Joan Bierwerth
Southern Shores, NC
Elizabeth Joan Armstrong Bierwerth, 83, daughter of Gladys Mae and Elmer Charles Sanders (deceased) passed away on November 28, 2010 at Sentara-Barco Nursing Home in Currituck County, NC. She is predeceased by her first husband, Edwin Joseph Armstrong of twenty seven years who was the father of son, Mark L. Armstrong (wife Cindy Armstrong) living in Oregon and daughter Lauren L. Seamen (husband Mark Seaman) living in Washington. Stepchildren include Leslie Arnold (ID), Cindi Bierwerth (ID), and Wm. Bierwerth (NY). Grand children include Katelyn and Kyle Armstrong (OR), Jessica Johnson (WA), Kelly Aho (WA), and Jason Seaman (deceased), and Tom and William Arnold (ID). Great grandchildren include Bailey Aho (WA), Allison and Benjamin Johnson (WA), Cameron and Ashlynn Seamen (CA). In addition to other surviving family members, Joan leaves her husband Donald B. Bierwerth (Southern Shores, NC) of 34 years – worn out!
Mrs. Bierworth attended Butler University, was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority and while living in Indianapolis (IN), volunteered at the Indiana School for the Blind, was a Cub Scout and Girl Scout Leader, and worked with the Crossroads Guild Rehabilitation Center for Children. She was Past President of Benefits Guild for Young Retarded Adults and while living in Pittsburg (PA), volunteered as Past President of the Welcome Wagon Satellites. While living in Southern Shores (NC), she volunteered as Secretary of the Southern Shores Civic Association, participated with the Southern Shores Long Range Planning Committee, and was a founding member of the Republican Women’s Organization and Partners in Prosperity. She was also Past President and Lifetime Member of the Nags Head Surf Fishing Association.
A Graveside Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 pm on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at Austin Cemetery in Kitty Hawk, NC with Rev. Curtis Campbell officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Dare Home Health and Hospice, P.O. Box 1000, Manteo, NC 27954.

John Spencer
John Wade Spencer, 68, of 168 Shady Lane, Hertford, NC died Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at his residence. Born in South Norfolk, VA he was the son of the late Cleophus Spencer and Lillian Armstrong Spencer. He was a retired market manager for Food Lion and a US Navy Veteran.
He is survived by a daughter, LaDonna Gail Spencer of Camden, NC; a son, Jonathan Scott Spencer of Norfolk, VA; the mother of his children, Brenda Spencer Slack of Norfolk, VA; three sisters, Faye Hassell of Sligo, NC, Judy Watson and Jennie Spencer both of Smithfield, NC. He was pre-deceased by a brother Fredie Forbes.
A memorial service will be Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Twiford Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Bill Bailey officiating. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the lobby of the funeral home. Evelyn Mason
Evelyn Mason, 93, of 200 River Bridge #102, Camden, NC died Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at the Albemarle Hospital. Born in Hyde County, she was the daughter of the late William Amos Mayo and Myrtle Virginia Sewells Mayo and the widow of Hilton Thomas Mason, Sr. She was a homemaker, and avid gardener, and a friend to many. She is survived by a daughter, Mary Ann Mason of Camden, NC; three sons, Hilton Thomas Mason, Jr., and wife Dorothy of Titusville, FL, William David Mason and wife Patricia of Moyock, NC, and James Anthony Mason and wife Judy of Elizabeth City, NC; eight grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren. The funeral will be a private graveside service. The family will receive friends Thursday at the residence of James and Judy Mason, 128 Pailin Creek Road, Elizabeth City, NC, and Friday after 1:00 PM. Charlie Sawyer
Charlie J. Sawyer, 91, of, South Mills, NC died Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at his residence. A native of Camden County, he was the son of the late Claude Roughton and Sadie Sawyer Roughton and the husband of Annie Cartwright Sawyer. He was a retired engineer from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, a US Navy Veteran of WW II, and attended Ebenezer Baptist Church. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling the American Southwest spending winters in Nevada and Arizona.
Besides his wife of sixty-two years, he is survived by a daughter, Pamela Rainard and husband Lynn of Virginia Beach, VA; two sons, Charles Sawyer and wife Carroll of Chesapeake, VA, and Claude Benjamin Sawyer of Portsmouth, VA; seven grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Frances Martine.

