Darrell Ray Dorman Sr., 76, passed away Monday January 8, 2018 at his home in Moyock, North Carolina. Ray was born January 27, 1941 to Lee Raymond and Olive (Morris) Dorman in Clarksville, Indiana, the oldest of three children.
Ray served in the Navy from 1958 to 1962. met his beautiful bride, Janice Louise Leonard, while stationed in Norfolk, VA. They were married on June 18, 1960. In 1964 Ray joined the Norfolk Police Department, where he served twenty-five years as a dedicated officer. He was a member of the motorcade for fourteen years and finished out his career as a warrant officer. He loved being a Police Officer during a time when being a Police Officer was a respected career of the community. Ray truly loved his brothers in blue. He retired from the city of Norfolk in 1989.
Since retiring Ray and Jan have enjoyed traveling, selling their wares, and spending time in their Florida home. Ray was always looking to join in on a card game or relax in his recliner with his iPad scrolling through FACEBOOK and a handful of his favorite candy, peanut M&M’s. He loved to spend time with his family and friends. Amongst the children, he was more fondly known as Poppy or Papa Ray. He loved this country and flew the United States of America flag proudly.
Ray is survived by his wife, Jan of fifty-seven years; son Pete and Lou-Ann Dorman; daughter Tracy and David Bowden a beloved son-in-law who is more like a son, daughter Theresa and Brian Gibson another beloved son-in-law with a unique and special bond with Ray; grandchildren, Chelsea and Matt Jacobs, Rachel, Amanda, Brad and Leah; great grandchildren, Kyle Thomas and Ivy Louise; and brothers Fred (Pat) and Glenn (Fran) Dorman.
A Celebration of Life gathering will be held on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at Norfolk FOP 1111 Harmony Road, Norfolk, VA, 23502 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. This is an informal Celebration of Life where we are requesting you come share your stories and fond memories of Ray. The family will be in relaxed attire consisting of patriotic t-shirts. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a charitable donation to the Norfolk FOP, an organization dear to Ray’s heart.
