Athene Poulos Meads, 89, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2017 in Elizabeth City, NC. She was born October 23, 1927 in Elizabeth City to the late Margaret Anna Koch and Nicholas (Nick) Harry Poulos. Athene was a lifelong resident of Elizabeth City, and graduated in 1945 from Elizabeth City High School. She was a clerk at W. T. Grant Company, a homemaker, a cashier and co-owner of The Colonial Restaurant. She was a lifelong member of Cann Memorial Presbyterian Church and was the treasurer of the women of the church for over 50 years, and in 2007 became an Honorary Life Member of Presbyterian Women of the Presbyterian Church.
Athene was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She loved to travel and always had a suitcase ready for the next trip. She loved to cook, sew, and quilt. She became an avid quilter making numerous quilts for grandchildren, nieces, nephews and charities.
Her husband, Adrian Meads, predeceased her. She is survived by her son, Neal A. Meads and wife Jenny, and granddaughters, Alexandra and Elizabeth Meads of Clayton, NC; and son, Alexis A. Meads of Alexandria, VA, along with numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her brother, Chris Poulos of Elizabeth City. She was preceded in death by her sister, Angela Bridges and brothers, Nicholas, Bobby and Richard Poulos.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 13, 2017, at Twiford Memorial Chapel with Rev. Elizabeth Cluff officiating. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and immediately following the service on Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Cann Memorial Presbyterian, 311 West Main Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909 or to the charity of one’s choice.
