Joyce Lila Boldt, 79, of 290 S. Indiantown Road, Shawboro, NC, passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at Chesapeake General Hospital.  Born in Spicer, MN, she was the daughter of the late Rueben Baklund and Lillian Evenson Serie and was the wife of the late Louis Raymond Boldt.  Mrs. Boldt was a member of the Lutheran Church while living in Crosslake, MN and had attended Forest Park Church in Elizabeth City, NC.

 She is survived by a son, Lyle W. Boldt and wife Linda of Shawboro, NC; three grandchildren, Lyle R. Boldt and wife Kelly of Virginia Beach, VA, Sandra Williams and husband Vance of Virginia Beach, VA, and Francis Boldt and wife Arina of South Mills, NC; eight great-grandchildren, Casey, Sierra, Chloe, Isaiah, Evan, Meagan, Breanna and Chrissy; two great-great-grandchildren, Elijah and Riley; a sister, Rudella Burgeson; and two brothers, Gordon Baklund and Dennis Baklund and wife Paisley, all of Minnesota. The family wishes to extend special thanks to her loving and faithful caregivers.

Orville Youmans

Orville Youmans

Orville Layton Youmans, Sr., 80 of 102 Cherry Drive, Moyock, NC died Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at his residence.  A native of Burton, SC, he was the son of the late Robert Purnell Youmans and Dollie Mae Bennett Youmans and the husband of Clara Elaine Aukland Youmans of the residence.  He served in the SC National Guard for four years and was a retired Chief Signalman with twenty-two years in the U.S. Navy, a member of Pilmoor United Methodist Church, the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post 6060, the American Legion, and the Fleet Reserve.

Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Cynthia A. Youmans of Barco; two sons, Orville “Sonny” Youmans, Jr. and wife Cindy, of Barco, NC and Brian Youmans of Moyock, NC; a sister, Sara Alice Schauffort of Reading, PA; two brothers, James Youmans and Robert Youmans both of Summerville, SC; and a grandson, William Kevin Youmans of Barco.

A funeral service will be Friday, January 27, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Randy Blanchard officiating and the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post 6060 will render military Honors. Lottie Evans Roberts, 70, of 1130 Commissary Road, Elizabeth City, NC died Monday, January 23, 2012 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.  Born in Elizabeth City, NC, she was the daughter of Sarah Evans Spruill of Elizabeth City, NC and the late Arvin Sawyer and was the wife of Charles Frederick Roberts of the residence.  Mrs. Roberts was a homemaker and was the member of Providence Baptist Church.

Along with her mother and her husband of fifty-two years, Mrs. Roberts is survived by two sons, Roy Roberts and wife Angel of Chesapeake, VA, and David Roberts of Elizabeth City, NC; five grandchildren, Andrew Roberts and wife Daphne of Virginia Beach, VA, Samantha R. Jenkins and husband Chris of Virginia Beach, VA, Melissa R. Colangelo and husband Tony of Chesapeake, VA, David Roberts, II and Michael Roberts, both of Elizabeth City, NC; and two great-grandchildren, Alexander Roberts and Wesley Jenkins.

A funeral service will be held Friday, January 27, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Barbara Hirsch

Manteo, NC

Barbara Decker Hirsch passed away on  January  23, 2012 in Newport News, Va. surrounded by her family.  Mrs. Hirsch battled diabetes for many years with grace and dignity.  She was born in West Orange, NJ on March 17, 1940 to Gerard and Evelyn Decker.  Mrs. Hirsch worked as a secretary for Chubb and Sons prior to her marriage.  She was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Wanchese, NC.

She was preceeded in death by a brother, Ronald Decker of Arizona.  She is survived by her husband of fifty years, Harvey A. Hirsch, Jr. He was her constant companion and caregiver for all the years of her illness and took care of her with much love, often saying “she is my hero”.  She is also survived by two daughters, Nancy Brown of Manteo, NC and Linda Drake and husband Neil of Newsoms, VA.  She was a loving and doting grandmother to Emily, Grayson, William and Emma.  They were her pride and joy and will long serve as an example of faith and endurance.  She was also loved by a host of family and friends.

