Mrs. Marian Burrus Austin, 87, of Hatteras NC, passed away peacefully February 21, 2014 surrounded by her loving children.  A native of Hatteras, Mrs. Austin was born April 18, 1926 to the late Adolphus Burrus Sr. and Lucy Stowe Burrus.  She was a member of Hatteras United Methodist Church and a former member of The Daughters of the American Revolution.  Mrs. Marian was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who devoted her life to her family.  She loved to cook and was known for her Molasses cookies and her generous nature.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Bruce N. Austin Sr.

Mrs. Austin is survived by two daughters, Harriet A. Fisher and husband John of Jarvisburg, NC and Theresa D. Williams of Frisco, NC and one son, Bruce N. Austin Jr. and wife Dr. Amanda Austin of Manteo, NC.  In addition to her children she is survived by five grandchildren:  Amy D. Kelly (Tim) of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Ryan F. White (Jennifer) of Huntersville, NC, Dr. Phillip A. Austin (Kelley) of Manteo, NC, Matthew R. Austin of Kill Devil Hills, NC, and Joseph A. Austin (Yessenia) of Chesapeake, VA;  and eleven great-grandchildren: Katherine Reilly, Colin and Michaela Kelly of  Kill Devil Hills, NC;  Austin, Jay, Grady, and Mason White of Huntersville, NC; Sophie and Silas Austin of Manteo, NC and Adrian and Daniella Austin of Chesapeake, Va. Mrs. Austin was also preceded in death by two sisters, Grace  Bland and Lucy Allen Maurice and three brothers: Alonzo “Lonnie” Burrus Sr., Adolphus Burrus Jr. and William “Bill” Burrus.

Services will be held at Hatteras United Methodist Church on Tuesday, February 25th at Two O’clock in the afternoon by the Pastor(s) Ken Davenport and Dwight Burrus. Private burial will be held at Quidley Cemetery, Buxton, NC.

We, the family, would like to express our gratitude to Spring Arbor and the Cottage Staff, Dare Co. Home Health Care & Hospice, Dr. Ann Sumners and staff  for the loving care they provided our loved one during her struggle with Alzheimer’s. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Hatteras United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 310, Hatteras, NC 27943; Dare Co. Home Health Care & Hospice, P.O. Box 1000, 109 Exeter Street, Manteo, NC 2795; Hatteras Island Meals on Wheels, P.O.     I am so sorry for your loss. Although, I do not know your family personally, I would like to share some encouraging thoughts from the Bible. The Bible provides comfort during these difficult times. Revelation 21:3-4 states, And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away. Very soon now, we will never experience losing our loved ones in death. May these words give you a new hope.

    Miss Marian, like so many other mom’s when we were growing up was one of our mom’s..have so many memories, and the molasses cookies, she made Christmas ornaments, and when I came home she had a shoe box full of them for me. My thoughts and prayers are with you all..<3

    I am so sorry. I had a good time in your home with Miss Marion. Even when we were there just for a while in the summers she treated us just like island girls. Even better after we moved there. She was the greatest. Hatteras will surely miss her. Keep your head up high to honor her. Love.
