Martin Israelson

 

Martin Irvin Israelson, 71, of 105 Duke Street, Camden, NC died Sunday, January 29, 2012 at his home.  Born in Portland, ME, he was the son of the late Sydney and Mona Hecht Israelson.  Mr. Israelson was a veteran, having served in the United States Navy until retirement.  He later went to work for the Department of Defense and then the State of Virginia as a prison guard, retiring again from both.

Mr. Israelson is survived by three daughters, Tracey Cianfrano and husband Nicholas of Browns Mills, NJ, Sandra Creasy of Elizabeth City, NC and Mellissa Israelson and fiancé Randy Sparks of Richmond, VA; a sister, Anita Taylor and husband Ernest of Illinois; two brothers, Allen Israelson and wife Frances of Connecticut and Neil Israelson of Maine; four grandchildren, Bradley Creasy, Angeline Creasy, Daniel Creasy and Dylan Cianfrano; and a great-grandson, Caleb Lewis.

A memorial service will take place Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating and military honors being rendered by the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post 6060.  The family will receive friends following the service in the lobby of the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the SPCA of Northeastern North Carolina, P.O. Carlton White

Carlton White

Carlton L. White, 94, of Elizabeth City, NC died Sunday, January 29, 2012 at Albemarle Hospital.  Born in Pasquotank County, he was the son of the late Zenus Wesley White and Eva Bundy White and was the husband of the late Ruby Adams White.  Mr. White was a member of City Road United Methodist Church.  He was a veteran of the United States Army and had served in World War II where he was wounded in Normandy.  Mr. White was a founding partner with Alton Bright in 1955 of White & Bright Food Center and was active in the business until its closure in 2009.  He attended Daybreak in Elizabeth City, NC.

Mr. White is survived by two sons, Ernest Warren White and wife Debbie of Elizabeth City and Carlton Wesley White and wife Donna of Richmond, VA; five grandchildren, James Wesley White and wife Denise of Glen Allen, VA, Drs. Jeffrey Scott White and Natalie of Warsaw, VA, Karen White Wooten and husband Keith of Powhatan, VA, Robin White Burns and husband Eric of Apex, NC, and Adam C. White and wife Rachel of Elizabeth City; and six great-grandchildren, Noah Austin White and Joshua Tyler White of Warsaw, VA, Gavin Adam White and Collin Christopher White of Elizabeth City, NC; Reagan Grace Burns and Samuel Warren Burns of Apex, NC.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at City Road United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles McKenzie officiating.  Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.  The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of the church immediately following the service and at other times at the residence of the son, Warren White, 1012 Wareham Street, Elizabeth City, NC.  Memorial donations may be made to City Road United Methodist Church General Fund or Building Fund, P.O. Joseph Peffer

Joseph Edwin Peffer, 86 of 865 North 343, Camden, NC died Sunday, January 29, 2012 at the Albemarle Hospital.  Formerly of Waverly, VA, he was the son of the late James Wilson Peffer and Cora Lee Johnson Peffer and the widower of Mary Lorraine Duncan Peffer.  He was a carpenter and a painter.

 Mr. Peffer is survived by a daughter, Judith McPherson and husband Woodrow of Camden, NC; two sons, James Peffer and wife Mary of Virginia Beach, VA, and Lindsey Leroy Peffer of Colonial Heights, VA; a sister, Grace Sheffield of Waverly, VA; nine grandchildren; and twenty-three great grandchildren.

Sailigi McDonald

Sailigi Salanoa “Lini” McDonald, 68 of 818 Beech Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Saturday, January 28, 2012 at the Albemarle Hospital.  Mrs. McDonald, born in America Samoa, was the daughter of the late Pagota Taputu and Lotonu’u P. Taputu, and the wife of Carlton McDonald of the residence.  She was a spinner at the Elizabeth City Cotton Mills, an after school program teacher for the Elizabeth City/Pasquotank County School System and a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

 Besides her husband she is survived by a daughter, Andrea Stoner and husband Christopher of Elizabeth City, NC; a son Carlton C. McDonald of Hertford, NC; four sisters, Leiofu P. Taputu, Peka Mike, Fa’aoge V. Auvae and Lotonu’u L. Gene; two brothers, Fa’aolataga F. Salanoa and Samuelu L. Taputu; three grandchildren, Adrianne Blair McDonald, Kamryn Nichole Stoner and Nicholas Hayden Stoner.  She was pre-deceased by two sisters, Mataala M. Asiata and Viileeu T. Trefoil and three brothers, Mataala P. Taputu, Isaako P. Taputu and Fatu F. Taputu.

Francis Cummings

Francis Eugene Cummings, 81, of Grandy, NC died Friday, January 27, 2012. Born in Shallmar, MD he was the son of the late George R. Cummings and the late Carrie Warnick and was the husband of Jacqueline Connors Cummings of the residence. Mr. Cummings retired from the US Navy as Boatswain’s Mate, and was later employed with Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

Besides his wife, Mr. Cummings is survived by two daughters, two sons, a sister, a brother, and ten grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister.