A service will be held at Bethany United Methodist Church on Thursday January, 26 at 3:00 pm followed by burial at Manteo Cemetery.  A reception will follow at their home at 112 Puddle Lane in Manteo.

Sue Gaskins

Susan “Sue” Virginia Brice Gaskins, age 100, died January 23, 2012 at her home in Coinjock, NC.  Born Nov. 11, 1911 in Powells Point, NC, she was the daughter of the late George F. & Lebarcia Morse Brice.  Mrs. Gaskins was a member of Disciples of Christ Church of Jarvisburg, NC and was known and loved throughout the community for her blueberry patch where she enjoyed many happy hours with friends from far and near. She was also admired for her handmade dolls and other crafts.

Survived by one daughter, Lois Meekins of Coinjock NC; 8 grandchildren, Jeanne Meekins Murray, Cathy Meekins Forbes and Iris Meekins all of Coinjock, NC, Dana Meekins Carter and Jackie Meekins of Farmville VA, Joseph Johnson of Bath NC, Melba Johnson and Oliver Kent Johnson of Columbia NC; 17 great grandchildren and 18 great-great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Joseph Johnson and second husband, Frank Gaskins; sons George Thomas Johnson & Joseph A. Johnson; brothers, Willis, John, George and Daniel Brice, sisters, Julia Brice Curles, Sadie Brice O’Neal, Lovie Brice Beals and Rosa Brice Lipinsky; by son-in-law Preston Meekins, grandsons, Wayde Preston Meekins and George Thomas Johnson. Jr.; one great grandchild and one great-great grandchild.

Graveside service will be conducted Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in the Hampton Cemetery, Waterlily, NC by the Rev. George F. Thomas Burns, Jr.

Thomas Burns, Jr., 85, of 301 Lane Drive, Elizabeth City, NC died Saturday, January 21, 2012 at Sentara Norfolk General Heart Hospital.  Born in Fall River, MA, he was the son of the late Thomas Burns, II and Alyce Savard Burns Webster and was the husband of Hilda Perry Burns of the home.  Mr. Burns was a veteran of WWII, having served in the United States Marine Corps and of the Korean conflict during which he served in the United States Air Force.  Following his service time, Mr. Burns attended the University of Massachusetts and received a Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering.  He went to work for the Federal Aviation Administration and retired as an engineer in 1979.  Mr. and Mrs. Burns then moved to Elizabeth City where he served on the Soil and Water Conservation Board of Pasquotank County and eventually became the President of the North Carolina Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts.  Mr. Burns was an accomplished author and poet who has three published books.  He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church since 1979 and a Sunday School teacher for over fifty years.

 In addition to his wife of sixty years, Mr. Burns is survived by a daughter, Debbie-Beth Mutzabaugh and husband Gary of Suffolk, VA; two granddaughters, Traci Smith and husband Steve and Kelly Williams and husband Ricky, all of Chesapeake, VA; and a great-granddaughter, Evelyn Smith.

 A funeral service will be held Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Twiford Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Linda Lee Carolan

Linda Lee Carolan (nee Grosse) 65, beloved wife of James “Jim” Michael Carolan, daughter of the late Gustav “George” Grosse and the late Mary Grosse (nee Hocker), passed away at her residence in Frisco, NC on Saturday, January 21, 2012.  Born in Bay Shore, New York, she has resided on the Outer Banks for the past 33 years, serving as Office Manager for the family business, Bay Shore Construction.  She was also a faithful member of Cape Hatteras Baptist Church where she served as Treasurer.  She will be remembered as a friend to all who met her, always visiting the sick and offering words of encouragement. 

