William Edward McHorney, 77, of Caratoke Highway, Barco, NC died Sunday, August 28, 2011 at Sentara Barco. A native of Camden County, NC, he was the son of the late Curtis and Mrs. Iva Cox McHorney Benton. He was retired from the US Air Force, an avid bowler and loved wood working.

Mr. McHorney is survived by a brother, Kenneth McHorney of Chesapeake, VA; many nieces, nephews, cousins; and special friend, Claude Hewitt. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Curtis Wesley McHorney.

A memorial service will be Monday, September 5, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at Rehoboth Baptist Church with Rev. Frank Thigpen officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post 6060. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service. W. Dwight Hooper

W. Dwight Hooper

W. Dwight Hooper, Sr., 84 of Southern Shores, died Friday, August 26, 2011 in Norfolk, VA. He was born March 10, 1927 in Stumpy Point NC to Alfred B. and Grace Gray Hooper. He graduated from Stumpy Point High School and from Louisburg College. He was a member of the Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church.

Dwight retired as President of the Norfolk Baltimore and Carolina Line, Inc. in 1984, after 34 years of service with the Norfolk, VA Company. He was a member and Past President of the Hampton Roads Chapter of the National Association of Accountants. Dwight was a War Veteran of the United States Coast Guard during World War II and served in the European and Asiatic Pacific area before being Honorably Discharged in May 1946. His unit was honored to march in President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s funeral procession in 1945 in Washington, DC. He was also a charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Outer Banks Post No. 10950 and served two terms as Post Commander. Being a native of the Outer Banks, Mr. Hooper was very familiar with it’s history and folklore. Dwight enjoyed fishing, golfing, gardening and traveling. Dwight enjoyed watching the nightly news and never missed a morning paper.

Dwight was predeceased by his parents Alfred B. and Grace Gray Hooper and his sister Maxine Quidley Martin.

Dwight is survived by his wife of 62 years, Phyllis W. Hooper originally of Stumpy Point; one daughter, Betty Hooper of Tokyo, Japan and Kitty Hawk, NC; three sons, Wiley Dwight Hooper II (Buddy) of Binghamton, NY, David Dwight Hooper of Norfolk, VA, and Michael Wise Hooper of Virginia Beach, VA; one sister, Rita H, Midgett of Manns Harbor, NC; two grandchildren, David Li Hooper and James Thomas Hooper; two great-grandchildren, Ryu and Reenie Hooper. Mr. Hooper is also survived by three “special” nieces and one nephew, Vivian Simpson of Hopewell, VA, Joan Keys of Edinberg, TX, Darlene Smith of Pine Knoll Shores, NC and nephew, Fred Midgett of Elizabeth City, NC.

Dwight was a wonderful husband, father, brother and friend. He will be missed by many.

A memorial service will be held at Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 3:00 PM. A reception will follow in the reception room of the Kitty Hawk Pier House. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church or Shiloh UMC Cemetery Fund, Stumpy Point, NC.

Brenda Waite

Brenda Lee Waite, 43, of 102 Castle Court, Elizabeth City, NC went home to be with her Lord Monday, August 29, 2011 at her residence. She was born in Buffalo, NY on November 12, 1967 to Robert and Carol Woolly Peters of Lockport, NY and was the wife of Thomas Michael Waite of the home. Mrs. Waite attended Buffalo State College in NY where she received a Bachelors degree in Art Education and a Masters in Art Therapy. Her professional career included work as a child therapist with the Beeman Child Guidance Clinic in Niagara Falls, NY and for Catawba County Area Mental Health Program in Hickory, NC, before turning to education as an Exceptional Education Teacher for Lincoln County Schools and, for the past eleven years, Camden Middle School. While employed by Camden County Schools, Mrs. Waite achieved National Board Certification and recognition as a Public Schools of NC Teacher of Excellence. She was a highly respected and inspiring advocate for learning disabled students.

