Barbara Davenport Raines, 75, of 106 Harrell Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at her residence. A native of Fredericksburg, VA, she was the daughter of the late Mark Majett Davenport, Sr., and Bertie May Price Davenport and the wife of Stacey Lee Raines, Jr., of the residence. She was a homemaker, a counselor for EIC, and a member of Fountain of Life Pentecostal Church.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Cathy Ambrose and Carol Temple of Elizabeth City, NC; three sons, Donald Temple of Camden, NC, Aubrey Temple and Levi Temple of Elizabeth City, NC; a step daughter, Linda Perry of Camden, NC; a sister, Rita Doxey of Currituck, NC; nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and close friends Shirley and Harold Simons, Jr. She was pre-deceased by sons Richard Temple, Mike Temple and stepson Jimmy Temple.

A graveside funeral service will be held Friday, June 3, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in New Hollywood Cemetery with the Rev. Preston Pitchfork officiating. Clara Reese Poyner Whitehurst passed away Tuesday, May 31, 2011. She was born in Moyock, NC on September 6, 1933 and was the daughter of the late Walter Martin Poyner, Sr. and Nellie Williams Poyner and was the widow of John William Whitehurst. Mrs. Whitehurst was employed by Currituck Grain for over forty years.

She is survived by her son, John Whitehurst, Jr. and wife Ryanee of Currituck, NC; her daughter, Nell Cagnoni and husband Kag of Naperville, IL; her brother, Walter Martin Poyner, Jr. and wife Marilyn Guyer Poyner of Jacksonville, NC; and a brother-in-law, Harry Faircloth, Sr. of Camden, NC. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Alice Poyner Faircloth.

A graveside service will be conducted Thursday, June 2, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Moyock Memorial Cemetery with her nephew, the Rev. William Martin Poyner officiating. Kenneth Perine

Kenneth Arthur Perine, 79, passed away at home on Chicahauk Trail in Southern Shores on Monday, May 30, 2011. Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Edwin Perine and the late Laura Perine (nee Hammond). He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nancy Perine (nee Reynolds).

Mr. Perine proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the American Legion – Coinjock. He and Nancy moved to Southern Shores in August of 1996, was an avid stamp collector and a member of the Outer Banks Stamp Club.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Diane Ketcham and husband David of Freehold, NJ, Cindy Petruk of Limington, ME, and his sons, David Perine and wife Annette of Winslow Township, NJ, Jeffrey Perine and wife Sherry of High Point, NC. Also left to cherish his memory are his eight grandchildren, Dana Ketcham, Patrick Ketcham, Steven Perine, Mallory Perine, Michelle Perine, Erica Perine, Michael Petruk III, and Benjamin Petruk.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, June 3, 2011 at Twiford Funeral Home in Manteo. Interment of Cremains will immediately follow the service in Southern Shores Cemetery. Mary Brinkley Poyner, 85, of 4174 Caratoke Highway, Barco, NC died Sunday, May 29, 2011 at the Albemarle Hospital. A native of Corapeake, NC, she was the daughter of the late Otis Robertson Brinkley, Sr., and Mattie Estelle Brinkley Brinkley and the widow of Caleb Benjamin Poyner, Sr. She was a member of Jackson Baptist Church and recently attended Coinjock Baptist Church. She was a school bus driver and retired as manager of Central Elementary School Cafeteria in Currituck County.

She is survived by a daughter, Sandra P. DeBerry and husband Allen of Seaboard, NC; two sons, Caleb Benjamin Poyner, Jr., of Grandy, NC and Ryland Poyner and wife Luella of Barco, NC; a sister, Elsie B Best of Chesapeake, VA; two brothers, Howard Brinkley of Norfolk, VA and A. J. Brinkley of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; two grandchildren, Christopher Allen DeBerry of Seaboard, NC and Megan Poyner of Barco, NC; and a great granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth DeBerry of Seaboard, NC. She was pre-deceased by three brothers, Otis Robertson Brinkley, Jr., Otis Monroe Brinkley and Earl Brinkley, and a granddaughter, Sabrina Lynn Poyner.

