Doris Ann Modlin Berry, 70, died Monday, May 31, 2010 in Elizabeth City, NC. Born in Manteo, she was the daughter of the late William Asa Modlin and the late Matilda Ann Midgett Gray and was the widow of Thomas Luther Berry.

Mrs. Berry is survived by two daughters, Brenda Gail Berry McMurran of Manteo and Doris Jean Berry of Kill Devil Hills; three sons, Richard Stanley Daniels of Wilmington, NC, Thomas Jabin Berry of Maury, NC and Ronald Wade Berry of Manteo; two sisters, Rebecca Carter of Vanceboro, NC and Kathryn Beasley of Colington; nine grandchildren and five nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 4, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Manteo Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at Twiford Funeral Homes’ Colony Chapel, Manteo on Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM and at other times at the residence of Ronnie and Christal Berry, 111 Skyco Road, Manteo.

Mark Davenport, Jr

Mark Majett “Sambo” Davenport, Jr, 64, of 106 S. McMorrine Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Monday, May 31, 2010 at the Brian Center of Hertford, NC. Born in Pasquotank County, NC, he was the son of the late Mark Majett Davenport, Sr. and the late Bertie Price Davenport. He worked as a roofer for Gordon Sheet Metal and was a veteran of the United States Navy.

Mr. Davenport is survived by his son, David Davenport of Elizabeth City, NC; sisters, Barbara Raines of Elizabeth City, NC, and Rita Davenport Doxey of Currituck, NC; and two grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Carrol Jiminez; and brothers, Darrell Davenport and James Robert Davenport.

A graveside memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 3, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at New Hollywood Cemetery with military honors being rendered by the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post 6060. Lydia Brickhouse

Lydia Bell Baker Eckert Brickhouse, 88, of 133 Spindrift Trail, Elizabeth City, NC died Monday, May 31 at Guardian Care of Elizabeth City. Born in Norfolk, VA, she was the daughter of the late Charles Q. Baker and the late Maybelle Hudson Baker and was the wife of the late Leo Andrew Eckert and the late Sammy G. Brickhouse. She was a homemaker and a member of Fountain of Life Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Mrs. Brickhouse is survived by her daughter, Hope Marie Brickhouse of Elizabeth City, NC; her son, Charles Vernon Eckert, Sr. and wife Cindy of Elizabeth City, NC; sisters, Betty Higgins of Elizabeth City, NC, Helen Gaskins of Elizabeth City, NC, and Barbara Jean Wadler of Oklahoma City, OK; a brother, Linwood “Shorty” Baker and wife Mary of Lebanon, PA; grandchildren, Charles Eckert, Jr. and wife Kelly, Leo Eckert and wife Margie, Kathy Eckert and fiancé Bill, and Corey; great grandchildren, Samantha, Charles Anthony, Matthew, Michael, Charlie, Justin, Tyrell, and Brittany; and one great-great grandchild, Aidyn.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 3, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Fountain of Life Pentecostal Holiness Church with Pastor Preston Pitchford officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel; immediately following the service at the church; and at all other times at the residence. Herbert Hawkins

Major Herbert H. Hawkins (FBI Ret.) 72, on Sunday, May 30, 2010 at his residence, with his family by his side, after a long battle with cancer. Herb was born on August 4, 1937, in New York City, NY to the late Lt. Col. Herbert H. Hawkins, Sr. (Ret.) and Helen Bofferding. He attended NYC and California schools, graduating from Camp Lejeune High School and received his BA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1959. He attained his Master’s Degree from Wichita State University in 1976. Upon graduation from UNC, he enter the U.S. Marine Corp. as a second Lieutenant and served throughout the Caribbean, Mediterranean, and Southeast Asia. Herb was highly decorated, receiving numerous personal decorations, including a Purple Heart with a gold star while in serving in Vietnam as a Rifle Company Commander.

He entered on duty with the Federal Bureau of Investigation on August 10, 1969 as a Special Agent. He served in Houston, Kansas City, FBI Headquarters (Washington D.C.), San Antonio (Austin RA), and Las Vegas (Assistant Agent in Charge). He was assigned to the Inspection Staff and later assigned to Omaha as Special Agent in Charge (SAC) and retired in Phoenix (SAC) in August of 1989.

