Ronald Shackelford

Ronald Dale “Shack” Shackelford, 60, of 1164 Northside Road, Elizabeth City, NC died Friday, October 29, 2010 at Albemarle Hospital.  Born in Peroia, IL, he was the son of the late Max and Dorothy Grider Shackelford and was the husband of Patricia Prater Shackelford of the residence.  Mr. Shackelford was a veteran, having served in the United States Navy.  He was a diesel mechanic and was a member of the Arts of the Albemarle.

Along with his wife, Mr. Shackelford is survived by his sons, Coy Shackelford of Elizabeth City, NC and Zack Shackelford of Virginia Beach, VA; a daughter, Carman Lynmark of Kentucky; granddaughter, Samantha Slater of Kentucky; a sister and a brother of Illinois.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Tom Shackelford.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Rev. F. Norman Pendleton

Norman L. Pendleton, Sr. of Elizabeth City, NC died Thursday, October 28, 2010 at his home.  He was born September 16, 1920 in Weeksville, NC to the late Lula Price Pendleton and Charles Lynn Pendleton.  Norman served in both WWII and the Korean Campaign. He retired after forty-two years service from the Employment Security Commission in 1985 and was the local manager for most of his career.  Norman was active in the Lions Club and City Road Methodist Church and enjoyed hunting and fishing while his health permitted. He greeted everyone with a smile and a cheerful saying.  He is survived by his wife Myra of 64 years; his children, N. Lynn Pendleton, Jr. and wife Deborah, Donna P. Black, Ron Pendleton and wife Bobbi, Joyce Edwards and husband Charles, and Karen Pendleton; a brother, Ruben Pendleton and wife Anna; grandchildren, Jennifer M. Pendleton, Lauren and Chuck Edwards, and Ron Pendleton, Jr.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Jerry Pendleton and his sister Irene Belangia.  A funeral service will be held on Monday, November 1, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Rev. Stephanie Ann Ward Jones, 36, of 650 Okisko Road, Elizabeth City, NC died Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at Albemarle Hospital.  Born in Edenton, NC, she was the daughter of Teresa Anita Ward of Elizabeth City, NC and the late Thomas Ray Ward and was the wife of William Chad Jones of the residence. 

Along with her husband and mother, Stephanie is survived by her son, Ethan Chad Jones; grandmother, Elmira Ward; parents-in-law, Robert and Barbara Jones; sister-in-law, Lisa Jones; brother-in-law, Glen Jones; aunts, Yvonne Ward Bradley, Michelle Jackson and husband Larry, and Janice Pratt and husband Joe; uncles, Michael Ward, Stephen Ward, David Ward, and Scott Ward; niece, Shelby Jones; nephew, Carson Jones; and her cousin, Lilley Jackson.

Haley Mitchell

Haley Christiana Mitchell, 13, of 2048 Rivershore Road, Elizabeth City, NC, joined the angels on Tuesday evening, October 26, 2010 at Children’s Hospital of the King Daughters in Norfolk, VA.  Born in Elizabeth City, NC, she was the daughter of Jeff Mitchell and Valerie Sword Mitchell of the residence.  Besides her parents, she is survived by a sister, Kelsie Mitchell; maternal grandmother, Sandy Honaker and husband, Lanny of Jonesborough, TN; and paternal grandfather, Bill Mitchell of Gatesville, NC; uncle Greg Mitchell and wife Lisa of Durham, NC; aunt Belinda Vanderlip and husband Jason of Phoenix, AZ; cousins Justin and Sarah Mitchell and Dylan Vanderlip. She was preceded in death by a maternal grandfather, H.T. Sword and paternal grandmother, Frances Mitchell.  Haley made a lasting impression on everyone with whom she came in contact, especially the many nurses, teachers, therapists, and special friends who surrounded her with love. While her physical challenges were overwhelming, her positive attitude and spirit more than compensated for them.  She touched many lives in her short tenure with her unmistakeable lessons of patience, tolerance and happiness under adverse circumstances, leaving lasting impressions on the children of the community.  Haley has been the inspiration for a major fundraising effort over the last 12 years to raise money for research and ultimately a cure for Spinal Muscular Atrophy.  The Haley Mitchell Ski-a-thon has contributed almost $400,000 in her honor since 1998 to Families of SMA, the lead organization that funds research and family support services.  A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 30, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at New Community Church with Rev. Gene Asbill and Rev. Loyce Jean Brown, 77, of 901 Halstead Blvd., Elizabeth City, NC, passed away on Tuesday, October 26, 2010.  Born in Wilson County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Kid Bailey and the late Marie Scott Bailey and widow of the late Carlton Lee Brown.  She was a legal secretary and a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.  Ms. Brown is survived by two sons, Carlton L. Frances Eugenia Miller Garrett, 88 of 616 South Mills Road, Moyock, NC died Sunday, October 24, 2010 at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center.  Mrs. Garrett, a native of Freeport, FL, was the daughter of the late Eugene Henry Miller, Jr., and Margaret Doyle Miller Carlton and the widow of Vernon Paul Garrett, Sr.  She was a homemaker, owner of Moyock Poultry Farm, a member of Moyock Baptist Church, and a graduate of Maury High School.  She is survived by a daughter, Janet G. Garrett and husband Jerry; two sons, Vernon Paul Garrett, Jr., and Sidney Patrick Garrett and wife Sandra of Moyock, NC all of Moyock, NC; six grandchildren, Vernon Paul Garrett, III and wife Michelle, Charlene Jackson Eason and husband Craig, Alan L. Forehand and wife Darlene, Jason S. Garrett, Greta D. Garrett, and Ryan P. Garrett; and seven great grandchildren, Cody Eason, Emilee Eason, Christopher Eason, Austin Garrett, Nolan Garrett, Hunter Forehand, and Jeffrey Berry.  She was predeceased by a sister, Elenore Miller.  Funeral services will be Thursday, October 28, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Gerald Williams