Thomas Sawyer
Thomas Irving Sawyer, 63, of 466 Horseshoe Road, South Mills, NC died Sunday, December 26, 2010 at his residence. Born in Camden County, NC, he was the son of the late William Henry Sawyer and the late Maxine Walston Sawyer and was the husband of Barbara Upton Sawyer of the residence. Mr. Sawyer was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church where he had been a past Deacon. He was retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard, had served on the South Mills Water Association Board and was Past President of the South Mills Ruritan Club.
Along with his wife of 46 years, Mr. Sawyer is survived by his sons, Daniel Irving Sawyer and wife Cindy and Timmy Sawyer and wife Ginger, all of South Mills, NC; sisters, Maude Staples and husband Alton of Wendell, NC and Linda DeMuth and husband Wener of Germany; six grandchildren, Ashley, Crystal, Jeffrey, Josh, Corin, and Gage Sawyer; and one great granddaughter, Finley Ann Creef.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church with Rev. Shane Smith officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church and at other times at the residence. Evelyn Malieswski
Evelyn Spruill Malieswski, 80, of 118 Pineview Drive, Elizabeth City, NC passed away on Saturday, December 25, 2010. Born in Elizabeth City, she was the oldest daughter of the late Richard Daniel Spruill and Lillie Lawrence Spruill. She was a member of First Christian Church.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Charles “Ski” Malieswski, two daughters, Dana Bailey, husband Marvin and Judy Brown, husband Grady all of Elizabeth City. She is also survived by her youngest sister, Judy Meads, husband Clevie and is predeceased by her sister Shirley Brown and husband Charles of Goldsboro, NC. Surviving grandchildren are Aimee Brown Williams, husband Kevin of Winston Salem, Devon Caddy Morrison, husband Stuart of Savannah, GA, Greg Brown, wife Juliene and Jeff Caddy, all of Elizabeth City. Surviving great grandchildren are Sydney, Ethan and Trevor Williams of Winston Salem, Garrett Brown of Elizabeth City and Waverly Morrison of Savannah, GA.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Twiford Memorial Chapel with Rev. Bill Roberts and Rev. Perry Turner officiating. The family will receive friends and family following the service and at other times at their residence. Helen Buck
Helen Buck, 66, of 121 Brumsey Landing Drive, Moyock, NC died Thursday, December 23, 2010 at her residence. Born in Passiac, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Charles Gerhardt Dost and the late Evelyn Viola Weiler Dost. Helen was retired from Civil Service. She enjoyed gardening, crafting, genealogy, and spending time with family.
Helen is survived by her daughters, Tani Fawn Cornelius (husband Al) of Virginia Beach, VA and Raven Dawn Huprich (husband Dave) of Strasburg, OH; a son, Stephen Troy Buck (wife Lynn) of Lexington, KY; a sister, Charlotte Elizabeth LaGrone (husband Ray) of Port Angeles, WA; a brother, Edwin Dost of WA; and eight grandchildren.
In accordance with her wishes, Helen will be cremated. The family will receive friends at the residence on Monday, January 3, 2010 from 6 – 8 pm. Helen will be buried in Bremerton, WA. Jerry Coberly
Jerry Mack Coberly, 73, of Kill Devil Hills, died Thursday, December 23, 2010 in Raleigh, NC. Born in Randolph County, WV, he was the son of the late Emery Camden Coberly and Beulah Jane Stover Coberly. He was a retired accountant with Gary Smith, CPA in Frederick County, MD and was a member of Stillwaters Baptist Church in Nags Head.
Mr. Coberly is survived by his wife, Mary Catherine Ferguson Coberly of the home; a daughter, Michelle Coberly Hoffman and husband, Aaron of Rising Sun, MD; two sons, James Allen Coberly and wife, Jamie of Kill Devil Hills, NC and William Glen Coberly and wife, Michele of Wake Forest, NC; and six grandchildren, LeAnn and Daniel Hoffman and Jared, Sarah, Abigail, and Elizabeth Coberly.
A memorial service will be held at Stillwaters Baptist Church on Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 11:00 AM by Pastor Tony Facenda.

John Harbin
John Lester Harbin, 75, of 1005 Consolidated Road, Elizabeth City, NC, passed away on Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at his residence. Born in Marion, OH, he was the son of the late Weldon and Mrs. Dorthea Harbin and was the husband of Ethel Collins Harbin of the residence. Mr. Harbin was retired from General Motors. He became a Master Mason in February of 1981and was High Priest, Ilustrious Master and Commander of Mansfield Commandery #21 at Mansfield, Ohio. John became active in Eureka Lodge #317 AF & AM as well as a member of the York Rite Bodies where he was a Past Commander and KYCH. Mr. Harbin was currently serving as Right Emminent Grand Commander of York Rite Bodies of North Carolina and was also involved with the Red Cross of Constantine. Along with his wife, Mr. Harbin is survived by two sons, VonAllen Harbin, John Robert Harbin and two step daughters, Rillalou Price and Nonnette Kay Forewith. He was preceded in death by a stepson, James Kohlman Martin. A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 27, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Twiford Memorial Chapel with Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating. Masonic Rites will be accorded at the funeral home. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service.