Herb was a member of the Lions Club and Rotary Club International. He served as a board member of the Little League in 1976 in Virginia and of the Marine’s Memorial Club (San Francisco) from 1968 – 1969.

Following his FBI retirement, Herb was an avid golfer living in Scottsdale, AZ, where he worked as a Realtor specializing in commerical real estate investments with Hawkins Group Realty. When he moved to Southern Shores, he continued his love for golf with his dear friends at Duck Woods Country Club.

Mr. Hawkins is survived by his wife, Wendy Soujanen Hawkins; three daughters, Holly Jackson (Cole), Heather Hawthorne (Brian), and Heidi Sublette (Scott); three sons, Herbert Hawkins (Rachel), Mike Hawkins (Allie), and Jeffery Hawkins; two step-daughters, Elizabeth Reynolds and Heidi Daigle, 6 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, and his sister, Helen Cathcart. Herb was an honorable, kind, and giving man.

A Memorial Service will be held, in his honor, at 4:00 pm on Friday, June 18, 2010 at All Saints Episcopal Church, 40 Pintail Drive, Southern Shores, NC 27949 with Father Tom Wilson officiating. Interment of Cremains, with full honors, will occur at Arlington National Cemetery on Thursday, September 2, 2010 at 1:00 pm.

William Jemison

William Harrison Jemison, 78, CEO of Heyco Inc., passed away at his residence on Sunday, May 30, 2010. Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Leroy Jemison and the late Leonie Perrot Jemison. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his two brothers, Roy and Lee Jemison, and one grandson, Cord Jemison.

Mr. Jemison is survived by his wife, Barbara Pierro Jemison, of the residence. Also surviving are three sons, William Jemison of Boulder, CO., Michael Jemison of Wyomissing, PA, Steven Jemison of Denver, CO., one daughter, Susan Jemison of Wyomissing, PA, one sister Helen Springob of Leonia, NJ, and ten grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, June 7, 2010 at Ocracoke United Methodist Church in Ocracoke. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Ocracoke Volunteer Fire Department, P O Box 332, Ocracoke, NC 27960. Mr. Jemison admired and appreciated the fire fighters for all of their hard work and commitment to the community at times of need.

Florence Midgette

Florence M. Midgette, 85, of Norfolk, VA passed away May 30th, 2010. Mrs. Midgette was born in Manhattan, New York City, New York. She was predeceased by her parents, Bert and Grace Jones; brother, Edward Jones and sister, Edith Rizzo.

Mrs. Midgette was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Norfolk, VA and Past President of the Golden Unit Wives Club, whose members consist of wives of members of the Legion of Honor Unit of Khedive Shrine Center. She was a career credit union employee, having retired from Tidewater Telephone Employee Credit Union and worked with Coast Guard Credit Union in Norfolk, VA, Miami, FL and Washington, D.C.

She was married to and survived by her husband Milton for 67 years; two daughters, Juanita and husband Clint Hepler and Susan and husband Michael Leccese; grandchildren, John and wife Heather Hepler, Bill and wife Shannon Hepler, Lianne and husband Timm McShanne, and Adrienne Leccese; and two great-grandchildren, Ryan and Keira Hepler. She is also survived byone brother, Ralph Jones of San Diego, CA.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday June 4, 2010 followed by a funeralal service at 8:00 p.m. at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, Twiford Chapel, 929 South Battlefield Blvd, Chesapeake, VA. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 5, 2010 in Manteo Cemetery, Manteo, NC. In lieu of flowers the family request donations to Khedive Shrine Center, 645 Woodlake Drive, Chesapeake, VA 23320 for Children’s Hospitals and /or Children’s Transportation Fund.

George Forbes, II

George Harris Forbes, II, 69, of 175 Garrington Island Road, Shawboro, NC died Saturday, May 29, 2010 in Albemarle Hospital. Born in Camden County, NC he was the son of the late George H. and Mary Leary Forbes and was the husband of the late Anita Belton Forbes. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Marine Corps and the United States Army and later worked as a barge captain for the Merchant Marine. He was a member of the American Legion Hut, Coinjock Post 288.

