Ethel Ballance

Ethel Bundy Ballance, 93, of 720A Okisko Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, October 29, 2011 at Southaven Nursing Facility, Hertford, NC. Born in Pasquotank County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Josh and Kate Twiddy Bundy and was the wife of the late Charlie Eugene Ballance. Mrs. Ballance was a member of New Life Assembly of God. She was the owner of Ballance’s Groceries and enjoyed gardening, sewing and baking. Mrs. Ballance had also been a foster parent for twenty-three years and had had a total of 189 foster children.

Survivors include two daughters, Katie White and husband Charlie of Plymouth, NC and Tammy Byrum and husband Chris of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, Earnest Ballance and wife Ann of Elizabeth City, NC; two sisters, Gloria Bundy and Elizabeth Gaskins; thirteen grandchildren, twenty-nine great-grandchildren and sixteen great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Gracie Lee Russell.

A funeral service will take place Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Clay Manos officiating. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the lobby of the funeral home. Monday evening from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the residence. Nicholas F. Ferraro of Elizabeth City, NC died Thursday, October 27, 2011 at his home. Born in Wesley, RI, he was the son of the late Peter Fredrick and Santa Ferraro.

Mr. Ferraro is survived by a daughter, Santa Ferraro of Minneapolis, MN; two sons, Nicholas F. Ferraro, Jr. of Elizabeth City, NC and Joseph L. Ferraro of New York.

Lloyd Ray Jones, Sr., 86, of 1945 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, October 27, 2011 at Guardian Care of Elizabeth City. Born in Pasquotank County, NC, he was the son of the late Howard B. and Lillie J. Jones and was the husband of Alice Rhodes Jones of the home. Mr. Jones was a member of Berea Baptist Church; was a veteran of the United States Army; and was retired from the NC Department of Transportation.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Anita Jones Byrd and husband Donnie of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, Lloyd Ray “Tugboat” Jones, Jr. and wife Yvonne of Elizabeth City, NC; a brother, Braxton Jones of Tyner, NC; 8 grandchildren, Angela, Nichole, Toni, Karen, Rachel, Brittany, Laura, and Tyler and 8 great grandchildren. Along with his parents, Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his seven sisters, Frances, Pearl, Elizabeth, Katherine, Mary, Dana and Claudean and two brothers, Newton and Miles.

A funeral service will be conducted Sunday, October 30, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Berea Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Waller officiating. Burial will be in Koen Cemetery. Sarah Denby

Sarah Dozier “Miss Duckie” Denby, 94, of 2750 Caratoke Highway, Currituck, NC died Tuesday, October 25, 2011, in the Sentara Barco Nursing Facility. She was born on September 6, 1917 in Currituck County, NC to the late Phillip Clarence and Lula Sawyer Dozier and was the widow of the late Willie W. Denby. Mrs. Denby was a member of the Perkins United Methodist Church.

She is survived by one son, William Paul Denby and wife, Betty, of Chesapeake, VA; two sisters, Edith Newbern and Lillie Basnight both of Virginia Beach, VA; a brother, William C. “Mickey” Dozier of Currituck, NC. Also, she is survived by two grandchildren, Brenda K. Swindell and husband, Roy, and Walter P. Denby and wife, Kim; two great grandchildren, Korbyn Denby and Kaitlyn Denby and one great-great grandchild, Reanna Swindell. Mrs. Denby was preceded in death by four sisters, Marjorie Ellis, Opal Perry, Catherine Murray and Maudie Perry.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, October 29, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. in the Twiford Memorial Chapel, Church St., by Rev. Reginald W. William Forbes

William Marion “Bill” Forbes, 81, of 298 Country Club Drive, Camden, NC, died Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at Albemarle Hospital. Born January 15, 1930, he was the son of the late Wilson Lee “W.L.” Forbes, Jr. and Lucille Forbes. Mr. Forbes was retired from the United States Air Force after more than twenty years of honorable service. He later went to work for and retired from the Camden ABC Store where he made many friends.