With her beloved husband and parents, Mrs. Waite is survived by her daughter, Alex Tavenier of Delaware, OH; step-daughters, Lynne Murphy of Norfolk, VA and Erin Waite of Philadelphia, PA; step-sons Brian Waite of Ellicott City, VA and Kyle Waite of Dothan, AL; sisters, Kelly Hodges of Buffalo, NY and Roberta Betsch of Lockport, NY; grandchildren, Joseph Murphy, Mark Murphy, Ian Murphy, Natalia Waite and Sonia Waite; and special friends, Debra Dimingo, Jason and Denise Thomas and Diane Salvamoser.

A Memorial Service will be conducted Saturday, September 3, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Twiford Memorial Chapel with the Rev. William C. Sawyer officiating. Dorothy Adair Hayman, 87, of Proctorville, Ohio and formerly of Sun City, AZ died Friday, August 19, 2011 in a hospital in Huntington, WV. She was born November 14, 1923 in Newport News, VA to the late Roger B. and Clemma Hurdle Hayman. Ms. Hayman was a graduate of Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, NC majoring in business administration. She was a retired executive secretary for Beautrix Foods in Chicago, IL and later in Denver, CO. She was an avid traveler and loved music, especially the Opera.
Her immediate survivors are nine first cousins, Catherine B. Hill of Brunswick, GA, Billy Hurdle of Hertford, NC, Alice Hurdle Hofler of Sunbury, NC, Florine Hurdle Weeks of Elizabeth City, NC, D.T. Hurdle of Belvidere, NC, Carolyn Hurdle Sanders of Newport News, VA, Elizabeth Swindell Brannon of Waynesville, NC, June Hayman Harward of Charleston, SC and Jane Swindell Barringer of Sanford, NC; also surviving are numerous relatives and friends. Besides her parents, Ms. Hayman was preceded in death by a brother, Roger B. Hayman, Jr.

Robert Evans Foreman died in Naples, Florida August 25th, 2011. He was 90 years old. Bob was born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina November 23, 1920, to Lemuel Roscoe Foreman and Mary Culpepper Foreman. After attending Elizabeth City High School, he enrolled in Duke University from which he graduated with a B.A. degree in the class of 1942 during World War II. During the war, Bob served as a naval aviator and flight instructor, primarily in the Pacific theatre. After completing his college studies, Bob and his wife, Mary Ellen Thomas (Tommy), a graduate of Duke in the class of 1943 moved back to Elizabeth City where Bob began his career in the family lumber business with L.R. Foreman & Sons. In addition to managing that business and ultimately becoming its president, Bob served as president of the Southern Forest Products Association and president of the local Rotary Club.

Bob’s wife of 53 years, Tommy, died in 1995, and in 1996, Bob married Kathleen Watkins Dale, also a graduate of Duke University, class of 1943. During their years together, they lived both in Elizabeth City, North Carolina and Naples, Florida where they were members of the Naples Yacht Club and the Royal Poinsietta Club.

Bob is survived by his wife, Kathleen Watkins Dale Foreman, his daughter, Anne Foreman Barnes, of Gates Mills, Ohio, his son-in-law, William Barnes and his two granddaughters, Anne Evans Barnes of Beirut, Lebanon and Charlotte Gillett Barnes of New York City.

Also related to Mr. Foreman are Kathleen’s children and grandchildren: stepson, Mitchell Watkins Dale of Arlington, Virginia; stepson, Myron Lykins Dale, of Cincinnati, Ohio, (deceased); step daughter Kathy Dale McNair of Winnetka, Illinois; and stepdaughter, Holly Dale Howard, of Pasadena, California,(deceased). Mr. Foreman was also deeply loved by his eleven step grandchildren.

A memorial services will be held in Elizabeth City, North Carolina on September 17th at 4:00 pm at First United Methodist Church. A service in Naples, Florida will be held at the Bower Chapel on the Moorings Park campus on October 8th, 2011 at 4:00 p.m. The family requests no flowers, but memorials may be sent in Bob’s name to the Duke Chapel Annual Fund, Box 90581, Durham, North Carolina, 27708-0581 (Phone # 919-684-5955). Sue Mitchell Jones, lovingly known as Aunt Sue, 93, of US Highway 158, Newland Section of Elizabeth City, NC died Saturday, August 27, 2011 at her residence. A native of Atlanta, GA, she was the daughter of the late Milton D. Mitchell and Fannie Wilkie Mitchell and the widow of her loving husband Walter Kern Jones, Jr. She was a homemaker and a Baptist and had worked for Rucker and Sheely Department Store for many years.

