Harold Clayton

Harold Lee Clayton, 82, passed away Thursday, April 15, 2010 at Albemarle Hospital. Born in Kernersville, NC he was the son of the late John Nelson Clayton and the late Ruth Huneycutt Clayton. He was retired from the textile industry having been involved in the management of several textile companies. He was a member of Kitty Hawk United Methodist and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict having proudly served in the U.S. Navy.

Mr. Clayton is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Wilson Clayton; two daughters, Juanita Clayton of Thomasville, NC and Ann Clayton Nance and husband David of Edenton, NC; two sons, Mike Clayton and wife Joanna of Huntersville, NC and Steve Clayton and wife Teresa of Rustburg, VA; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 18, 2010 at 3:00 PM at Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church with the Rev. Curtis Campbell officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 900, Kitty Hawk, NC 27949.

Carlice Williams

Carlice Edward Williams, 83, of 208 Meekins Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Wednesday, April 14, 2010 in Albemarle Hospital. Born in Pasquotank County, NC, he was the son of the late Newton Eddie and Addie Key Williams and was the husband of Rosa Donalds Williams of the residence for nearly sixty years. Mr. Williams was a fifty year member of Eureka Lodge 317 AF & AM and a forty year member of Riverside United Methodist Church. He had been a veteran, having served in the United States Army during World War II and the Korean War.

Along with his wife, Mr. Williams is survived by a daughter, Cheryl Lynn Cocran and husband Tim of Virginia Beach, VA and their daughter, Lauren; a son, Robert Wayne Williams and wife Sandra of Boilingsprings, SC and their son, Spencer; sisters, Marie Stallings, Agnes Ivey, and Ann Roughton; and a brother, Charlie Durwood Williams, all of Elizabeth City, NC. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Gaither Williams and Lloyd Williams.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Rev. Shawn Blackwelder officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Nola Teachey

Nola Mae Teachey, 78, of 558 Highway 343, Camden, NC, died Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC, to the late Dempsey Gilbert and Mina Rosetta Irelan Gilbert and was the widow of James D. Teachey, Jr. Mrs. Teachey worked for Hardee’s in Elizabeth City for over 40 years and was a Baptist.

Survivors include a daughter, Caroline Newby of New Hope, NC; two sons, James D. Teachey, III and Dempsey Teachey both of Camden, NC; a sister, Jean Smith of Winton, NC; a brother, Grover Crawford of Wedgefield, SC; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Besides her husband and parents, Mrs. Teachey was predeceased by a son, William Teachey and two grandchildren, Robert Teachey and Frankie Newby.

A funeral service will be held Friday, April 16, 2010 at 11:00 am at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating. Burial will be in the Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends following the service in the lobby of the funeral home. Donald Chappell

Donald Chappell

Donald Lamine Chappell, 81, passed away at his Spring Arbor residence in Kill Devil Hills on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 surrounded by loved ones. Born in Pottsgrove, PA to the late Alton and Ida Keefer, an only child, he was raised on a farm in the mountains during the Great Depression. Mr. Chappell proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy, where he spent 27 years and enjoyed the opportunity to travel the world to such beautiful places as Coco Solo, Panama, and Puerto Rico. He was awarded many Service Metals from World Ward II to Viet Nam. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, American Legion and was a 32nd Degree Mason and Royal Ark Mason.

Mr. Chappell loved to fish and was always on the go. He enjoyed getting to know people and sharing life stories with everyone he met. He had a kind and gentle spirit and will be missed greatly by his family and everyone that knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife of over 59 years, Constance Ann Chappell, two children; Robert J. Chappell of Berlin, NJ, Leslie A. Kappes of Kill Devil Hills, and three grandchildren, Gage, Jesse, and Kaleb.

A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 pm, Sunday, April 18, 2010 in the Sunroom at Spring Arbor Assisted Living of Kill Devil Hills with Pastor Steve Siegrist officiating.

Durward Lee Whitehead, Sr. 48, 421 Sexton Road, Elizabeth City, NC died Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at Maryview Hospital. Mr. Whitehead, a native of Pasquotank County, was the son of the late Robert Wood Whitehead, Sr. and Helen Ballance Whitehead and the husband of Barbara Whitehead of the residence. He was a diesel mechanic for Frank T. Williams Farm.

Besides his wife he is survived by three daughters, Carrie Whitehead of Elizabeth City, NC, Jessica Davenport and husband Jeremy of Hertford, NC, Rachel Whitehead of Chesapeake, VA; a son, Durward Lee Whitehead, Jr and wife Georgina of Cambridge, England; a step-daughter Kimberlee D’Amato of Saraland, AL; two sisters, Carol England and Beth Barclift both of Elizabeth City, NC; a brother Robert W. Whitehead, Jr. of Elizabeth City, NC; five grandchildren, Arianna Martin, Breanna Marshall, Sophia Marshall, Marshall Davenport and A. J. D’Amato.

A graveside funeral service will be Monday, April 19, 2010 at 2:00 PM at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Walter Johnston officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7:00 to 8:30 PM Sunday and at other times at the residence of his brother, Robert Whitehead, 1354 Lynch’s Corner Road, Elizabeth City, NC. Harry Zahn

Harry Frederick Zahn III, 77, passed away at his residence in Manteo on Tuesday, April 13, 2010. Born in West Point, Virginia, he was the son of the late Harry F. Zahn, Jr. and the late Thelma Tuck Zahn. He is survived by his wife, Dalene Akers Zahn of the residence. Mr. Zahn worked at the Nags Head Pier and enjoyed fishing. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force and retired as a Lt. Colonel. He was a member of James River Baptist Church in Williamsburg, VA and will be deeply missed by all.

