Denise Spruill
Denise Lynn Spruill, 54, of 1742 Soundneck Road, Elizabeth City, NC died Thursday, April 29, 2010 at Albemarle Hospital. Born in Madison, OH, she was the daughter of the late Richard Neal and Sylvia Lynn Butler Howington and was the wife of Charles Spruill of the residence. She was a medical transcriptionist at Albemarle Hospital.
Along with her husband, Mrs. Spruill is survived by her daughter, Ashley Spruill of Elizabeth City, NC; son, Jason Spruill of Elizabeth City, NC; a granddaughter, Jordyn Nichole Meadows; sisters, Nancy Burket and husband David of Maryland, and Rhonda Hypes and husband Robert of Elizabeth City, NC; a brother, John Howington and wife Terry of Hagerstown, WV; step-daughters, Priscilla Etheridge and Kim Spruill; step-son, David Spruill; and all of her friends in the medical records office, especially Kay Smith and Barbara Yorth. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-son, Charles Spruill, Jr.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, May 2, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Terry Howington officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service; immediately following the service in the lobby of the funeral home; and at all other times at the residence. Louise Williams
Louise Sawyer Williams, 94, of 112 Rosedale Drive, Elizabeth City, NC died Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at her residence. Born in Camden County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Maude Upton Sawyer and was the wife of the late William George Williams who died on August 11, 2009 after 71 years of marriage. She was the past Noble Grand of the Elizabeth City Rebekah Lodge #62 and was a member of Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and was in the Joy Club. She was a LPN at Albemarle Hospital until retirement.
Mrs. Williams is survived by her daughter, Anne Williams and husband Kramer of Elizabeth City, NC; her son, W.G. “Bill” Williams, Jr. and wife Deborah of Elizabeth City, NC; five grandchildren, Sherry Grady and husband Matt, Frank Williams, Jr. and wife Tracy, Monica Wilmore and husband John, William Williams, III, and Melinda Gue and husband Kris; and seven great grandchildren, Sarah Grady, Ian Grady, Abigail Williams, Keeley Williams, Cameron Gue, J.B. Williams, and Drew Williams. The family wishes to extend special thanks to their caregivers, Sharon Armstrong, Jackie McMurrin, Ramona Sharber, and Pam Williams, and also to Albemarle Hospice. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Iva Swain; and her brother, Spence Sawyer.

Samuel Overman
Samuel Ray Overman, 52 of 1525 Brumsey Drive, Elizabeth City, NC died Saturday, April 24, 2010 at Chesapeake General Hospital. Mr. Overman, a native of Holland, MI, is survived by his wife Jerilyn (Bunni) Overman He was a retired chief with the U.S.C.G. and was currently employed at DRS at the Elizabeth City U.S.C.G. Base.
Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Brandy Atchley and husband David of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons, Michael Overman and wife Terry of Cleveland, OH and Brian Overman of Detroit, MI; two brothers, Mike Overman and James Overman both of Holland, MI; and four grandchildren, Caleb, Caitlyn, Adrianna, and Elijah.

