David Ray Twiddy, 55, beloved husband, father and Dada passed away Sunday, September 15, 2013 in Vidant Medical Center. He was born September 24, 1957 to the late Franklin E. Twiddy and Leone Rose Twiddy in Edenton, NC and was the husband of Rhonda Barclift Twiddy. He was a consultant for Bank of Hampton Roads.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Tracy Twiddy Davenport and husband, Bradley and Ashley Twiddy Scott and husband, Jim all of Elizabeth City, NC; a brother, Billy Twiddy and wife, Sharlie of Myrtle Beach, SC; two grandchildren, William Bradley Davenport, II and David Wyatt Davenport of Elizabeth City, NC; one niece and two nephews.
Mr. Twiddy’s professional life was marked by a strong work ethic and high integrity and built on relationships. His first jobs were as a young boy delivering groceries and working in a hardware store in his hometown of Edenton. He began his insurance career in 1983 and he and his longtime business partner built their agency, Dowd and Twiddy, Inc., into one of the largest independent insurance agencies in northeast North Carolina. After Hampton Roads Bankshares acquired the agency, Mr. Twiddy became President and CEO of Gateway Insurance Services, Inc. In 2005, Mr. Twiddy became President and COO of Hampton Roads Bankshares and in December, 2008 became CEO of Hampton Roads Bankshares. He was highly committed to the greater good of eastern North Carolina. He served the communities of Edenton and Elizabeth City in numerous civic organizations, on many boards including North Carolina’s Rules Review Commission, East Carolina University Foundation and, most recently, as Chairman of the Albemarle Health Board of Commissioners. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Elizabeth City. His love of family gatherings, holiday celebrations and the Outer Banks were his greatest joy.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 20, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Joe Casteel and Rev. Craig Stephans. Private burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 p. m. at Twiford Funeral Home, Church Street., Elizabeth City, NC and at other times at the residence.
