Back in 1985 you were my boss, the ‘Senior Chief’ at NAVMASSO NAS Norfolk, VA. I was a mere YN2. You were so much fun to work for – you told the BEST stories ever! I admired you and looked up to you. As my mentor you afforded me opportunities that only male sailors at that time were given. You taught me how to be a Shipmate and not just a Sailor. I will forever be thankful. My husband and I saw you and Barbara again in 2007 and it was one of the best days in my life! Barbara, I loved when you told one of Master Chief’s stories! That meant so much to me to know you had taken the helm for him! We never really know the impact we have on other people’s lives. Master Chief Steely, you meant a lot to me and I will never forget you. My prayers are with you and your family. Fair Winds and Following Seas Master Chief.
