John Taylor Chaffin, Sr., 85, of 123 Shore Drive, Shiloh, NC, died Tuesday, August 22, 2006 in Obici Hospital, Suffolk, VA. He was born July 13, 1921 in South Mills, NC, the son of the late Mary Taylor Chaffin and Washington Sanford Chaffin. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater aboard the USS Lamson Destroyer. He graduated from Duke University Law School in 1951, and practiced law in Elizabeth City from 1952-1974. He was elected Chief District Court Judge of First Judicial District for the years 1974-1990 and served a year as chairman of the N.C. Conference of District Court Judge. In earlier years he was an active member and Sunday School Teacher at Trinity Methodist Church in South Mills.

Mr. Chaffin is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Sawyer Chaffin; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Anderson and husband David of Raleigh, NC; a son, John Taylor Chaffin, Jr. and wife Sandy of Shiloh, NC; a brother, Washington Sanford Chaffin, Jr.; and a half brother, Robert Chaffin and wife Louise of Marietta, GA; four grandchildren, Lauren and Sarah Anderson, and Matthew and Luke Chaffin; four nieces, Betty Jones, Carolyn Riggs, Ann White, and Alice Williams. He is preceded in death by a sister, Nora Mae McPherson, a niece, Mary Lee Brickhouse, and a nephew, Washington Sanford Chaffin, III.

The family wishes to thank especially the staff of the Memory Support Unit of United Church Homes, Lake Prince Woods, Suffolk, VA, for their tender care and support during his illness.

A graveside service will be held Friday, August 25, 2006 at 11:00 am in Memory Gardens Cemetery with the Rev. David Moehring officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 and at other times at the residence.
