Edward Laurence Phalen, Sr., 66, of 105 Howard Street, Camden, NC died Friday, July 29, 2011 at his residence. Born in St. Lawrence, NY, he was the son of the late Laurence Phalen and Myrtle Harris Phalen and was the husband of Marietta Catlin Phalen of the residence.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Lisa Phalen and Sheila Phalen, both of Camden, NC; a son, Edward Phalen, Jr. of Hertford, NC; a sister, Carol Hawthorn of Harrisville, NY; ten grandchildren, Katrina Wilson, Bradly Phalen, Tiffany LaRock, Kenny LaRock, Eddie Phalen, Dylan LaRock, Nelson Phalen, Nick Doxey, Rocky Douglas, and Sara Douglas; and three great grandchildren, Ayden Diaz, Aaliyah LaRock, and Madison Uthe.

Theron “Randy” Dabbs, Jr.

Theron Randolph Dabbs, Jr, 71, of 10222 Douglas Oaks Circle #204 Tampa, FL died Tuesday, July 26, 2011 in the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital. He was a native of Durham, NC, son of the late Theron Randolph and Mrs. Ottis Allen Dabbs, Sr., and the husband of Betty Hugo Dabbs of the residence. Mr. Dabbs was an Electrical Engineer, a member of Eureka Masonic Lodge # 317 AF & AM, a 32 degree Mason, the Scottish Rite Bodies, Ben – Hur Shrine in Austin, TX, and a veteran of the United States Marine Corps having served in VietNam.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Vicky Linn Cooper and husband Mike; a son, Theron Randolph Dabbs, III and wife Stephanie all of Tampa, FL and six grandchildren, Chelsea Dabbs, Theron R. Dabbs, IV, Shelby Dabbs, Laurena Danielle Dabbs, Aaron Cooper and Jacob Cooper.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Gene Asbell officiating. Masonic Rites will be accorded at the cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m. and other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Wadell Harrell 547 Gliden Road, Hobbsville, NC. Phyllis S. Johnson, 74, died Friday, July 29, 2011 at her residence. Born in Welch, WV, she was the daughter of the late Howard H. and Vicy Smith.
A graduate of National Business College, Phyllis came to the Outer Banks with her husband in 1973. Together they founded the CPA firm now known as Johnson, Burgess, Mizelle & Straub, LLP. She was elected Commissioner of the Town of Nags Head in 1982, serving four years in that office. She also served on the boards of The Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce, the Outer Banks Women’s Club, the Rotary-Ann Club and the Business Professional Women’s Association. An avid bowler, she competed in tournaments on both a regional and national level. Through her career, her service to the community and her hobbies, Phyllis developed friendships with people from all walks of life. She will be dearly missed.
Predeceased by her husband, Edgar M. Johnson, Jr., she is survived by his children, Benjamin Johnson and wife, Susan of Farmville, VA, Andrew Johnson and wife, Margaret of Farmville, VA, Johanna J. Beasley and husband, Tommy of Colington, NC; a brother, Jerry D. Smith and wife, Lila of Bella Vista, AK; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Twiford Colony Chapel in Manteo, NC on Saturday July 30, 2011 at 11:00AM with the Rev. Teresa Holloway and Greg Delp officiating. The family will receive visitors at the home in Nags Head. Contributions in memory of Phyllis may be made to the American Red Cross, Dare County Hospice, and Hands of Hope.

Howard Paul Hannaman, 80, of 488 Harvest Point Road, Elizabeth City, NC died Thursday, July 28, 2011 at his residence. Born in Wood County, West Virginia, he was the son of the late William Roy and Mrs. Hazel Elizabeth Johnson Hannaman and was the husband of Judith Lloyd Hannaman of the residence. Mr. Hannaman was a graduate of West Virginia University where he received a degree in Electrical Engineering and later worked with the government. He was a member of Towne South Church of Christ and South Mills Church of Christ and served in the U.S. Navy.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Susann Heidler of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons, Howard Paul Hannaman II of Midland, VA and Jeffry Alan Hannaman of Beckley, West VA; two sisters, Mary Louise Marquis of Carson, VA and Anna Mae Stephenson of North Myrtle Beach, SC; nineteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

A private service will be conducted at a later date. Gordon Lee Pratt, Sr., 64, passed away at his residence in Wanchese, NC on Tuesday morning, July 26, 2011. Born in Schenectady, NY, he proudly served his country in the U. S. Army and later worked as a Handyman.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, MaryAnn C. Pratt, of the residence; six sons, Gordon Lee Pratt Jr. of Philadelphia, Bruce Lee of Swan Quarter, NC, Brian Jay of Manteo, NC, Rocky Joseph of Grandy, NC, Vaughn Kenneth of Wanchese, NC and Joseph Gordon of Philadelphia; three daughters, Lorrie Ann Hanssler of Manteo, NC, Dahna of Philadelphia and Debby of Wisconsin
In accordance with his wishes, he will be cremated and the family is planning a Memorial Service for a future date.

