Claud A. Midgett

Claud A. Midgett

Claud A. Midgett, 76, began his eternal patrol, on Tuesday, November 26, 2013.  Claud was the second son of George and Beatrice Midgett.  A child of humble beginnings, Claud’s best memories were of summer walks on the beach before there were tourists, and fishing nets with his grandfather before boats had motors.  Claud leaves to cherish his stories five sons and their spouses:  Leland C. “Peanut” and Gail, Gilbert “Joe” and Debbie, Robert and Tina, Cecil and Jenea, and Ike and partner Rick.  He had one daughter, Ella.  Claud lived with his companion Nancy Davis.  Claud was blessed with  14 grandchildren: Jamie and wife Toni, Anthony, Lil Deb and husband Chris, Jennifer and husband Donald, Brandon,  Nicki Lyn and husband Robert, Lauren and husband Ambrose, Dominique, Macie, Devyn, Justin, D’Amore, April, and Cayla.  More blessings with the addition of 10 great grandchildren (with one due any day): Evan, Kara, Jackson, Hunter, Lila, Lucian, Annabelle, Sadie, Ariana, Lotus, and soon to be Marlee.

Claud leaves behind his beloved sisters, the YaYa’s:  Carolyn Johnson, Laura Jones, Janet Tillett, Beatrice Robbins, Martha Beasley, and Betty Duncan.  Claud leaves his younger brother Ike, to remember their good times.  Besides his parents, Claud was predeceased by his brothers Sheldon, Ronnie, and Jackson, his grandson Anthony, and the mother of his children, Verlin.

Claud retired from the United States Navy, something that he was very proud of.  He often spoke of being one of the few people who had circumnavigated the globe both in the air and below the sea.  Claud was stationed aboard the USS Sea Lion, USS Thresher, USS Runner,  USS Kittiwake, and was a plank owner of the USS Scorpion.  Claud will be remembered by his children as a father who loved them unconditionally, yet held them accountable.  He will be remembered by his siblings as a most loyal ally and forever protector.  He will be remembered by his grandchildren as a man proud of his family, proud of where they came from, and proud of where they are going!

Please join us at the Twiford Colony Chapel, Manteo, for a visitation on Friday, November 29, 2013 from 6PM-8PM, and a funeral at Twiford Colony of Manteo on Saturday, November 30, 2013 at 11AM, to celebrate the life of our father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend.  At all other times, the family will receive friends at the home of Claud’s son, Ike, 400 Grandy Road, in Grandy.  Flowers are beautiful, but a donation made in our fathers’ name will live on forever.  Please make donations to the Wounded Warriors Project.  WWW.WOUNDEDWARRIORPROJECT.ORG

Claude was like a brother to my father, and almost an uncle to me. He was a loyal friend, and fiercely proud of his family.

Good sailing Claud, from your friend and the brother of your better friend (Bob Paxson). Your jokes pertaining to my service in the USMC were always a connection for us.

To the family and friends of Claude,
Thank you for sharing Claude with me! When I would hit rough patches as a teen and young adult my Dad or Uncle Ned would just say to me “quit being soft and toughen up”. Claude would always take me aside and listen to the issue, then talk to me about it and help me to make a decision. Then he would usually end it with some advice like “remember boy, you make the bed you gotta sleep in it, not them, so do what you feel is right”. I looked up to Claude as a Mentor, a fellow Veteran, and a positive male role model and I loved Claude as a family member. Not all are so lucky to be blessed with men such as Claude in their life. Thank you so much again for sharing Claude with me,my thoughts are with you during this tough time!
