Colonel Joseph (Joe) H. Hoffman, Jr. (USA, Ret’d), Grandfather, Father, Husband and friend, peacefully passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2013 at his residence.  Joe was a 31 year veteran of the US Army.  He graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point, NY in 1945.  His distinguished career as an Infantry Officer was highlighted by combat tours during the Korean conflict and the Vietnam war.  His decorations include the Legion of Merit, Silver Star,  Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal with “V” devise and 5 Oak Leaf clusters, Air Medal, Combat Infantryman’s badge 2nd award, Master Parachutist badge, Glider badge.

Prior to retirement from the Army in 1975, Joe and his family built their first home in Kitty Hawk.  An avid fisherman, Joe could be seen at every opportunity, fishing all the waters around the Outer Banks.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Patsy Blue Hoffman of Raeford, NC

He is survived by his second wife, Viva Barnes Hoffman of Conway, NC; his children, Col. Joseph H. Hoffman, III (USAF, Ret’d) of Niceville, FL, Michael Blue Hoffman of Kitty Hawk, NC and Ann T. Hoffman of Elizabeth City, NC; and two grandsons, Jesse T. Hoffman of Charlotte, NC and Michael R. Hoffman of Pensacola, FL.

Graveside services with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA, at a future date.  In lieu of flowers, Col. Hoffman requests donations be made to the Community Care Clinic of Dare, POB 1329, Nags Head, NC 27959.

    I found Joe to be a good man, my condolences to Blue and the entire family.

    Joe was an excellent man and a good friend to me. I have only known him since coming to Powells Point Baptict Church, but came to know him and Viva as good friends over that shotr period of time. They came to our services as often as they could. My condolences and if I or the church family can be of any service please let us know.

    So sorry to hear this news. We will always remember what good friends you and Joe were to us when we lived on the outer banks. Joe was so kind to share his favorite fishing spots with John and you helped me so much at the Sea Ranch adjusting to the outer banks life. We know Joe will be missed by many and remembered always by all of us. We will keep you in our prayers.
