Damon Meekins Gray, Jr, 89, of Hatteras, died Thursday, September 26, 2013, in his residence. Mr. Gray was born in Hatteras and was retired from the National Weather Service as a Weather Specialist. He was member of Hatteras United Methodist Church, one of the founders of Hatteras Volunteer Fire Dept, a recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine and served in numerous civic activities. Mr. Gray served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was awarded four Bronze Stars and the Silver Star and received a commendation from the French service.
He was predeceased by his parents, Damon Meekins Gray, Sr and Rosa Dean Gaskins Gray and his first wife Alice Austin Gray.
Surviving are his wife Nola Fletcher Martin Gray; three daughters, Debbie G. Hodge and husband Cliff, Rosa Alice Mayo and Analee Bibbey and husband Tom all of Hatteras; one son, Damon Meekins Gray “D.M.”III and wife Kristin of Hatteras; two step-daughters, Robin Boots of New Hampshire and Diane Martin Kelly of Redway, California; one step-son Robert Everard Martin of Harrogate, England’ two brothers, Ray Gray, Sr and wife Vandetta of Buxton and Hal Gray and wife Mary Lou of Hatteras; his daughter in law Peggy Gray; Eleven grandchildren, six step-grandchildren , seven great-grandchildren and one step great grandchild. Besides his first wife, Mr. Gray is predeceased by his son Harold Lawrence Gray and his son in law Gene Mayo.
A celebration of life will be in Hatteras United Methodist Church, Monday September 30, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. by Rev. Ken Davenport and Rev. Dwight Burrus. Burial will be in the family cemetery in Hatteras.