Funeral services will be Thursday, June 2, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. J. Scott Finicum officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Jerry Dennis Bandy, 66, of 140 Keeter Barn Road, South Mills, NC died at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital Sunday, May 29, 2011. A native of Greenfield, CA, he was the son of the late Eugene Bandy and Linda Bandy, and was the husband of Betty Weaver Bandy of the home. Mr. Bandy was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church and a member of the Ruritan Club of South Mills, NC.

Along with his wife, Mr. Bandy is survived by his daughter, Tami Shortall and husband John of Chesapeake, VA; his son, Michael Bandy of Springhill, Fl; his sister Anita Barnett of MT; and five grandchildren. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by one brother and one sister.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 4, 2011, at 11:00 am at Twiford Memorial Chapel by Pastor Frank Thigpen. CWO-3 Irvin Elliott Dean, USCG ret, age 79, of 137 Texas Road, Shiloh, NC died Saturday evening, May 28, 2011 in the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Dean was born on May 5, 1932 in Elizabeth City, NC to the late Sanford Leary Harris and the late Addie Pierce Harris. He was a former member of Hall Lodge #53 AF & AM and a member of VFW Post #6060. Mr. Dean served in the US Air Force and later served in the USCG, retiring after 20 years of service as CWO-3.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Nell Wright Dean of the home, three sons, William Dean of Shiloh, NC, Heywood Dean of Camden, NC and Keith Dean and wife, Donna of Camden, NC. Also, surviving are two grandchildren, Bruce K. Stallings and Heather Ambrose and a great grandchild, Kai Miller. He was preceded in death by a sister, Erlaine Randolph.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at 11:00am in Twiford Memorial Chapel, Church Street. Burial with military honors will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Frances “Janet” Meiggs, beloved wife and mother, passed from this earth Saturday, May 28, 2011 in Raleigh, NC. Born in Norfolk, VA, she was the daughter of the late Edith Brilliant and Matthew LaGasse and was the wife of the late Robert “Bobby” Meiggs.

Mrs. Meiggs is survived by her children, Edie Wombolt (Duane), Amy Meiggs (Kelly Harrell) and David Meiggs (Stacey); her granddaughter, Hayley Cato (Susan); and her grandson, Matthew Meiggs. The family would like to express their gratitude to the wonderful staff at Wake Medical Center, Raleigh, NC and to the loving and caring staff at Wake Hospice Home in Raleigh, NC.

Mark R. “Josh” Wood, 52, of Kill Devil Hills died Friday, May 27, 2011.
Josh was born May 25, 1959 in Charlottesville, Virginia, son of Bobby T. Wood and the late Fay Remsen Wood.
Josh was a loving husband, father, son, and brother and a friend to many. A native of Newport News, Va., Josh graduated from the University of Virginia before settling in the North Carolina Outer Banks. Josh was a self employed professional painter in that area for over twenty years. Josh’s first love was his family, and he also enjoyed fishing and the outdoors. He will be missed by all of the many whose lives he touched.
Josh is survived by his wife, Jean Hardy Wood and son Walker Hardy Wood, of Kill Devil Hills, his daughter, Lindsay Brianna Wood, a student at East Carolina University, his father, Bobby T. Wood of Smithfield Va. and Kill Devil Hills, his brother, Keith C. Wood , wife Cathy and niece, Hannah, of Southern Shores, N.C.

Elinor Hampton Jones, 87, of 112 South Griffin Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Thursday, May 26, 2011 at her home. Born in Currituck County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Paul L. and Ina Midgett Hampton and was the wife of the late Charles Ives Jones, Sr. She worked for U.S. Customs and the United States Coast Guard with Vessel Documentation and was a member of Pilmoor United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Jones is survived by her son, Charles I. Jones, Jr. of Elizabeth City, NC and significant other, Pamela S. MacLagen and her daughter, Ashley Klein of Edenton, NC; a step-daughter, Shelia Jones Lassiter of Elizabeth City, NC; two step-grandchildren, Peter B. Price and Emily Farmer Furst; six step-great-grandchildren; nieces, Paula Minges of Southport, NC and Jeni M. Kay of Wake Forest, NC; Deborah Moore of Apex, NC; brother and sister in law, William W. Jones Sr. and wife Rosemary H. Jones of Smithfield, NC; and nephews, W. Watt Jones, Jr. and C. Leigh Jones.