Mr. Forbes is survived by his daughters, Carla Whitehurst of Morrisville, NC, Joyce Ward and husband Sonny of Shawboro, NC and Brenda Berry and husband Wilbur “W.R.” of Shawboro, NC; a son, William David Forbes and wife Goldie of Camden, NC; five grandchildren, Ashley John Whitehurst of Irmo, SC, Tabitha Renee Cruise and husband Justin of Currituck, NC, Lauren Ashley Forbes of Camden, NC, Brett David Forbes of Camden, NC, and Parker Christian Berry of Shawboro, NC; a great-granddaughter, Justine Renee Cruise of Currituck, NC; two sisters-in-law, Sue Forbes Campbell of Elizabethton, TN and Dorothy Evans “Dot” Forbes of Shawboro, NC; numerous nieces and nephews; and many great friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Norman Forbes and Wilson Lee Forbes, III; and one grandson, Christopher Brandon Whitehurst.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, October 27, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel. Burial with military honors will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. George Sarsany

George Edward “Eddie” Sarsany, 79, of Grandy, NC died Sunday, October 2, 2011 in Barco, NC. Born in Mount Pleasant, PA, he was the son of the late Michael and Anna Sarsany. He was a retired photographer and veteran of the U.S. Army.

Eddie is survived by his wife, Christa; two brothers, Paul and Joseph Sarsany both of Warren, OH and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret O’Malley and Barbara Gardner and two brothers, John Sarsany and Michael Sarsany, Jr.

Per his request his body is being cremated no services are planned at this time.

Helen Hicks Hart, 73, of Kill Devil Hills, died Saturday October 22, 2011 in Kill Devil Hills. Mrs. Hart was born in Sauk City, Wisconsin and was formerly employed at Gray’s Department Store and was a Catholic.

She was the daughter of the late Lester A. Hicks, Jr. and Isabel Thurner Hicks and was the wife of the late Vernon Brooks Hart, Sr.

Surviving are two sons, Jay Allan Hart of Kill Devil Hills and Vernon Brooks Hart, Jr. of Currituck; one brother, Lester Hicks of Wisconsin; and grandchildren, David Scarborough, Joseph Scarborough, Ashleigh Hart, Vernon Brooks “Trey” Hart, III, Lauren Doyle and Megan Barile; and one great-grandchild, Andrew Adley Stile.

A funeral mass will be held in Saint Gregory’s Catholic Church, 5345 Virginia Beach Blvd. at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 29, 2011 by Father Michael Gabler, OSB. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park in Virginia Beach. A viewing will be held at 10:00 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 Eight Avenue, 7 Floor, New York, New York 10001.

James Forbes

James W. Forbes, Sr., 67, of 110 Sunny Acres Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, October 24, 2011 at his home. Born in Pasquotank County, NC, he was the son of the late James E. and Laura Lacy Forbes and was the husband of Vonda Forbes of the home. Mr. Forbes served in the National Guard, attended the New Life Assembly of God, worked as an Iron worker, and was a member of the Ironworkers Union Local 79 in Norfolk, VA for forty-five years.

He is survived by his loving wife, Vonda F. Forbes, of the home; two daughters, Michele R. Forbes, and Susan B. Forbes, both of Chesapeake VA; three sons, James W. Forbes Jr., of Chesapeake, VA, Dwayne A. Forbes of Burlington, IA, and Justin W. Forbes of Elizabeth City, NC; four sisters, Peggy (Mike) Gay, of Elizabeth City, Janet (Melvin) Woods, of Chesapeake, Laura (James) Staley, of Kissimmee, FL, and Darla Forbes of Chesapeake; seventeen grandchildren; and fourteen great grandchildren.

A Navy veteran of World War II, “Mike” was a devoted husband to Velma, loving father to David and Daniel, doting “New One” to David Matthew, Stacey and Leah and a caring brother to Dart Wiler, Kate Pennekamp, Gene and Jay Stumph.

Romeo Malana

Romeo Hernandez Malana, 74, of 102 Creek Drive, Moyock, NC, died Sunday, October 23, 2011 at Sentara Leigh Memorial Hospital. He was born on July 14, 1937 in Cavity City, Philippines. Romeo was retired from the United States Navy and St. Brides Correctional Facility.

Mr. Malana is predeceased by his wife Barbara Ann Malana. Survivors include one daughter, Marissa Ringenbach of Winterville, NC; one son, Stephen Malana and wife Robin of Virginia Beach, VA; and three grandchildren, Peyden Ringenbach, Kelsey Malana, and Michael Malana.
