Dora Wells Twiford, 99, of 401 Hastings Lane, Elizabeth City died Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born on April 7, 1913 to the late John L. Wells and Minnie Lou Bell Wells in Elizabeth City, NC and was the widow of the late Sam A. Twiford. Mrs. Twiford was a registered nurse having graduated from Gallinger Hospital in Washington, DC and later she became a licensed funeral director and was co-owner for over 50 years of the Twiford Funeral Homes, Cemeteries and Crematorium with her husband, Sam A. Twiford. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church since April 1, 1923, a life member of the United Methodist Women and member of the ladies auxiliary of the American Legion Post #84.
She is survived by two sons, Sam A. Twiford, Jr. and his wife, Claudia of Elizabeth City, NC and David H. Twiford and his wife, Darlene of Elizabeth City, NC; a sister, Frances Wells of Elizabeth City, NC and a sister-in-law, Patricia Wells of Jupiter, FL. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Sam A. Twiford, III and wife Jodi, Jacob S. Twiford and wife Meredith, David H. Twiford, Jr. and special friend Jessica Tade, J.J. Twiford and wife Karen and Whitney T. Waddington and husband Rob; 12 great grandchildren, Rachel, Julia, Samantha, Cort, Ryder, Salem, Ragen, Spencer, Callie, John, Bert, and Joseph. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Twiford was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret W. Foxwell and Helen W. Lopez and a brother, John L. Wells, Jr.
The family wishes to thank the caregivers for the excellent care and love they showed to our mother. We will never forget you, Delores, Monica, Melvia, Joyce, and Camie. Additionally we would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the staff of Carolina House as well as the doctors and staff of Albemarle Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, December 8, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. in Twiford Memorial Chapel, Church Street, by the Rev. F. Joe Griffith and Rev. Joe Casteel. Entombment will be private in the New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive family and friends Friday evening from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. at the funeral home and also immediately following the chapel service in the lobby of the funeral home.