Left to cherish her precious memories are two sisters, Betty M. Asbell of Conyers, GA and Anne M. Williams of Panama City Beach, FL. her nieces Pat and Pam Stallings of the home, niece Sherri Whitehurst and husband Hersey, nephew Ken Stallings and wife Debbie. Other survivors include many nieces and nephews, special friends and loving family members. Deep appreciation to her kind caregivers Eldora Brooks and Bernice Eason. The family would like to thank Dr. Neil DeNunzio and the Albemarle Hospice Staff.

A graveside funeral service will be Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Toni Wood officiating. Julie Kay Workman Osmon, 49, died at her residence in Nags Head, NC on Monday, August 29, 2011. Born in Bluefield, West Virginia on June 21, 1962, she was the daughter of Thelma Woodson Workman of Bluefield, VA and the late Ronald R. Workman.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 28 years, Frank Osmon; son, Joshua Osmon and Hayley Ward of Newland, NC; and daughters Carly Osmon of Asheville, NC and Terra Osmon of Raleigh, NC. Also surviving are her siblings and their families: Ray Workman, and wife, Pam, and children, Ronnie, Liz, Morgan, Roman, and Paige; Eric Workman, and wife, April, and sons, Eric Ryan and Jacob; Anne Hall, and husband, Michael, and children, Sydney Yost, Carrie Ellen and Lucas all of Bluefield, VA; and Jane Vencill and husband, Steve, and children , Hannah and Hayden Tickle, and Nick and Macy Vencill all of Belfast, Virginia; sister in law, Angela Osmon of Elizabeth City and children, Justin Faires and wife Katy and daughter Caroline of Florida, Courtney Koch; cousin in law Lisa Creef and husband, Butch Yost, daughter Kara; and cousin in law, Jordan Butler, all of Elizabeth City, NC.

In addition to her father, she was pre-deceased by maternal grandparents, Archie and Agnes (Harlow) Woodson; paternal grandparents, Glenn and Roslyn (Witt) Workman; sister-in-law, Alisa Harman Workman; nephew, Ryan Workman; in-laws, Carl and Millicent (Miller) Osmon; and cousin in law, Jennifer Butler.

Ms. Osmon is a 1980 graduate of Graham High School in Bluefield, VA and earned a MA in English with a concentration in Technical/Professional Communication and a certificate in Multicultural Literature at East Carolina University. She completed her BA at Elizabeth City State University with some coursework being completed at Bluefield State College and UNC-Wilmington. She received her National Board Certification in Adolescence and Young Adult/English Language Arts. While with Dare County School System Mrs. Osmon became the Manteo High School English Department Chair, initiated Poetry Out Loud, organized SAT preparation workshops, and completed the two year process to become a North Carolina Department of Public Instruction High School Certified Trainer of Writing.

She was recognized as the Sallie-Mae First Year Teacher of the Year for Dare County in 1993, named co-recipient of the Terry Sandford Award for MHS in 1998 and Manteo High School Teacher of the Year in 1999. She was actively involved in the Dare Education Foundation. Ms. Osmon’s walk to Emmaus, a group experience with talks and discussions presenting the theme of God’s grace, was one of her most inspiring journeys. Mrs. Osmon was a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church in Manteo, NC.

The Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, September 3, 2011 at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church in Manteo, NC. Oma Pearl Daniels

Oma Pearl Daniels

On Sunday August 28, Oma Pearl Daniels passed away in her home in Manns Harbor, the only home she had ever lived in during 91 years. Mrs. Daniels was born on March 18, 1920. The daughter of Clarence Lee Midgett and Hattie Beasley Midgett, she graduated from Elizabeth City High School in 1936. She later graduated from Strayer-Bryant & Stratton College in Baltimore, Maryland.

