackson VFW Post 6060 where he was a member of the Honor Guard.

Along with his wife he is survived by a step daughter, Samantha Barfield of Washington, NC and a step grandchild. He was preceded in death by a sister Catherine Buchanan.

Marvin Horton

Marvin Lee Horton, 64, 136 Red Maple Avenue, Hertford, NC, died Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at the Brian Center of Hertford, NC. He was born in Norfolk, VA, to the late John David and Mary Louise Ashe Horton. Mr. Horton was a veteran of the United States Air Force.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharon L. Conway and husband John of Greenville, NC, and Shelia L. Regan and husband Timothy of Williamsburg, VA; a grandson, Christopher Conway.

Donald Creasy

Donald F. Creasy, 88, of 215 Simpson St. in Elizabeth City, NC died Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at the Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City. Mr. Creasy was a native of Bowling Green, KY, son of the late Floyd Owens and Mrs. Hallie Knite Creasy, and was the husband of Sophia Perry Creasy. He was retired from the US Navy with twenty two years of service, a veteran of World War II; a member of the Riverside United Methodist Church and had also retired from the Coast Guard Base as a civil service employee. He was a member of William Clarence Jackson VFW Post 6060 where he was a member of the Honor Guard.

Along with his wife, Mr. Creasy is survived by a daughter Pat McKinley of Las Vegas, NV, two sons, Donald Larry Creasy of Elizabeth City, NC and Floyd Allen “Bubba” Creasy of Atlanta, GA; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Mr. Creasy was preceded in death by a daughter Sandra Creasy and two sisters Dorothy Fedornock and Margaret Pollittizo.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 26, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Revs. Shawn Blackwelder and Paul Perry officiating. Military Honors will be provided by William Clarence Jackson Post 6060 and burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home immediately following the service and other times at the residence. Hazel Sawyer

Hazel Stone Sawyer, 96, of 900 W. Main Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Monday, March 22, 2010 in Albemarle Hospital. Born in Potomac, MD, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Reitz Stone and the late Lillie Burdette Stone and was the wife of Alfred Sawyer of the residence. She was a member of Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church.

Along with her husband, Mrs. Sawyer is survived by her daughter, Freida S. Belviso of New York City, NY; a brother, Edwin G. Stone of Hillside, MD; six grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Charles Francis Strube; her sisters, Lillian Weisberg and Belle Crolley; and her brother, Robert Stone.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 26, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Rev. Corey Miller officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the lobby of the funeral home and at all other times at the residence. Bessie Meads

Bessie Gaynelle Meads, 81, of 459 Meadstown Road, Elizabeth City, NC died Monday, March 22, 2010 in Albemarle Hospital. Born in Pasquotank County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson Meads, Sr. and the late Bessie Pendelton Meads. Ms. Meads had worked for Pell Paper Box Company for many years and then later at Luther’s Greenhouse. She was a member of Symond’s Creek Tabernacle.

Ms. Meads is survived by her brother, Marshall Meads of Elizabeth City, NC; twenty-nine nieces and nephews; and numerous great, great-great, and great-great-great nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Naomi Williams, Ralph Meads, George Meads, Everett Meads, Gladys Meads Markham, and Thomas J. Meads, Jr.; and four nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Pastor William P. Rembert officiating. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 and at the residence of Garland and Elizabeth Meads, 453 Meadstown Road, Elizabeth City, NC at other times. Atalee Lambert

Atalee Richardson Lambert, 93, of Elizabeth City, NC died at home Sunday, March 21, 2010 following hospitalization for pneumonia. She was born on March 4, 1917 to the late Mattie Parsons Reed and the late Burville Lee Richardson. While living in Elizabeth City, NC, Mrs. Lambert was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and of the Elizabeth City High School Class of 1936. She resided in Portsmouth, VA for twenty years, the last two years being with her daughter.

The widow of Leon Earl Lambert, Mrs. Lambert is survived by her daughter, Sandra Ann Lambert Bennett and husband William Edward, Jr.; grandsons, William Eric Bennett, Christopher York Bennett and wife Mae Lynn Walker, and Todd Hamilton Bennett, all of Portsmouth, VA; great grandchildren, Connor Dane Bennett, Caylee Madison Bennett, Cailin Blair Bennett, Fenn Bennett Walker, and Beren James Bennett Walker; and a large number of loving nieces, nephews, and friends.