Mr. Forbes is survived by his daughter, Mary Forbes of Shawboro, NC; sons, George H. Forbes, III and wife Laura of Okinawa, Japan and Paul Eisenhardt of Rocky Mount, NC; a sister, Betty Ann Forbes Seymour of Virginia Beach, VA; and fifteen grandchildren. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Lizzie Leary and Stephen and Polly Forbes; and by his brother, Garland Forbes.

Isabel “Bel” Pitcher

Isabel “Bel” Pitcher, 80, of Nags Head, NC died suddenly Saturday, May 29, 2010 at Virginia Beach General Hospital. Mrs. Pitcher had been living at Spring Arbor of the Outer Banks. Born and raised in Yonkers, NY, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Vail and the wife of the late Robert D. Pitcher. She and her husband built a vacation home on the Outer Banks in 1972 and retired to the area permanently in 1982. “Bel” worked for IBM and continued as a secretary at several locations. “Bel” was previously a member and /or volunteer of several organizations, including the Dare County SPCA, Community Watch for the Town of Nags Head, The Red Hats, Pea Island Wildlife Refuge, The Senior Fellowship, North Carolina Tarheel Senior Women’s Legislation. She was very active in her community and was an avid traveler, having explored all the continents of the world.
At the age of 63, she was one of the oldest graduates of College of the Albemarle in 1987, with a degree in General Education and a Summa Cum Laude distinction.

She is survived by two daughters, Nancy L. Brightbill and husband Keith, of Kill Devil Hills and Ellen P. Hooker and husband Carl, of Manteo; and 4 grandchildren, Ashley Brightbill, Bryan Brightbill, Cody Hooker and Steven Hooker.

The memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, June 3rd at Grace Lutheran Church, 1:00 p.m. in Nags Head, NC with a reception immediately following at The Old Nags Head Cove Clubhouse. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Dare County SPCA. P.O. Box 1000, Manteo, NC 27954.

James Manuel

James Anthony Manuel, 47, of Rileyville, VA, died Saturday, May 29, 2010 in Kill Devil Hills, NC. Mr. Manuel was born in Arlington, VA and was self employed as an electrician. He was the son of Barbara Cave Manuel and the late James Hudson Manuel and is survived by his wife Penny Foster Manuel.

Besides his wife and mother, surviving are three sons, Nathan James Manuel, Nolan Robert Manuel and Cory Alan Manuel.

Annette Sawyer

Annette Sawyer, 67, beloved wife and mother, went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 24, 2010. She was born on July 5, 1942 in Pasquotank County, NC to Henry and Bessie Ann Meads. Mrs. Sawyer was a homemaker, daycare provider, and coordinated numerous weddings, showers, and other special events. She loved to cook for her family. She was a member of the Ridgecrest Worship Center (formerly South Rocky Mount Church of God) in Rocky Mount, NC, where she served as past Director of the Young at Heart Senior Adults Group, nursery worker, and on various hospitality committees. She was also the Charter President of the Downeast Luncheon Ruritan Club in Rocky Mount.

Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Joe Sawyer; her son Darrin Sawyer (Debby) of Cary, NC; daughter JoAnn Croix (Gary) of Stockbridge, GA; sisters Latitcia “Tish” Linbuckler (Lin) of Hertford, NC, Judy Overman (George) and Alice Redding of Elizabeth City, NC and Amy Chappell (Grant) of Raleigh, NC. She was predeceased by her sister, Linda Griffin and brother, Tommy Meads. She was also a special Nana to Katarina and Tyler Medlin of Rocky Mount.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 27, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm at the funeral home; immediately following the service Thursday in the lobby of the funeral home; and at all other times at the home of Alice Redding, 914 Riverside Avenue, Elizabeth City, NC. A special celebration service will be held on Friday, May 28, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at Ridgecrest Worship Center, 1120 West Mount Drive, Rocky Mount, NC.
