William Douglas (Sweet William) Smith, 65, of Manteo, NC passed away at his residence on November 30, 2010.  Born in Roanoke Rapids, NC, he was the son of Coial and Nellie Smith.  He was also preceded in death bye; two brothers, Frederick and Cecil Smith; one sister, Virginia Norres.  His most recent job was a delivery driver for Car Quest.

He is survived by his wife, Linda of the home; two sons, Michael Smith of Manteo, NC and Mark Smith of Raleigh, NC; one daughter, Alison Smith and fiancé Jose Lopez of Manteo, NC; two sisters, Shirley Mosley of Roanoke Rapids, NC and Joyce Baker and husband Donald of Wythefield, VA; three brothers, Nelson Smith of Sutton, AK, Burchell Smith and wife Clara of Colerian, NC and Ronald Smith and wife Patsy of Roanoke Rapids, NC; ten grandchildren, Savannah, Katie, Brianna, Malki, Tiffany, Ashley, Tyler, Jenna, Whitney, and  Zack; one great-grandchild, Faith.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday December 11, 2010 at 2:00PM in Twiford Colony Chapel in Manteo, NC.  In lieu of flowers memorial Donations may be made to Community Care Clinic of Dare, 2 Juniper Trail Kitty Hawk, NC 27949.

Brian Leary

Brian Leary

Brian Joseph Leary, 40, of 155 Perkins Road, Camden, NC, died unexpectedly Saturday, November 27, 2010 at Albemarle Hospital.  Born in Hampton, VA, he was the son of Calvin Preston Leary, Sr. and Raymonde M. B. Leary of Camden, NC.  Mr. Leary was a self-employed HVAC technician and an avid fisherman.  He was a member of Camden United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Leary is survived by his daughter, Alicen Raymonde Leary; Alicen’s half-sister, Victoria Keaton and her daughter, Bryonna Sadler; and their mother, Katrina Ann Bogue Leary of Camden, NC; sisters, Theresa L. Murphy and husband Joseph of Edenton, NC, Leota Woiteshek and husband Lee of Pueblo, CO, and Margaret L. Crollman of Durham, NC; brother, Calvin P. Leary, Jr. and wife Dr. Patricia Leary of Hampton, VA; nieces, Sarah Woiteshek, Kathleen Leary, Heather Perry, and Danielle Woiteshek; nephews, Michael Crollman, Christopher Leary, Christopher Perry, and Daniel Hilliard, III; and his great niece, Madison Perry.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, December 2, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Rev. David Moehring and Rev. Wayne Wood officiating. Marjorie Freeman

Mrs. Marjorie Bateman Scott Freeman, 80, of 121 Mallard Street, Grandy, NC, died Monday, November 29, 2010 at her residence.  A native of Pasquotank County, she was the daughter of the late Burfoot Bateman and Margaret Corbett Bateman and the widow of Johnnie Duke Scott, Jr. and Earl Freeman.  She was a cashier at Wal-Mart and a member of Riverside Baptist Church.  Mrs. Freeman is survived by three daughters, Corrie Edwards and husband Cleve of Creswell, NC, Phyllis Ange and husband Al of Plymouth, NC, and Lynn Pinner and husband Johnny of Grandy, NC; two sons, Duke Scott and wife Sylvia of Williamston, NC and Rodney Scott of Grandy, NC; one sister, Martha Bateman of Elizabeth City, NC; nine grandchildren, Chris, Cee, Carolina, Jennifer, Christy, Brian, Kevin, Ryan, and Nicole; and eight great grandchildren.  She was pre-deceased by a son, Kenneth Scott in 1960.  A graveside service will be Thursday, December 2, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in Old Hollywood Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Tom Oliver officiating.  The family will receive friends at the residence. Alida Burgess

Alida Gregory Burgess, 97, of 103 Rosewood Avenue, Elizabeth City, NC, died Sunday, November 28, 2010 at her residence.  Born in Camden County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Clyde and Daisey Kight Gregory and was the wife of the late Norman Burgess.  She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.   Mrs. Burgess is survived by her daughters, Rae Eley of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Portia Lee Burgess and husband Wilse of Shiloh, NC, and Phyllis Lane and Robert Sawyer of Elizabeth City, NC; eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.  In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Walter Eley.  Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Rev. David Hughes

David Henry Hughes, 76, of 120 Milltown Road, Shiloh, NC died Sunday, November 28, 2010 at Sentara Barco Nursing Home in Barco, NC. Born in Norfolk, VA, he was the son of the late Mack Sawyer Hughes and the late Addie Forehand Hughes, and was the husband of the late Nelson Nixon Hughes.  Mr. Hughes was a retired jailer at Albemarle District Jail.  Following retirement, he went to work for the Perquimans County Sheriff’s Department as a Bailiff.  Mr. Hughes was a member of the National Guard from 1952 to 1964, and a charter member of South Camden Volunteer Fire department from 1956-1997. Also, he was a member of Providence Baptist Church in Shawboro, NC, and a past Master of Widow’s Son Lodge # 75 AF & AM.  Along with his son, Stephen Nixon Hughes of Spearsville, LA, he is survived by a grandson, William Henry Hughes of Walton, OK; a sister, Nora Virginia Smithson of South Mills, NC; a great granddaughter, Skylar Hughes of Spearsville, LA; a brother Cecil G. Speight of Elizabeth City, NC; and a special friend, Edna O. Anderson.  Funeral Services with Masonic Rites will be conducted on Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Rev. Charles M. Stevens officiating.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and also in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service. Hazel Ivey