During World War II, she was employed by the Martin Aircraft Company prior to joining the Department of War, where she worked for another Manns Harbor resident, Ina Waterfield.

In 1942, she returned to her beloved hometown of Manns Harbor. On January 20, 1944, she married Thomas B. Daniels. Together, the couple had a daughter, Linda Lee, who survives her mother. During the 67 years she lived in Manns Harbor after WWII, she devoted herself to raising her daughter and to public service. For over 25 years, she served as the Assistant Post Mistress at the Manns Harbor Post Office. She was an active member of the Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church and the Methodist Women’s Association. She was also an active member of the Eastern Star. In 1976, she was initiated into the Betsy Dowd Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Mrs. Daniels is survived by her daughter, Linda Daniels Harris, her husband James W. Harris of Manns Harbor, NC and her cherished grandson, Jimmy Harris and his wife Tracy Campbell Harris of Atlanta, Georgia. In addition, she is survived by nieces, Doris A. Fry, Sally A. Scarborough, Sarah Owens, Della Basnight, all of Manteo, Hester Twiddy of Florida and nephews, St. Clair Basnight and Marc Basnight of Manteo.

Oma Pearl Daniels was a self-effacing lady who enriched the lives of all who were fortunate enough to come to know her. She cared deeply about each and every one of her many friends and was proudly devoted to her family. Oma Pearl was a loving person whose friendship was always there, without qualification, for any friend in need. She was extraordinary and will be missed by all who knew her.

The Funeral will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, September 1, 2011 at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church in Manns Harbor with the Rev. Bettie Francis officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service at the Midgett Family Cemetery, directly behind Mrs. Daniels’ residence at 6922 Highway 64. Following the interment, friends and family are invited to gather at Miss Oma’s residence for refreshments and fellowship. There will be an opportunity for viewing at Twiford Funeral Home in Manteo on Wednesday after 1:00 pm but the family will receive friends at Ms. Oma Pearl Daniels’ residence, 6922 Highway 64 in Manns Harbor. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made, in honor of Ms. Oma Pearl Daniels, to Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 95, Manns Harbor, NC 27953.

Walter Louis “Lou” Hopkins, 81, of Kitty Hawk, N.C., died August 26, 2011 at the Outer Banks Hospital. Born in Norfolk, VA he was the son of the late Walter H. and Elizabeth G. Hopkins.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Jean S. Hopkins, daughter, Diana Jo Hopkins Whitehead, his beloved grandchildren, “Katie” and John Whitehead. Also surviving are his brother, Howard L. Hopkins and sister, Sondra H. Sutton.
Lou attended Granby High, in Norfolk, VA, where he played basketball as one of the famous shining stars to the “Cinderella Team” winning the championship, after which he was offered several outstanding scholarships, as were most of the team’s players. After 25 years of owning his business, Tidewater Port Services, Inc., he and Jean retired to the Outer Banks of NC.
Lou has been a Khedive Shriner serving in the Provost guard.
A memorial service will take place at a later date with burial in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk, VA.
Donations to honor Lou’s memory may be made to Khedive Shriners, 645 Woodlake Drive, Chesapeake, VA 23320 for the Children’s Burn Center.

Jack Wood

Major Jack Lee Wood,USMC retired, 69 of Manteo, passed away Thursday, August 25, 2011, at his residence. He is survived by his wife, Nancy and children, Debbie and husband Mike Minton of Creswell and their three children, Codi Matthew and Mike, Linda and husband Ed Dick of Liverpool, PA and their five children, Joshua, Rebecca, Savannah, Charlie and Jack, Courtney and Ronald Thompson of Bladenboro,NC and their children, Elena, Trae, Turtle and Aiden.
Jack served his country for 32 years in the U.S. Marine Corps serving in conflicts from Vietnam to Operation Desert Storm. Jack was known for his generous heart for anyone who had a need or could help in anyway, Jack was there to help cheer them on.
A celebration of life will be in Twiford Colony Chapel, Tuesday, August 30, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. by Rev. Stephen Wescott and Rev. David J. Daniels. Burial with military honors will be in Manteo Cemetery.