Gerald Davis Williams, 78, of Avon died Saturday, October 23, 2010 in Avon. Born in Avon, he was the son of the late Charles T. Williams, II and the late Iantha O’Neal Williams. He was a retired Chief Yeoman with the U.S. Coast Guard and was a member of St. Johns United Methodist Church.

Mr. Williams is survived by four sisters, Velma Barnett, Retta Quidley, Vera Meekins, and Gloria O’Neal all of Avon; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Beatrice Hooper and a brother, Charles T. Williams, III.

A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, October 28, 2010 at 11:00 AM at St. Johns United Methodist Church by the Rev. Roger Dill. Burial will be in the family cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at the church on Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

Iris Ann Bunch Albert Henderson, 81, of 731 Frost Street SW, Hartselle, AL, died at a hospital in Alabama on Saturday, October 23, 2010.  Born June 20, 1929 in Pasquotank County, Elizabeth City, NC, she was the daughter of the late William Henderson Bunch and Susie Trueblood Bunch, the widower of her first husband Frank Joseph Albert, and the former wife of her second husband James Herbert Henderson.  She was retired from the  school system as a Librarian and Teacher for over twenty years.  She was a graduate of Elizabeth City State University and East Carolina University.  Mrs. Henderson was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother and was a life long avid worker in the Disciples of Christ Church.  Mrs. Henderson is survived by four sons, Frank Albert and wife Kathy of Kodak, TN, Bill Albert and wife Bess of Raleigh, NC, Steward Albert and wife Sandra of Florence, SC, and David Albert of Raleigh, NC; step-sons, Jimmy Henderson and wife Docia and Paul Henderson and wife Anne all of Falkville, AL and John Henderson and wife Sarah of Decatur, AL; step-daughters, Lucretia Jones and husband Don of Falkville, AL and Rebecca Bartholomew and husband Karl of Hartselle, AL; one sister Ethel Holmes of Elizabeth City, NC; twenty nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.  Besides her parents and first husband, she was predeceased by five brothers, Melvin Bunch, Herman Bunch, Graham Bunch, Shelton “Poss” Bunch, and Winfred Bunch; sister Mariam Raper; and one grandson Frank Joseph Albert, III.  After a funeral service on Monday, October 25, 2010 at Peck Funeral Home in Hartselle, AL, the family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel on Thursday, October 28, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.  A graveside funeral service will be held at New Hollywood Cemetery in Elizabeth City, NC on Friday, October 29, 2010 at 11:30 a.m.  Twiford Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909 is serving the Henderson family.  Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.twifordfh.com.

Gene Carter

Gene R. Carter, 74, a long time resident of the Outer Banks, passed away suddenly in Bertie County, NC. For many years, Gene owned and operated Seaside Screens in Kill Devil Hills, NC. His most recent job was sales representative for Ace Hardware in Corolla.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy, of the home; son Michael and husband, Dr. David Rousseau of Essex, MA; daughter Holli Thomasson of Welcome, NC; daughter Susan Kermon of Winston-Salem, NC; and daughter Melissa Winfree and husband, Shawn, of Greensboro, NC. Also three granddaughters, Samantha and Maggie Thomasson and Carter Elizabeth Winfree. In addition, he is survived by his brothers Sid Carter and wife, Flo, of Tequesta, FL; and Harold Carter and wife, Nancy, of Longmont, CO. He also has several nieces and nephews.

Gene was predeceased in death by his parents, Lewis and Pauline Carter of Kelford, NC.

A memorial service was held on Monday, Oct. 25 at St. Andrew’s By-the-Sea Episcopal Church, Nags Head, NC, with the Rev. Phil Glick officiating.
