Lisa Riedel
Lisa Ann Craft Riedel, age 42, of 116 Mockingbird Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, September 30, 2010, at Albemarle Hospital. Ms. Riedel was born in Mt. Kisco, NY, the daughter of Alfred and Elizabeth Riedel.
Besides her parents, Ms. Riedel is survived by one daughter, Cassandra Craft and husband, Charles; two sons, Thomas Craft and Joshua Craft; four brothers, Brian Riedel and wife, Debra, Craig Riedel and wife, Jennie, Curt Riedel, and Daniel Riedel; two grandchildren; her children’s father, Thomas Craft, Sr.; their grandmother, Connie MacIntire; and aunt, Donna Craft.
A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, October 6, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC. The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 5, 2010, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Twiford Funeral Homes is serving the Riedel family.

Marie Raper
Marie Jones Raper, 88, of 260 Keeter Barn Road, South Mills, NC died Thursday, September 30, 2010 at Sentara Leigh Memorial Hospital in VA. Born in Camden County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Elizabeth Sawyer Jones, and the widow of Clarence Foster Raper. She was a member of Geneva Baptist Church and attended Sharon United Methodist Church. Mrs. Raper is survived by a daughter, Phyllis Cartwright and husband Percy of Elizabeth City, NC; three sons, Ronnie Raper and wife Melanie of South Mills, NC, Donnie Raper and wife Sue of Elizabeth City, NC, and Lonnie Raper and wife Kathy of Hertford, NC; two sisters, Nell Cartwright of Camden, NC and Lydia Weeks of Elizabeth City, NC; four grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, October 3, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Rev. Boyce Porter officiating. Private burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the lobby of the funeral home and other times at the residence. John McClung
John Truett McClung, Sr., 84, of 300 Japonica Drive, Camden, NC died Thursday, September 30, 2010 at the Albemarle Hospital. He was a native of Duplin County, the son of the late James Price McClung and Myrtle Southerland McClung, and the husband of Hilda Clark McClung of the residence. He was a retired Charter Life Underwriter for Prudential Life Insurance Company, a US Army Veteran of WWII, and a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, Gideons International, and Shiloh Ruritan.
Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, John McClung, Jr., of Virginia Beach, VA and Charles Mitchell McClung of Camden, NC; and a sister, Myrtle Evelyn Nelson of Newport News, VA.
Funeral services will be Sunday, October 3, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. David Combs and Mr. Frankie Gordon officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview Baptist Church Cemetery in Pinetops, NC. The family will receive friends at the residence. Lynette Saunders
Mildred Lynette Midgett Saunders, 45, passed away, unexpectedly, in Manns Harbor on Wednesday evening, September 29, 2010. She is preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd Midgett and Mary Agnes Haywood Midgett. Lynette is survived by her husband, Timothy S. Saunders, of the residence.
In addition to her husband, Lynette is survived by her daughters, Macy, Leann, and Breann, of Manns Harbor, her sister Lori Ann Midgett Gibbs and husband Calvin, and her brother, Timmy Midgett and wife Deanie, all of Manns Harbor.
A Funeral will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church in Manns Harbor, with interment in the Mount Carmel Church Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, October 1, 2010 from 7:00 – 8:00 pm at Twiford Funeral Home, Manteo, NC.