In addition to her husband of 39 years, Jim, she is survived by her daughters, Kathleen of Hatteras, Mary of Frisco, her son, Michael, and her daughter-in-law Jackie, also of Frisco.  Also surviving are her two sisters, Elizabeth Dee Jensen of Frisco, NC, Kathy Benton, and many friends.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at Cape Hatteras Baptist Church in Frisco with Pastor Russ Howard officiating.  In accordance with her wishes, Mrs. Carolan will be cremated. Tommy Griffin, 82, of 186 West Highway 158, Camden, NC, died Friday, January 20, 2012.  Born in Perquimans County, NC, he was the son of the late Max Russell and Glennie Gregory Griffin and was the husband of the late Donna Burgess Griffin.  Mr. Griffin was a member of Widow’s Son Lodge #75 AF&AM and the Sudan Shriners.  He was the owner/operator of Sealtest Milk Distributorship for over thirty-five years.  Upon retirement, the business was sold to Pet Milk and Mr. Griffin returned to work for ten years prior to retiring again as Branch Supervisor.

Survivors include two daughters, Vanita Seymour and husband Si of New Bern, NC, and Paula Gregory Rogerson and husband Glenn of Tyner, NC; a son, Brian Griffin and wife Terri of Camden, NC; five grandchildren, Mark Seymour and wife Cindy, Todd Seymour and wife Lauren, Adam Gregory and wife Bethany, Drew Gregory, and Leslie Griffin; one great-grandchild, Ryles Gregory; a brother-in-law, Ben Smith; and two nieces, Brenda Umphlett and Betty Ruth Miller.  In addition to his parents and his wife, Mr. Griffin was preceded in death by his sister, Maxine Smith.

Karen Sipila Barrington, 62, of Manteo, died Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at her residence.  Karen was born in Teaneck, NJ and worked in Civil Service for 25 years as an Educational Specialist and chief of the customer assistance team at Fort Eustis, VA.  She was the daughter of the late Robert Arthur Sipila and Lorraine Seluga Sipila.

Karen enjoyed hunting and fishing with her husband and spent many weekends aboard the Sea Hunter as his first mate.  Gardening and ocean walks with Cassie and Widgeon were among the other favorite activities. She also enjoyed snow skiing and volley ball. Family and friends will always remember the dinners and social events that Karen hosted with her husband.

Karen is survived by her husband, Gilbert Vernon Barrington of the residence; a daughter, Angie Hooper and husband, Sean of Manteo, two sons, Jason Todd and wife, Sarah of Blacksburg, VA and Phillip Spat and wife, Sarah of Kill Devil Hills; a sister, Janet Sipila of Arizona; two brothers, Bobby Sipila and wife, Stacey and their daughter, Ruby Jean of New Jersey, and Gary Sipila and wife, Jennifer of New Jersey; and three grandchildren, Jeni Leigh Hooper, Phillip Tuck and Aleia Barrington.

A memorial service will be held at Roanoke Island Presbyterian Church on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 11:00 am with Rev. Tom Murphy and Rev. Debra Quidley Creef, 58, of Manns Harbor, died Thursday, January 19, 2012 in Nags Head.  Mrs. Creef lived all her life in Dare County and was a homemaker.  She was a member of Manteo Baptist Church and attended Mount Carmel United Methodist Church. Debbie loved her family and was a “Family Fan” of all activities they were involved in.

She was the daughter of the late Charlie Dorian and Marion Everett Quidley and the wife of Bruce Creef of the home.

Besides her husband surviving are two daughters, Melanie C. Mahler and husband, Ryan of Manteo, and Megan C. Dickerson of Manns Harbor; three sons, Michael Creef and wife, Jennifer of Greensboro, NC,  Joshua Creef of Manns Harbor and girlfriend, Mandy and Joel Creef of Manns Harbor and girlfriend, Madison; two brothers, Alan Old of Scotland and C.D. Quidley of Manteo; grandchildren, Bailey Dickerson, Natalie Mahler, Rylie Mahler, Cora Creef, Hazel Creef, Tucker Stetson and Madie Stetson; family members, Rocky Creef and wife Gail, Wendy Parks and husband, Mike, Greg Creef and wife, Anna, and Rhonda Creef.  Debra is also survived by her Father In-Law Warren Creef of Manns Harbor and numerous nieces and nephews and “Special Friend” Roxanne Jackson.

Besides her parents Debbie was predeceased by three infant children and her mother in law Edna Creef.

A celebration of life will be held at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church, Sunday January 22, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. by Rev. Bettie Francis, Rev. Ken Simpson and Rev. Jerald Craddock.  Burial will be in Mount Carmel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
