Edna Jane Wilkin, 91, of Suffolk, VA, died August 1, 2018, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Norfolk, VA, the only daughter of Bessie Lee (Belvin) and Gilbert Washington Carico. After graduating from Maury High School in 1945, she married the love of her life, Richard Lee Wilkin, Sr. who predeceased her in 1972.
Edna spent much of her childhood at her beloved grandfather’s waterfront home on Mason Creek, Norfolk, crabbing, and fishing. Even though she was an only child, she was doted on by her mother and four maternal aunts.
While residing with her daughter and granddaughter in her later years, she spent many hours entertaining her great-granddaughters with hilarious tales of her childhood and early married life.
Edna and her husband were tireless in working with the youth in their church, often being seen on most summer Sundays headed to Pungo with a car full of young people ready for a day of water-skiing.
After her husband graduated from William and Mary College, Norfolk, Edna began her working career at the Norfolk Health Department. She later worked at the Norfolk Naval Supply Center and finished her career working for the Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Norfolk, retiring in 1987. She then spent many years volunteering/working at Tidewater Adventist Academy in Chesapeake, VA as a teacher’s aide helping early elementary students gain a strong foundation for their academic career.
She is survived by her daughter, Joy Jackson of Suffolk, VA; son, Richard Wilkin, Jr. of Suffolk, VA; grandchildren, Rebecca Tucker of Suffolk, VA, Christopher Jackson of Raleigh, NC, Richard Wilkin III of China, and Romeka Karam of Sparks, NV; five great-grandchildren, Victoria Tucker of Suffolk, VA, Vivianne Tucker of Suffolk, VA, Roisang Wilkin of China, Richard Wilkin IV of China, and Elijah Karam of Sparks, VA.
Mrs. Wilkin was predeceased by her four-year-old daughter, Bonnie Jane.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, August 10, 2018, at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk, VA.
Memorial donations may be made to Tidewater Adventist Academy, 1136 Centerville Turnpike North, Chesapeake, VA 23320.
