Eloise Rogers
Eloise N. Rogers, 83, of Kitty Hawk, N.C., slipped her earthly bounds on a stormy Thursday evening, July 29, 2010, after a brief illness.
In her final days and hours, Mama Bear, as she was affectionately known by her three sons, was surrounded by family, including a beloved niece, Margaret P. Davison of Blacksburg, Va., who sought to comfort Rogers not only with their presence, but also with the melodies of 1940s era jazz music.
Rogers was preceded in her death by her nine siblings, husbands Hunter C. Bourne Jr. and William M. Rogers, and her granddaughter Ashley Leigh Bourne.
She is survived by numerous loving family members, including her youngest son Gregory Bourne, his wife Suzanne L. Bourne and their daughter Erin M. Bourne of Colington, N.C., and his stepsons, Julian and Gabriel A. Lockey; middle son Douglas Bourne and his wife Bliss H. Bourne of Fredericksburg, Va.; and eldest son Hunter C. Bourne III of Powells Point, N.C., and his daughter Victoria A. Bourne and her significant other, James E. “E.J.” Toudt of Norfolk, Va.
Left also to treasure her memory are her many lifelong compatriots from the days of her Blacksburg youth.
Rogers was born Eloise Nolen, the youngest of 10 siblings, in Montgomery County, Va., on Aug. 20, 1926. She graduated from high school in Blacksburg, Va., and married Hunter Carson “Calci” Bourne Jr. in 1945.
In 1948, after a brief period in Chicago and Blacksburg, the young couple moved to Washington, D.C., where Rogers (ne Bourne) worked for the Federal Communications Commission, and her husband worked for the Patent Office.
The couple relocated to the Mount Vernon area of Alexandria, Va., in 1951, where she raised three boys and worked in her husband’s legal practice.
In 1971, the family relocated to Greymont, the Bourne family farm, in Ashland, Va. Her husband, Calci, died in 1972. She remained at Greymont until 2006, when she moved into her Martin’s Point home in Kitty Hawk.
The Outer Banks had been a favored family vacation spot since the mid-1950s, and her Port O Call cottages were often visited by family and friends over the years.
She married William M. “Bill” Rogers in 1982, and they purchased a condominium in Diamond Shoals shortly afterward. She and Bill, who died in 2003, also developed properties at Lake Anna and in Louisa County, Va., through Spots-Lou Inc. She acted as vice president of the corporation and then ultimately as president.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, at All Saints Episcopal Church, 40 Pintail Trail, Southern Shores, N.C. The Rev. Thomas Wilson, Rector, will officiate. A private gathering of friends and family follows the service at Rogers’ Martin’s Point home. Twiford Funeral Home in Manteo, N.C., is handling arrangements.
