Bruce Edward Green, 83, of Southern Shores, NC, died Tuesday, June 25, 2013. Bruce was born in Royal Oak, Michigan, to the late Richard Fredrick Green and Hazel Maude Green. Bruce graduated from Wayne State University, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Education. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, TX, receiving a Master of Arts in Economics. He subsequently attended the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in Arlington, VA and was also a graduate of The Executive Program at the University of Virginia.
Bruce had a 29 year military career, serving in the United States Army, and was a Vietnam veteran. He retired as a Colonel. Bruce earned many awards in the service, including the Army Commendation Medal, the Bronze Star, the French Medaille de Bronze, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Legion of Merit. In his post-Army career, he worked for the National Security Industrial Association before retiring in 1997.
Bruce was very active in many civic groups. He was the Past President of the Military Officer Association of America First Flight Chapter, the Chickahawk Property Owner’s Association and the Wayne State University Alumni Association. He was also a Chairman of the Duck United Methodist Men’s group.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lois Hammann Green; his daughter, Karen LaFave, of Springfield, VA; his sons, Bruce (Susan) Edward Green, Jr., of Chesapeake, VA, Richard Hammann Green, of Chattanooga, TN; sister, Lois Bro, of Greenville, SC; his grandchildren, Blair, Joshua, Erin, Janet, Richard, Steven, and great grandchildren, Kierstin, Garrett, and Hugo. He is predeceased by his parents, his brother, Richard Frederick Green, Jr., and his great granddaughter, Lilliana.
A visitation will be held on Monday, July 1, from 6:30 – 8:30 PM, at Twiford Funeral Home, 500 Budleigh Street, Manteo, NC. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 2 at 9:30 AM at Duck United Methodist Church located at 1214 Duck Road, Duck, NC 27949, with Pastor John Tyson officiating. Bruce will be buried at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Duck United Methodist Church.
