Ernest Linwood “Erky” Gregory, Jr., 82, of Riverside Avenue, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday afternoon, April 6, 2018, in the Chesapeake Regional Medical Center, Chesapeake, VA. Erky was born June 30, 1935 in Elizabeth City, NC to the late Linwood and Mary Glyn Williams Gregory and was the husband of Alma Squires Gregory. He retired as shop foreman with the Elizabeth City USGC Aircraft Supply and Repair Base. He was a veteran of the US Air Force and served in Korea. Erky loved making his rounds everyday visiting friends at Gibson’s Service Center and the Pelican Marina. He helped the Museum of the Albemarle to “Bring Back the Moth” and was president of the Moth Boat Association for many years and he hosted the regattas from his backyard.
Besides his wife, Alma, he is survived by a daughter, Ginger G. Midgett and husband, Randy, of Elizabeth City, NC, a son, Bryan Gregory and wife, Dawn, of Elizabeth City, NC, grandchildren, Katie Midgett, Evan Midgett, Blair Gregory and Jaycie Gregory. Also, Erky is survived by his sister, Phyllis G. Cargile of Nashville, TN and two nieces.
At his request, he will be cremated and a private memorial service for family and close friends will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to one’s favorite charity in his memory. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC 27909 is assisting the Gregory family.
