Ernest Clement “Rabbit” Cartwright, 96, of 1669 Salem Church Road, Elizabeth City, NC died Friday, October 6, 2017, at his residence. A native of Hampton, VA, he was born June 27, 1921, to the late Roy Cartwright and Catherine Ann Meads Cartwright and was married to the late Rachel Dixon Cartwright. He worked at the shipyard, was a buoy tender, a mechanic and ran a grocery business, but found true happiness when he returned to farming. He was a good neighbor to all and was known for his hugs. He was a member of City Road United Methodist Church.
He is survived by three daughters, Peggy Barber of Chesapeake, VA, Carolyn Lane and husband, Felix of Williamsburg, VA, and Becky Morgan and husband, Tom of Elizabeth City; a son, Ernest “Bootie” Cartwright, Jr. and wife, Terry of Elizabeth City; six grandchildren, Stephanie, Melissa, Bonnie, Bret, Brad and Ashton; three step-grandchildren, Leigh, James and John; seventeen great-grandchildren; and special friends, Willie Young and Deborah Poole. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Warren Lane and Leah McPherson and two sisters, Louise Danaher and Lela Maude James.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to Community Hospice whose staff provided so much love and support to Mr. Cartwright and his family.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 14, 2017, at City Road United Methodist Church with Rev. Charles McKenzie officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., at the funeral home and following the service at the church and at all other times at the residence. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
