Wilmer Pippin

Wilmer P. Pippin, 78, of 108 Poplar Circle, Moyock, NC, died Wednesday, June 30, 2010 at Sentara Barco Nursing Home. Mrs. Pippin, a native of Suffolk, VA was the daughter of the late Robert Albert and Mrs. Annie Maude Gay Parkerson and was the widow of David Christopher Pippin. She was a member of Providence Baptist Church.

Mrs. Pippin is survived by two daughters, Wilma Barre of Chesapeake, VA and Annie Martin of Salem, OR; a son, William Albert Pippin of Moyock, NC; twelve grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, David C. Pippin, Jr.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, July 5, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Central Hill Cemetery in Isle of Wright County, VA by Rev. Jim Clarke. The family will receive friends at the Cemetery immediately following the service. Twiford Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC is assisting the family.

Frank Miller Jr.,

Frank Milton “Nobby” Miller Jr., of Wanchese, NC died on Wednesday, June 30, 2010 in a Chesapeake hospital. Mr. Miller was born in Southold, Long Island, New York and was employed with Wanchese Fish Company. He was a member of Wanchese Assembly of God and a charter member of the Outer Banks Worship Center (Ark International Church) in Nags Head. Mr. Miller was a former trawl boat captain of the “Companion” and was a “Jack Of All Trades”. He served his country honorably as a paratrooper with the U.S. Army.
He was the son of the late Frank Milton Miller, Sr. and the late Marian Crum Miller and the husband of Faith Daniels Miller of the home.
Mr. Miller is also survived by his two daughters, Mindy Lynnette Miller of Wanchese and Alexia Maude Miller of Morganton, NC; one son, Malcolm Kyle Miller of Wanchese; two sisters, Peggy Miller Goldsmith of Richmond, VA and Mally McNulty of Laurel, NY. He was predeceased by his sisters, Muriel Person and Dorothy Ramsey and a brother, Bud Miller.
A celebration of life will be in Wanchese Assembly of God, Saturday July 3, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. by Rev. Mark Hinson. Burial will be in Tillett Cemetery. Friends may join the family at Twiford Funeral Home Friday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Barbara Helmke

Barbara T. Helmke, 69, of Mallard Court, Grandy died June 29, 2010 at Albemarle Hospital. Born in Norfolk, VA, she was the daughter of the late John and Ella Moore Tillette and was a retired Registered Nurse.

Mrs. Helmke is survived by her husband, Richard G. Helmke of the home; a son, David Helmke and wife, Debra of Buchanan, VA; a daughter, Michelle Moore and husband, Harvey of Virginia Beach, VA; a grandson, Chris Cheffer of Virginia Beach, VA; and two sisters, Doris Parker of Florida and Theresa Kilbride of Minnesota.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

James Kirkland

James Kirkland

James Beecher Kirkland, 88, of 813 Bermuda Bay Boulevard, Kill Devil Hills, NC, died Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at Sentara Barco Nursing Home. Mr. Kirkland, a native of Monroe County, TN, was the son of the late Charlie Monroe Kirkland and Clara Veal Kirkland the husband of Betty Lee Davis Kirkland. He was a retired Command Sergeant Major from the U. S. Army and a Veteran of WWII.

He is survived by a son, Gerald Kirkland of Racine, WI; eight grand-children; and nine great grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by a son, James Lee Kirkland.

A memorial service will be Friday, July 2, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with military honors rendered by the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post #6060. Burial will be in the Veteran’s Section of New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the lobby of the funeral home. Twiford Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of arrangements.

Betty Midgett

Betty Harrell Midgett, 67, of 1099 Horseshoe Road, Elizabeth City, NC died Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at her residence. Mrs. Midgett, a native of Camden County, was the daughter of the late David Fenton Harrell and Florence Evelyn Smith Harrell and the widow of Myron Vance Midgett, Jr. She was a homemaker and a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a daughter Donna Newcomb and husband Chuck of Elizabeth City, NC; two sisters, Carolyn A. Chesson and Eleanor “Teenie” Staples, both of Camden, NC; two brothers, Douglas Harrell of Camden, NC, and Leonard Harrell of Elizabeth City, NC; and a grandson, Brandon D. Jones. She was pre-deceased by a daughter Darlene Midgett and a son Myron Vance Midgett, III.

Funeral services will be Friday, July 2, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Glenn Greenway officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 PM Thursday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence. Twiford Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of arrangements.