Hazel Penland Ivey, 84, of 106 S. McMorrine Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died on Sunday, November 28, 2010 at Albemarle Hospital.  Born in Buncombe County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Judson Enoch Penland and the late Martha Ann Elizabeth Penland and was the wife of the late James McCoy Ivey.  Mrs. Ivey belonged to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness.  She is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.  In addition to her husband and her parents, Mrs. Ivey was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters.  A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel. Joan Bierwerth

Elizabeth Joan Armstrong Bierwerth, 83, daughter of Gladys Mae and Elmer Charles Sanders (deceased) passed away on November 28, 2010 at Sentara-Barco Nursing Home in Currituck County, NC. She is predeceased by her first husband, Edwin Joseph Armstrong of twenty seven years who was the father of son, Mark L. Armstrong (wife Cindy Armstrong) living in Oregon and daughter Lauren L. Seamen (husband Mark Seaman) living in Washington. Stepchildren include Leslie Arnold (ID), Cindi Bierwerth (ID), and Wm. Bierwerth (NY). Grand children include Katelyn and Kyle Armstrong (OR), Jessica Johnson (WA), Kelly Aho (WA), and Jason Seaman (deceased), and Tom and William Arnold (ID). Great grandchildren include Bailey Aho (WA), Allison and Benjamin Johnson (WA), Cameron and Ashlynn Seamen (CA). In addition to other surviving family members, Joan leaves her husband Donald B. Bierwerth (Southern Shores, NC) of 34 years – worn out!

Mrs. Bierworth attended Butler University, was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority and while living in Indianapolis (IN), volunteered at the Indiana School for the Blind, was a Cub Scout and Girl Scout Leader, and worked with the Crossroads Guild Rehabilitation Center for Children. She was Past President of Benefits Guild for Young Retarded Adults and while living in Pittsburg (PA), volunteered as Past President of the Welcome Wagon Satellites. While living in Southern Shores (NC), she volunteered as Secretary of the Southern Shores Civic Association, participated with the Southern Shores Long Range Planning Committee, and was a founding member of the Republican Women’s Organization and Partners in Prosperity. She was also Past President and Lifetime Member of the Nags Head Surf Fishing Association.

A Graveside Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 pm on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at Austin Cemetery in Kitty Hawk, NC with Rev. Curtis Campbell officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Dare Home Health and Hospice, P.O. Box 1000, Manteo, NC 27954.

Geraldine Tandy

Geraldine Meekins Tandy, 64, of Frisco NC, passed away at her residence on Friday, November 26, 2010.  Born on September 26, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Edison Willis Meekins and the late Audrey Mae Field Meekins. 

Mrs. Tandy will be remembered as an active member of the Hatteras Island Community including 32 years as a Preschool Teacher at Buxton United Methodist Church, an active membership at Hatteras United Methodist Church, and by working at “Changing Tide/Locomotion” in Buxton.  Her presence in the community will be missed by many.

Surviving are her daughters, Emily Tandy of Coinjock, NC, Ami Tandy of Roanoke Rapids, NC, and her son, Garrett Tandy of Frisco, NC.  She is also survived by her brother, Douglas Meekins of Washington, D.C.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, December 4, 2010 at Hatteras United Methodist Church with Rev. Cory Oliver, Rev. Dwight Burrus, and Rev. Roger Barnett officiating.  The burial of Cremated Remains will occur immediately following the service.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation, P.O. Andrew Borton

Andrew James Borton, 24, of 315 West Church St., Elizabeth City NC died Wednesday, November 24, 2010 in Elizabeth City. He was born in Virginia Beach, VA to Joretta Wilson, also of Elizabeth City, and Rick Borton, of Roanoke, VA.  Due to his father’s service in the Navy, Andrew’s family moved several times during the early years of his childhood.  They spent several years in Adak, Alaska, and eventually settled in Elizabeth City, NC.  Andrew graduated from Pasquotank County High School in 2004, and he attended Elizabeth City State University.  Though he had many interests, Andrew was an adept musician.  He loved to play guitar, and did so in several local bands over the years.  Andrew is remembered by those who knew him as a kind and compassionate son, brother, and friend, whose boundless energy and laughter made him beloved by all who knew him 

He is survived by his mother and step father, Joretta and Ross Wilson of Elizabeth City, his father and stepmother, Rick and Vickie Borton of Roanoke, VA: his elder brother Wesley Borton and future sister-in-law Jenna Miller; his younger sister Nicole Borton; his stepbrothers Erik Wilson, Ryan Wilson, and Bradley Wilson; his stepsisters Jessica and Emily Wilson, all of Elizabeth City, NC; his grandmothers, Millie Nissen of Las Cruces, New Mexico and Edith Wilson of Merwin, Missouri; and many aunts, uncles, ,cousins and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted Sunday, November 28, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Toni Wood officiating.  The interment will follow at a later date in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The family will receive friends  Sunday beginning at 12:00 noon at the funeral home. Jamie Beth (DeGregory) Michalski of South Mills NC, originally from Coventry, RI, died at her residence surrounded by her loving family on Friday, November 26, 2010 at the age of 38, following a four-month battle against cancer.  She was born in Warwick, RI and was the beloved wife of Mark S. Michalski, and loving mother of Mark T. Michalski.  She is survived by her parents, Joan (Langevin) and Humbert DeGregory of Coventry RI, sister Tonia Wilson and husband John of Denver, CO, and brother Andrew DeGregory of Coventry, RI, her mother-in-law, Mrs. Blanche Michalski and  brother-in-law Edward Michalski.  She is also survived by her maternal grandmother, Simone N.
