John Wheeler

John Wheeler, 58, of 544 Poyners Road, Moyock, NC died Saturday, July 6, 2013 at his home.  Born in Norfolk, VA, he was the son of the late Michael Francis and Lula Mae Wright Wheeler and was the husband of Teresa Langley Wheeler.  Mr. Wheeler was a retired Volunteer Firefighter and Paramedic.  He had worked with the Crawford Township Volunteer Fire Department, Moyock Volunteer Fire Department, Dare County EMS, Pasquotank-Camden EMS, Dare Med Flight, Currituck County EMS and served on the Currituck County Fire/EMS Advisory Board.  Mr. Wheeler also worked as the Maintenance Director at Sentara Life Care in Barco, NC.  He was a member of Moyock Baptist Church and had attended Providence Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife of thirty-three years, Mr. Wheeler is survived by a daughter, Tanya W. Flores and husband Jose; two sons, John W. Wheeler, II and James M. Wheeler, all of Moyock, NC; a sister, Harriet Sloat of Spring Grove, PA; a brother William Richardson of Columbia, NC; and a grandson, C.J. Tipton.

A funeral service will take place Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at Providence Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Stevens officiating.  Burial will follow in Moyock Memorial Cemetery.  Following the graveside service, a memorial service will be held at the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Building in Barco, NC.  The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Twiford Memorial Chapel and at other times at the residence.  Memorial donations may be made to the Crawford Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 96, Currituck, NC 27929; the Moyock Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 81, Moyock, NC 27958; or to the Animal Lovers Assistance League, P.O. Box 266, Currituck, NC 27929.  Twiford Funeral Home, Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City is assisting the Wheeler family.  Condolences may be sent to the family at

    Went to school with Johnny and he was always a good friend. I know your pain a s I am still dealing with my own.They keep telling me it’ll get easier.     Thoughts and prayers are with Teresa and the family. I worked with Johnny and Teresa at Pasquotank EMS when I was do my paramedic ride time and afterwards as a volunteer. Johnny was such a good person to work with. He made you feel so at ease doing ride time with him. Several of us at Washington County EMS did our ride time with him and he was awesome. Teresa, may you and the rest of the family find some peace and comfort in the fact that Johnny is no longer suffering. Cherish all the wonderful memories you have of the time you had together.     Growing up with Johnny was so much fun! Loved his sense of humor. Then years later our sons grew up together and the apple did not fall far from the tree!     I was saddened to hear of Johnny’s passing. I can see his smile and hear his laugh in my mind’s eye. Ever cheerful, even when he was airsick he would laugh and joke. LJ was a flight medic on Dare Medflight for years and a pleasure to work with. My heartfelt condolences to his family.

    My heart felt prayers go out to Johnny, Teresa, the children and all the rest of us who’s lifes had that much more joy, happniess and love for having known the “weeble”. Just as our lives will seem to have a piece missing with Johnnys passing. I knew Johnny as a partner, a mentor, a teacher, but mostly as a friend. I am happy and thankful, not only that he is no longer a part of the pain and suffering that gos along with this life, but that his spirit is surrounded by love for eternity.     Thersa-When Kathy Pugh called me and told me of Johnny’s passing I felt so bad for not seeing yall sooner.