In addition to his wife, surviving are his children, Fred Zahn and wife Carrie of Raleigh, NC, Christine Grana and husband Pete of Toccoa, GA, David Zahn, also of Raleigh, NC, and 4 grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, James Zahn of Williamsburg, VA.

A Funeral will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, April 17, 2010 at Manteo Baptist Church with the Rev. Ken Simpson officiating. A Visitation will be held at Twiford Funeral Home in Manteo from 7:00 – 8:30 pm, Friday, April 16th. Barbara Marie Chambers Taylor, 39, of 1401 Walker Avenue, Apt. 303, Elizabeth City, NC died Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at Chowan Hospital. She was the daughter of the late John Wilson Chambers III and Sharon Ann Harrell Chambers and the wife of W.P. “Scotty” Taylor of the residence. She was a homemaker.

Besides her husband, she is survived by son, Jonathan Morse of Elizabeth City, NC; a stepson, Aron Baker of Camden, NC; two sisters, Denise Smith of Hertford, NC and Myra Keith of Norfolk, VA; a brother, John Chambers of Helena, MT; and father-in-law, WP Taylor, Jr. and wife Dianna of Oakland, TN. She was pre-deceased by a mother-in-law, Charlene Taylor.

Virginia Ness

Virginia Lee (Moore) Ness 7/21/23 – 4/13/10

Virginia, affectionately known by family and friends as Ginny, passed away peacefully at home with the ‘love of her life’ and husband of nearly 60 years, Charles A. Ness, Jr., by her side.

Ginny was an army nurse, a veteran of WWII. She worked for the Veterans Administration Hospital as a surgical nurse where she met Charlie, then a patient. After their marriage, Virginia worked as a private duty nurse, a rehab nurse at Hiram G. Andrews Rehab Center and a Public Health Nurse. Upon retirement, Virginia and Charles moved to NC and opened Aunt Mary’s Kitchen, a gourmet dessert bakery in Kitty Hawk, and published the ‘Long Awaited Aunt Mary’s Dessert Cookbook’ with her daughter, Marypat. Ginny has customers from all over the US that still remember her and her desserts fondly.

Virginia is survived and greatly missed by her children: James Patrick Ness and wife Pamela, Marypat (Ness) Schlee and husband Ron, Michael Kevin Ness and wife Linda, William David Ness and wife Donna; grandchildren: Robin Leah, Heather Marie, Jacquelyn Marie, Mathias David, Joshua James, Amber Liberty, Dara Bea, Jaime Marie, Josiah Mark-Levi, and Taylor Nicole; and great grandchildren: Aden Eugene, Katelyn Rose, Corbin James, Anikah Keiley and Tobin Lee.

The family would like to thank the staff of the OBX Hospital, Hospice and Pastor Tony Facenda of Still Waters Independent Baptist Church for their kindness.

Forest Warren

Forest Warren

Forest Warren, died April 11, 2010 in his residence of ALS. Mr. Warren was born in Triangle Virginia. Forest came to the Outer Banks in 2001 and began the “Concert chorale of the Outer Banks” and performed “Messiah” as well as other concerts, including”Amahl” and “The Night Visitors” in two consecutive years. As a result, the two boys who sang “Amahl”, Joshua Ross and Daniel DeVeau were admitted to the Saint Thomas Choir School in New York City, and will graduate this June, bringing Forest great joy.

The Girls Treble Choir was established, and a music conference brings them to St. Thomas for one week in the summer.

Training children’s voices was his first love, but Forest also needed church music to embrace his spiritual journey. He was a minister of music at the Colington United Methodist Church for nine years.

Forest was the husband of Marilyn Meyer of the home and also was survived by his sister, Linda Warren of Bakersfield, CA and his aunt, Virginia Havasy.

A service of remembrance will be in Colington United Methodist Church, Saturday April 17, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. with a reception in the Villa Dunes Club house in Nags Head following the service. Dorothy Sawyer

Dorothy Williams Sawyer, 89, of 1609 Caddy Drive, Elizabeth City, NC died Sunday, April 11, 2010 in the Chesapeake General Hospital. She was born in Camden County, NC on March 12, 1921 to the late Gaston Thomas Williams, Sr. and Cloah Forehand Williams. Mrs. Sawyer was the widow of the late C. L. Sawyer. She and her husband were co-founders of Sawyer’s House of Furniture in 1952 and she retired in 1978. Mrs. Sawyer was a member of Berea Baptist Church, Fleet Reserve Auxiliary and was a volunteer for the Albemarle Hospital.

She is survived by one son, Lary Sawyer and wife, Joyce, of Southern Shores, NC; two sisters, Sarah Roberts of Shawboro, NC and Marguerite Rice of Milton, FL. and a brother, Gaston Thomas (G.T.) Williams, Jr. of Camden, NC. Also, surviving are three grandchildren, Eric Sawyer and wife, Lauryn, of Greenville, NC, Jan Jones and husband, Brandon, of Raleigh, NC and Jill Stowe and husband, Todd of Smithfield, NC; four great grandchildren, Jason Stowe, Skylar Stowe, Tanner Stowe and Brock Jones.

Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at 11:00am in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery by Rev. F. Joe Griffith. The family will receive friends and relatives Tuesday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 at the funeral home and at other times at the residence, 1609 Caddy Drive, Elizabeth City, NC.
