Archy Archibald

Archy Archibald

Elmer Vernon “Archy” Archibald, Sr. passed away on June 27, 2013 at the age of 90. Archy was born in Contoocook, New Hampshire, one of three children of Stewart and Bertha Archibald.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served as an airplane mechanic in the Ninth Photographic Division of the United States Army, primarily in southeast Asia.

Archy was married twice, first to Mildred Fisher, with whom he had three children: Vicky, Betty and Evan; and later to Doris Powell, with whom he had two sons: Elmer and Joseph.

Archy met Doris during the 1950’s when he was a rally car race driver in Maryland.   Archy and Doris moved their family to Southern Shores, North Carolina in the late 1970’s, although Archy commuted daily to Chesapeake, Virginia, where he worked as a foreman for Volvo. After retiring from Volvo, Archy served as a patrolman for the Southern Shores Police Force and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. Later, he worked at the Kitty Hawk Walmart.

Archy loved cars and racing, and surf fishing and RV camping along the North Carolina Outer Banks and the Gulf Coast.

He suffered from dementia during the last years of his life, which he spent at the Carolina House of Elizabeth City under the exceptional care of the staff there.  He is survived by two daughters, Vicky Koonce and husband Pete of New Bern, NC, and Betty Vose and husband Joe of Mechanicsville, MD; two sons, Evan Archibald of New Bern, NC and Joseph Archibald and wife, Cindy Burda of Baltimore, MD; 10 grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. In addition to his second wife and parents, he is predeceased by a son, Elmer Vernon Archibald, Jr.

No services are planned at this time.  Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City is assisting the Archibald family.  Online memorial condolences may be sent to the family at
