James Harvey DeLaby, 98, of 307 Spoonbill Loop, Elizabeth City, NC died Thursday, January 11, 2018 at Elizabeth City Health and Rehabilitation Center. A native of Chicago, he was born July 19, 1919 to the late William DeLaby and Emma Gast DeLaby and was the husband of Margie Langley DeLaby of the residence. Mr. DeLaby served his country honorably during World War II and the Korean War. He was in the US Army during World War II and was in the campaigns for Northern France, the Ardennes and the Rhineland earning three bronze battle stars. Following World War II, Mr. DeLaby enlisted in the US Air Force during the Korean War. After he completed his military commitment, he pursued his lifelong dream to work in the newspaper and publishing industry as a pressman. He was a member of the American Legion Post 84 and a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a dedicated and loving husband, father and grandfather.
In addition to Margie, his wife of 40 years, he is survived by a daughter Janice Foster of CA; a son, James DeLaby, Jr. of CA; a stepdaughter, Linda Herrera of Chesapeake, VA; five grandchildren; and several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Monday, January 15, 2018 in Twiford Memorial Chapel, Church Street, with the Rev. Don Carter officiating and military honors provided by the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post #6060 and Patriot Guard Riders. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home following the service and at other times at the residence. Burial will be in the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Miners Road, Suffolk, VA. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC is assisting the DeLaby family.
