On May 13, 2012, Elizabeth S. (Libby) Greene of Elizabeth City passed away at Carolina House where she was attended lovingly by God, family, and friends. She was born in Princeton, West Virginia, on March 3, 1930, to Harold G. and Ida Clarke (Robertson) Stafford, their prized only child. Libby was a bright and witty woman who on June 25, 1948, married fellow Concord College student and most eligible young bachelor about town, WWII battlefield commissioned Lieutenant Vernon E. Greene. She excelled in her studies with a double major in English and French and years later earned a Masters in Public Administration.

Through the Army years they traveled extensively and grew a family along the way, moving often to various posts and then to Belgium. Given Libby’s personality and her particular affinity for cats, believed blessed with multiple renewed opportunities, she embraced freshness in life. Libby taught English to Puerto Rican school children before ESL existed, hosted with flair and fun many “career forming” parties and functions as an Army Wife, taught high school English and Latin, inviting her students into her home, coached an international swim team of children as though her own, played tennis with the best in class, picked up and lived for six months in Greece. Libby loved to hike the trails of Acadia National Park with friends and family, swim, scuba dive, bowl, run in races, and play any card game, especially Bridge, and she loved fuzzy live and stuffed animals, chocolate, opera, and Elvis, not necessarily in that order. Libby tried her hand at Famous Writers courses and enjoyed composing many a letter to the editor and some wild short stories, was a voracious reader who relished her wolf pack book club meetings, enjoyed talking current events and politics, and was a master at crosswords, a grandson endearingly remarking that asking her for help on them was cheating, like looking up something on the Internet. Libby was an avid sports fan, the Celtics and Patriots especially beloved.

Libby always said that wherever she lived, her first actions were to find church, library, and gym, and she volunteered at church and hospital, visited and ministered to the sick, including the wounded and their families at Valley Forge, Walter Reed, the VA, and participated in community activities. She loved her Wednesday Morning Bible Study and Adult Sunday School and always from early childhood knew Jesus loves her. Most of all Libby valued being a mother and grandmother, participating in and orchestrating many activities while raising her five children, from taking them everywhere she went to ensuring that there was always plenty to see, do, read, learn…from driver to dance lessons to model “swim mom” to Cub Scout den mother to perpetual cheerleader to living hope and faith and love and beyond. Libby practiced what she often said: “My children are most precious to me.” Libby has made and maintained loving friendships all over the world, and she will be missed and never forgotten. Our loss is heaven’s gain.

Libby is survived by her daughters: Laurel J. Greene, Valparaiso, IN; Sharon L. Greene, Elizabeth City, NC; Yolanda (Les) Craft, LaPorte, IN; and Carmen L. Greene, Bar Harbor, ME; one son: COL (USAR) Vernon E. Greene, Jr., Winchester, KY; and two grandsons: D. Joseph Ferrari and Brendan A. Ferrari, both of Chicago, IL. Libby is preceded in death by her parents and her husband. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at 2:00 p.m., with a reception to follow at the Parish House. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to Wounded Warrior Project (PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675 or woundedwarriorproject.org), Christ Episcopal Church Building Fund (200 S McMorrine St., EC, NC 27909), SPCA of Northeastern NC (100 Wilson St., EC, NC 27909).

We express thanks to staff at Guardian Care and Carolina House, to ER and other staff at Albemarle Hospital, to Dr. Brandon Peters and Sally Crutchley, R.N., Dr. Mark Knable, mostly recently Albemarle Home Care/Hospice, and others who cared for our Libby with love and skill and supported us these past years.

I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith. II Timothy 4:7

On May 11, 2012, Julia Wiley Roebuck left this life for Heaven, the place that has no Parkinson’s Disease, no pineal gland tumors, no broken bones and no arthritis – only perfect health in the presence of Jesus her Savior forever.

Julia Ann Wiley was born on January 6, 1926 in Stony Creek, VA to Joseph Milton Wiley and Mary Anna Powell Wiley. Her family moved to Vanceboro, NC where she grew up and graduated from high school in 1942 with perfect attendance from first grade through her senior year. Her classmates at Farm Life High voted her “prettiest in the class,” a trait that remained with her throughout her life. She never left her house without makeup and perfect hair.

At 16, Mrs. Roebuck attended East Carolina College majoring in business. On May 28, 1944 she married Kelly Ferrell Bryan in a civil ceremony in Elizabeth City, NC. The couple had four children: Mary Jo Bryan Cannon (Nelson) of Winston-Salem, NC, Ann Carole Bryan Bagley (Sam) of Winterville, NC, Kelly Ferrell Bryan, Jr. (Marty) of Stone Mountain, GA and Randy Musial Bryan (Jane) of Vanceboro, NC. The month before her 33rd birthday, Kelly was killed in an automobile accident on December 7, 1958. Shortly thereafter, she attended Hardbarger Business College in Kinston, earning two degrees. She began her career at Armstrong Wholesale Grocers in New Bern and later worked for Home Security Life Insurance Company in Kinston.

On June 16, 1963, she married Haywood Roebuck at Faith Lutheran Church in Kinston. The couple moved to Elizabeth City in 1964. There she realized her career goals at Albemarle Production Credit Association (now AgFirst), retiring on February 28, 1986. On November 17, 1993, she began volunteering at Albemarle Hospital and spent the next 18 years training other volunteers and manning the front desk. She was a member of Southgate Striders, a walking group at the mall.

Mrs. Roebuck gave her life to the Lord in 1959. She served Him the rest of her life. She loved gardening, canning and freezing. She made quilts for all her children and grandchildren. She particularly liked to entertain friends from her church. She was well-known for her chocolate fudge, seafoam candy and chocolate pies as well as delicious vegetables.

Mrs. Roebuck was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Joseph Wiley, Jr. and John Powell Wiley; her sister, Pauline Wiley Moore; and her husbands. She is survived by her four children, twelve grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Peggy Colie of LaGrange and Erma Wiley of Greensboro; brothers-in-law Shirley and F.B. Bryan of Vanceboro, as well as a host of nieces and nephews; special cousin, Luby Wiley; special neighbors, Chubby and Imogene Tatum; and dear friend, Joyce Barclift, all of Elizabeth City.

A funeral service will take place Monday, May 14, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Eric Moore officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday from 1:00 p.m. until the service time at the funeral home, and also immediately following the committal service at her residence, 1602 Caddy Drive, Elizabeth City. Flowers are accepted, or contributions to the Julia Roebuck Memorial Fund may be mailed to Resurrection Lutheran Church, 916 Centerville Turnpike North, Chesapeake, VA 23320-3020. Twiford Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC is assisting the Roebuck family. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.twifordfh.com.