Mildred Sutton Tice, 72, of Frisco, NC died Monday, April 26, 2010 in a Chesapeake Virginia hospital. Mrs. Tice was born in Somers Point, NJ, the daughter of the late Carl and Edith Verna Mason Sutton. She worked as a cashier for Food Lion and loved playing Bingo. James Callison
James Bo Callison, 62, of 2102 Forest Circle, Elizabeth City, died Thursday, April 22, 2010 at his residence. Born in Middlesboro, Kentucky, he was the son of James Robinson Callison and Jean Cook Callison and was the husband of Rebecca Buehler Callison for twenty-seven years. Mr. Callison retired from the Currituck County School System in 2007 after serving most recently as Director of Career and Technical Education. Mr. Callison graduated from Fairview High School, Dayton, Ohio in 1965. He received his undergraduate degree from Wake Forest University and his Masters Degree and Principal’s Certificate from East Carolina University. He began his teaching career at Hollansburg Middle School in New Madison, Ohio from 1973-1975 and then moved to Franklin Monroe High School in Pitsburg, Ohio from 1975-1982. He moved to Elizabeth City in 1982 and taught at Northeastern High School for a year before moving to the Currituck County School System.
Mr. Callison was an avid fisherman and an active member of the Albemarle Bassmasters where he served as Secretary/Treasurer for many years. Through this organization he made lifelong friends, many of whom he considered brothers.
Along with his parents and his wife, Mr. Callison is survived by daughters June Callison Hayes of Arcanum, Ohio, and Stacie Renee Callison and son James Roman Callison of Elizabeth City. He has one sister, Ann Callison Taylor and husband, Gary, of Dunn, NC and grandchildren Adam Hayes and Bryan Hayes of Arcanum, Ohio. He is also survived by several uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins as well.
A funeral service and celebration of life will be held at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel (405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909) on Monday at 10:00 a.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday and at other times at the residence. Steven Anderson
Steven Robert Anderson, 56, of Shawboro, NC died Thursday, April 22, 2010 in Chesapeake General Hospital. Born in Pasquotank County, NC, he was the son of the late Will Stevens Anderson and Edna Outlaw Anderson of Shawboro, NC. He had worked as a mechanic at Atlantic Yacht Basin in Great Bridge, VA and was a member of Providence Baptist Church.
Along with his mother, Mr. Anderson is survived by a daughter, Robin Johnson and husband James of Pittsboro, NC; a sister, Linda Davenport and husband Herbert of Elizabeth City, NC; two grandchildren, Cooper Johnson and Wyatt Johnson; his best friend, Tanya Spear; three nieces and one nephew.

Joe was married to his best friend and high school sweetheart, Carolynn Marie Haggard, for 53 years. They were inseparable until her death in September 2009. Along the way, they raised 7 children and shared their love of travel, people, music and adventure. With unwavering commitment, they laughed through the good times and leaned on each other through more challenging days, setting a fine example of genuine love. To your children, you provided us with the perfect combination of leadership, love, encouragement and acceptance. You respected our independence and unique perspectives and encouraged us to pursue our own dreams. Dad, we thank you for your wisdom and for sharing your life with us. Please know that we appreciate your sacrifices and the life lessons you shared over the years. We are now, and will always be, proud to call you our dad.

Murray Elton Baccus, Sr., 67 of 359 Hurdle Town Road, Hertford, NC, died Thursday, April 22, 2010 at his residence. A native of Perquimans County, he was the son of Velma Evans Baccus of Hertford, NC and the late Murray Odell Baccus and the husband of Marilyn Combs Baccus of the home. He was a retired Licensed General Contractor, a member of Woodville Pentecostal Holiness Church, Parksville Ruritan Club and Coastal Carolina Riders.
Besides his wife and mother he is survived by a daughter, Tammy Ponton and husband William of New Bern, NC; two sons, Murray Elton Baccus, II and wife Donna of Hertford, NC and Jarrod Scott Baccus and wife Jennifer of Raleigh, NC; a sister, Brenda Riddick of Belvidere, NC; and seven grandchildren, Collin Ponton, Hayley Ponton, Anna Grace Ponton, Nicholas Burchfield, Emma DeMent, Weldon DeMent, and Mary Evans Baccus.

W.S. Chaffin Jr.
W.S. “Watt” Chaffin, Jr, 95, of 106 Farm Drive, Elizabeth City, NC went to be with the Lord Thursday, April 22, 2010 at Carolina House of Elizabeth City. Born in South Mills, NC, he was the son of the late W.S. “Sanford” Chaffin, Sr. and Mary Taylor Chaffin and was the husband of the late Ruby Story Chaffin. Mr. Chaffin had been a salesman of Ford automobiles and was a former member of the Masonic Lodge in South Mills. In his younger years, he was very athletic and enjoyed playing baseball, basketball and tennis. He also was an avid weightlifter and enjoyed playing pool.
Mr. Chaffin is survived by his daughter, Alice Chaffin Williams of Greenville, NC; grandsons, Mike Williams and wife Kim of Greenville, NC and Roger Williams and wife Stephanie of Louisville, KY; great granddaughters, Brittany Williams and Avery Georgia Williams; a brother, Bobby Chaffin of Marietta, GA; his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Chaffin of Shiloh, NC; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Washington Sanford Chaffin, III and his brother, Judge John T. Chaffin.