Gene “Whitey” Newbern

Gene “Whitey” Newbern

Gene R. “Whitey” Newbern, 76, of Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday January 26, 2012. He was born in Portsmouth Virginia to the late Curtis and Mildred Newbern and was married to Earline S. Newbern of the home. Gene was a Marine who served his country in the Korean conflict, and worked as a fireman for the Craney Island Fire Department.

Including his wife, Mr. Newbern is survived by his sister Betty Gale Stephenson, brothers; Curtis Lee Newbern Jr., William Sumler Newbern, and Robert Alvin Newbern, and seven nieces and five nephews. He is preceded in death by his sister Carol Sue Woods, and his brother Marvin Russell Newbern.

A funeral service will take place Monday, January 30, 2012 at 2:30 p.m. at Twiford Funeral Home, 405 East Church st, Elizabeth City, NC, with the Rev. William Brake

The Rev. William Howard Brake, Jr., died at home in Duck on Saturday January 28, 2012.He was the son of W.H. Brake, Sr., and Minnie (Ross) Brake of Rocky Mount, NC. He was an Episcopal priest. He is survived by his wife, Jeannie Hudspeth Brake; his sister, Katherine May Pittman of Cary, NC; his children, Elizabeth Ellen Brake of Tempe, Arizona and Matthew Robert William Brake of Albuquerque, NM; and his step-children, Amy Burgess of Greenville, SC, Wade Roddy of Taylors, SC, Jim Roddy of Easley, SC, Don Roddy of Knoxville, TN, and Ken Roddy of Greer, SC.

The burial service and interment will be held at the historic Pohick Church in Lorton, VA. A memorial service will be held locally at in the chapel of St. Andrew’s By-The-Sea Episcopal Church in Nags Head on Tuesday, January 31, at 11:00 AM.

Edna Contratti

Edna Contratti

Edna Rae Contratti (nee Spruill) 78, beloved wife of Rudolph Anthony Contratti, daughter of the late Harry Spruill and the late Lela Spruill (nee Basnight), passed away at her residence in Southern Shores, NC on Thursday, January 26, 2012.  Born in Edenton, NC, she was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church of Kitty Hawk, an avid golfer, hospice volunteer, and loved birds and animals of all kind.  Mrs. Contratti has resided on the Outer Banks since 1992, having moved here from Vienna, VA.  She is preceded in death by her daughter, Jean Marie Contratti, her brother, Harry Spruill, and her sister, Marion Pierce.

In addition to her husband of 58 years, Rudolph, Mrs. Contratti is survived by her sons, Stephen and wife Ulrika of Germany, Rudy and wife Shara of California, three daughters, Carol and husband Charlie of New York, Angela, also of New York, Lora and husband Frank of Virginia, one brother, Louis Spruill, and three sisters, Alice Abbott, Judith Swope, and Charlene Resh, all of Virginia.  Also left to cherish her memory are her 9 grandchildren, Carlo, Tyler, Nicholas, Kylie, Frankie, Julia, Owen, Ian, and Aidan.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at Holy Redeemer by the Sea Catholic Church in Kitty Hawk with Rev. Al Russell officiating.  A Graveside Service & Interment of Cremated Remains will immediately follow the service.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made, in memory of Mrs. Edna Rae Contratti, to Dare County Home Health and Hospice, P. Henry Parker

Henry Parker

Henry Boyd Parker, Sr, 88 of Elizabeth City, NC died Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at Winslow Memorial Home after a short battle with cancer.  He was born January 29, 1923 in Hickory, VA to the late Caleb Bernard and Mattie Pritchard Parker and grew up in Manteo, NC.  He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carita Creef Parker and his brothers, Dallas P. Parker and Bernard H. Parker.

Henry was a veteran having served in World War II in the European Theatre, a retired Nationwide agent and a member of Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church.  He was a godly man who enjoyed fellowship with family and friends always giving a kind and encouraging word.

Surviving are his wife, Josephine Parker, son, Henry B. Parker, II and wife Barbara of Amherst, VA; daughter, Julia P. McPherson and husband Dane of Manteo, NC; sister, Mary P. McLendon of Elizabeth City; step-children, Gordon Cameron and wife Ellen, Philip Cameron and Kelly all of Elizabeth City, NC.  He was blessed with twelve grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Anne Trousdale

Anne Aydlett Trousdale, 65 of Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at Albemarle Hospital.  A native of Pasquotank County, she was the daughter of Dorothy Brock Aydlett and the late Julian E. Aydlett, Sr. and the wife of Raymond Wayne Trousdale.  She was a member of First United Methodist Church.  Anne lived in Lenoir, NC and worked for social services until her retirement in 1998.

Besides her husband and mother she is survived by three sisters, Clate Aydlett of Elizabeth City, NC, Dorothy Aydlett Weaver and husband Huey of Raleigh, NC, and Judy Aydlett Midkiff and husband Clint of Elizabeth City, NC;  and a brother, Julian E. Aydlett, Jr. and wife Dianne of Elizabeth City, NC.  The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff at Winslow Memorial Home and Carolina House for the care and kindness they showed Anne throughout her illness.

A memorial service will be Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Joseph Casteel officiating. Following the service the family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home.
