Helen E. Daniels

Helen E. Daniels

Manteo, NC

Helen Daniels, a quintessential Outer Banker, passed away peacefully, in the presence of her family, in her home overlooking Shallow Bag Bay in Manteo, on Thursday, January 27, 2011 at the age of 88 and as the oldest member of the Roanoke Island Etheridge clan.   Helen, also known as “Honey” to many loved ones, was born on the Northend of Roanoke Island on January 10, 1923 as the daughter of Coast Guard Lt. Commander Walter G. Etheridge and Sybil Dough Etheridge. Helen’s maternal grandfather, Will S. Dough, was one of the four members of the National Lifesaving Service that helped the Wright Brothers on the day of the First Flight in 1903.   Helen spent her childhood years on Roanoke Island but attended and graduated from Elizabeth City High School where she was a basketball star.  She attended and received a degree from Hardbarger’s Business School in Raleigh.

On October 3, 1942 Helen married Luther Hamilton Daniels, her devoted husband for 68 years and who served several terms as a Councilman and Mayor of the Town of Manteo. They were married in the house at Northend, built with timbers from shipwrecks by her grandfather, Patrick Etheridge who had received a Congressional Medal of Honor for Lifesaving in the National Lifesaving Service and who is credited with the famous Coast Guard saying, “The Blue Book says we’ve got to go out and it doesn’t say a damn thing about coming back”.

Helen held real estate licenses in three states and also worked for the Coastland Times, the Army Corps of Engineers and the Selective Service.  Helen shied away from limelight but did much to help others. She volunteered as an aid during World War II at Mt. Vernon Hospital in New York, tending to wounded soldiers for which she received a citation from the American National Red Cross.  She attended the Boy Scout College in Valley Forge, PA and served as a troop leader. Helen was a Vista Volunteer in Dare County.  She was co-founder of the Friends of Roanoke Island, which addressed environmental causes affecting the Island. She started an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting in the old Manteo town hall on the waterfront and that now meets at the Roanoke Island Presbyterian Church.  In 1968 Helen was confirmed in the St. Andrews By The Sea Episcopal Church. She dedicated her body to medical research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Helen is survived by her husband, Luther Hamilton Daniels and their three children and their spouses Sybil Daniels Ross (John Bowen Ross, Jr.), Luther Hamilton Daniels, Jr. (Connie Wright Daniels), and Walter Etheridge Daniels (Linda Markus Daniels), along with her nieces Anne Davis Creef, Barbara Jean Meekins, Helen McDonald, Kaye Davis, Patricia Salazar, Alice Mae Creef, nephews, Patrick Kee, Ricky  and William Daniels; grandchildren, Sybil Lynn Basnight Wilson, Michael Brynteson, Luther Jameson Daniels, Slater Patrick Daniels, and Etheridge Richard Daniels.   She was predeceased by her neice, Annie Laurie Key Collier, her brother, Ralph Etheridge and sisters, Willie Etheridge Jollif and Nonnie Etheridge Davis.

A Memorial Service will be held at 3 pm at Roanoke Island Presbyterian Church on Thursday, February 3, 2011.  A reception will follow at the church. Helen Daniels did not like cut flowers, having preferred living things.  The family requests that, instead of flowers, contributions be made to Outer Banks Conservationists, Inc., P.O. Box 970, Manteo, NC 27954 for the restoration and maintenance of the Etheridge Home place, the 19th century farmhouse and grounds of her great-grandfather, Adam Etheridge IV, which is now a public museum and historic site also at Northend.  One final exaltation:  Helen Daniels was a Democrat.