Leola Estelle Perry Toler, 86, died Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at the home of her daughter, Daphne Toler Casper (Raye) Kitty Hawk, NC. She was the daughter of the late Leon Hardy Perry and Eva Estelle O’Neal. She was a member of Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church. With her husband, Sidney, she operated the Kitty Hawk Grocery for a number of years. Mrs. Toler’s biggest love was for her children and grandchildren, and working in her garden.
Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Sidney Caleb Toler, a brother Norman Lee Perry, and a grandson Steven Ray Midgett.
Mrs. Toler is survived by two sisters, Doris Perry Pruitt of Kitty Hawk and Reda Perry Midgett (Edison) of Manteo. She has six children Tommy Toler and wife, Margaret Joy, of Wanchese, Sandy Toler Midgett and husband, Ray of Southern Shores, Blaine Toler and wife, Gail of Manteo, Daphne Toler Casper and husband, Raye of Kitty Hawk, April Toler Hardison and husband, Carl of Plymouth, NC and Melanie Toler and Tim Narron of Kitty Hawk. She is survived by eleven grandchildren, Les Toler and Ted Toler of Wanchese, Carrie Toler Booth of Raleigh, Randy Midgett of Elizabeth City, Phebe Toler Cooper of Kill Devil Hills, Kristian Blaine (Buddy) Toler of Kitty Hawk, Shannon Toler Glaser of Florida, Joshua Casper, Jesse Casper and Jeffrey Wescott of Kitty Hawk, Fred Melvin Wescott, III, of Greenville and thirteen great-grandchildren; and Shelia Hassell, Leola’s special care giver.
Family visitation will be a the home of Raye and Daphne Casper, 3952 Poor Ridge Road, Kitty Hawk, NC.
A graveside service will be in Austin Cemetery in Kitty Hawk, at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 29, 2011 by Rev. Kenneth Midgett.

Christopher Columbus “C.C.” Berry, 94 of 229 Smith Corner Road, Camden, NC died Monday, July 25, 2011 at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Berry, a native of Camden County, was the son of the late Zebulon B. Berry and Victoria Bertie Leary Berry and the widower of Nellie Cartwright Berry. He was a retired meter reader for VEPCO, a member of Shiloh Baptist Church where he was Sunday School Secretary for fifty years and a former deacon. He was a member of Widow’s Son Masonic Lodge 75 AF & AM and Order of Eastern Star # 44.

He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Annette Bush Berry of Camden, NC; a sister, Annie Ruth Berry of Nags Head, NC; four grandchildren, Jennifer Berry, Lynn Howard Berry, Jr., Christopher Berry, and Dennis Berry; two great grandchildren, Crystal Richardson and Owen Berry and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by two sons, Lynn Howard Berry, Sr., and Dennis Ray Berry, and three brothers, Zeb Berry, William Berry and Leonard Berry.

A memorial service will be Friday, July 29, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. Roland Cooper and the Rev F. Joe Griffith officiating. The family will receive friends immediately after the service at the church and at other times at the residence. Elijah Marcus “Mike” Lewis, 83, of 204 Culpepper Lane, Elizabeth City, NC died Monday, July 25, 2011 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was born on December 24, 1927 in Lowland, NC to the late Jonah J. Lewis, and Ollie Carawan Lewis. Mr. Lewis was a Korean War veteran, a member of the Eureka Lodge 317 AF & AM, New Bern Scottish Rites Consistory # 3, a Shriner, and a lifetime member of William Clarence Jackson VFW Post 6060. He worked for Nabisco Co. for 42 years as a sales representative and was a member of Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church.

Mr. Lewis is survived by his wife of 62 years, Rose Capps Lewis of the home; two sons, Richard A. Lewis and wife Shelly, Marcus S. Lewis and wife Jan, all of Elizabeth City, NC; a daughter, Cynthia L. Langer of Marshall, TX; sister, Pheba Doris Riddle and husband Ashby of Norfolk, VA; a brother Juston R. Lewis and wife Roxana of Suffolk, VA; eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and many loving nieces, nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by his sisters, Mae Scheier, Derlie James, and Lethia L. Wooton/Holcomb.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 28, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at Twiford Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Corey Miller officiating. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Joseph Edward Jennette, Jr., 82, of Chesapeake, VA died Saturday, July 23, 2011 at his residence. Born in Babylon, NY, he was the son of the late Joseph Edward and Ruby Woodal Jennette. He was a graduate of Cape Hatteras High School, a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard having retired as a Chief Boatswain Mate, and was a retired tug boat captain of 27 years with Norshipco.

Mr. Jennette is survived by his wife, Charlotte June Meekins Jennette of the residence; four daughters, Charlotte Dixon and husband, John “Skip” of Manteo, NC, Ruby Weston and husband, “Hot Rod” of Chesapeake, VA, Ramona Griffin of Manteo, NC, and Sandy Comey and husband, David of Chesapeake, VA; two sisters, Alice McCreevy and Josie Farrow both of Buxton, NC; two brothers, Steve and Dale Jennette both of Buxton, NC; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Dixon, Jed Dixon and wife, Amy, T.J. Leary, Lindsay Leary, Brandon Griffin and wife, Jamie, Colby Griffin, Justin Comey, and Ashlin Comey; and four great grandchildren, Cal and June Dixon and Madison and Mason Griffin. He was also preceded in death by a great granddaughter, Faith Griffin.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the Lighthouse Assembly of God with the Rev. Jonathan Bennett officiating. Burial will be in the Jennette Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at Twiford Funeral Home, Manteo on Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:00 PM.