Eva Ann Winfree Culp, 77, of 104 Summerfield Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at Winslow Memorial Home. Mrs. Culp, a native of Franklin County, was the daughter of the late Vassie T. Winfree and Ora Lee Shaeron Winfree and the wife of Avis Richard Culp of the residence. She was a homemaker and a member of The First United Methodist Church. Besides her husband she is survived by a daughter, Barbara Ann Bishop and husband Jeff of Orlando, FL; three sons, Richard W. Culp and wife Patricia of Chesapeake, VA, Michael D. Culp and wife Susan of Louisa, VA, and Daniel B. Culp and wife Carolyn of Virginia Beach, VA; a sister, Frances L. Manchester and husband Ray of Tomball, TX; eight grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. Robert Striano
Scott Robert Striano, 42, passed away Saturday, Sept. 25th, 2010 in Kitty Hawk, NC. Originally from Long Island, New York, Robert resided in Greensboro, NC. Robert was the proud father of 7 and grandfather of four. He will be missed by his loving family and a host of loyal, good friends. Robert is predeceased by his father, Robert Striano and his brother, Steven Striano.
Mr. Striano is survived by his mother, Elizabeth Striano, brother, Ronald Striano, sisters, Barbara and Janet Striano, daughters, Christine, Nicole, Michelle Striano, Haley Cable, Suzanne, Stephanie and Amy Cook, many nieces and nephews, and his four legged friend, Ben.
A Memorial Service celebrating Robert’s Life will be held at the Alumni House at UNCG in Greensboro, NC at 2:30 pm, Monday, October 4, 2010. KITTY HAWK, NC
Lucille Sawyer Stokes, 84, of Kitty Hawk and a former resident of Elizabeth City, died Monday, September 27, 2010, in Nags Head. Mrs. Stokes was born in Elizabeth City and moved to Kitty Hawk where she and her husband owned and operated the Saltaire Court. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Elizabeth City and a former member of the Elizabeth City Lions Club.
She was the daughter of the late Leven Samuel and Elizabeth Riggs Sawyer and the wife of the late Joseph Jackson “Joe” Stokes.
Surviving are two daughters, Susann Stokes Wright of Kitty Hawk and Deborah Stokes Clinkscales and husband Howard of Kill Devil Hills; one son, Sam Stokes of Kill Devil Hills and wife Mary and seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Stokes was predeceased by her son in law, Jerry Wright, Jr.
A celebration of life will be at the graveside in West Lawn Cemetery Main Street Extended in Elizabeth City, Friday, October 1, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. by Rev. F. Joe Griffith

Hilda Gilden
Hilda Jones Gilden, 85, of 6676 Caratoke Highway, Grandy, NC died Sunday, September 26, 2010 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Born in Pasquotank County, NC; she was the daughter of the late Joseph Elliott and Mrs. Idabelle Roughton Jones; and the widow of Lloyd Clinton Gilden. She enjoyed fishing, crabbing and worked as a nurse for a short time. Mrs. Gilden is survived by a close friend, Dottie Jordan of Aydlett, NC. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph William Jones. Flora Doris Nancy Phillips, 75, of Wanchese, NC died Sunday, September 26, 2010 in Nags Head. Born in Washington D.C, she was the daughter of the late Aubrey and Geraldine Phillips. She was a former finance officer for Fairfax County Public Schools. She was a member of The Ark International Church and attended American University.
Mrs. Phillips is survived by ;one daughter, Shelli Beth Gates of Nags Head; one son, Mathew David Miller of Reston, VA; one brother, Aubrey Anthony Phillips and his partner Duane McKinley both of Vienna, VA. She leaves behind many friends that she called ‘family’ and her beloved cat Princess. She loved the ocean and walking the beach. She had an ear for irony and found humor in everything. She was an artist and she loved animals. She had an unshakeable faith. In her last days she asked that we include a thank you to Dare County Social Services for their help over the years and especially Diane Bryant.
A Celebration of her life will be held at The Ark International Church, Nags Head at 1:00pm on Friday October 1 with the Rev. Jim Lewis officiating. Flowers can be sent to the church. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Dare County Social Services, Dare County Home Health and Hospice or the Seven Sisters Foundation.

John Allan Brown, 71, of 107 Birdie Lane, Elizabeth City, NC died Saturday, September 25, 2010 at Albemarle Hospital. Born in Martins Ferry, Ohio he was the son of the late John Lewis and Mrs. Dorothy Vargo Brown. Mr. Brown was a retired U.S. Navy veteran as a Chief Petty Officer. Mr. Brown is survived by a daughter, Kimberly Hunter of Tazewell, TN; two sons, Jeffrey Brown of Elizabeth City, NC and John Brown of Arcata, CA; a sister, Dorothy Hartong of Ohio; a brother, Jimmy “JB” Brown; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Brown. Mr. Brown is being sent from Twiford Funeral Home in Elizabeth City, NC to the Greathouse Funeral Home, Old Rt. # 60 West in Salem, West Virginia for a graveside funeral service on Wednesday September 29, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the Knights of Pithians Cemetery with military honors.
