Balarama Daniel Ackley

Balarama Daniel Ackley

Kitty Hawk, NC

Balarama Daniel Ackley, 31, of Kitty Hawk, died unexpectedly in the early morning hours on December 24, 2011 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born in Hershey, PA on July 10, 1980, he was the beloved son of Dr. B.L. and Sallie Ackley of Kitty Hawk. He had been a sport and commercial fisherman, residing in San Pedro, CA.

Balarama Daniel grew up on the Outer Banks and loved all outdoor activities, especially if it involved the ocean; surfing, body boarding, and mostly fishing. He moved to Steamboat Springs, CO and Lake Tahoe to pursue his his love of snowboarding and eventually then on to the west coast of California to pursue his love of fishing and to expand his career.

On November 14, 2010, while working aboard the EMERALD SEA, (a commercial squid seine boat), he suffered a near fatal Traumatic Brain Injury. After an 8 week recovery and rehabilitation at St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach, CA he returned to live with his parents in Kitty Hawk for further recovery and rehabilitation in January 2011.

He is survived by his parents, Dr. B.L. and Sallie Ackley of Kitty Hawk, his brother Narayana Lee Ackley and Miroslava Hatalova of Brooklyn, NY; an aunt; Peggy West of Corolla, an aunt; Jennifer Spruill and husband, Charles T. Spruill of Nags Head; paternal grandparent, William P. Jackson of Spring Arbor, Kill Devil Hills, a maternal uncle, Richard  Walker Taylor of Georgia; cousins including Beth and Chuck Crawley of Southern Shores and James and Ginna West of Raleigh, and many second cousins in North Carolina and Maryland.

He was a wonderful human being, who loved life, nature, was kind to everyone he met, and will be missed by all. His death came as a great shock to the Outer Banks Community where he was well known and loved.

A Memorial Service will be held on January 8th at 2pm at St. Andrews by the Sea in Nags Head, NC, with Father Glick officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family and staff of Heron Pond Montessori School would like to construct a Medicine Wheel Garden on the Poor Ridge Road campus in memory of Balarama. If you wish to participate in this project, donations may be made to HPMS and state in the memo line “for Balarama’s Garden.”

Twiford Funeral Home, Manteo, NC is assisting the family with arrangements.

I am so very sorry for the loss of your son. I cannot even imagine the pain you are going through at this moment. Please know that although I wasn’t able to attend the memorial service yesterday due to having the flu, that your family is in my thoughts and especially prayers. Daniel, during his childhood, was almost part of my family. I remember how he would ask to stay for dinner at my home when he knew that I was preparing London Broil! All of my children, Dante, Melanie, and Doug will miss him. If my late husband, Paul were still alive, he would surely miss him as well. Please try to stay strong, you will come through this.
