Mrs. Marjorie Small Berry passed away at home on February 9, 2018, after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Born November 13, 1928 in Weeksville, NC, she was the daughter of the late Gaston Small, Sr. and Essie Jennings Small.
She is survived by her husband of sixty-seven years, Arelion Berry; a daughter, Marjorie Ann Berry; a son, Murray Berry and wife Jan; a grandson, Arelion M. Berry, all of Weeksville; and a granddaughter, Kathryn Ann Berry, of Raleigh.
Mrs. Berry worked as a secretary at the law firm of Leroy and Barwick for many years and finished her career with the Elizabeth City Pasquotank Public Schools as Attendance Counselor. In her youth, Mrs. Berry was an avid horsewoman and basketball player. She was a member of the undefeated Weeksville High School girls’ team of 1943. In later years, she served as a trustee of Albemarle Hospital. Her greatest joy was spending summers at her cottage at Nags Head. Mrs. Berry had been a member of Salem Baptist Church since her marriage, serving as church treasurer and choir member for many years. The Berry family would like to thank Mrs. Berry’s devoted caregivers: Darrhonda Holley, Evelyn James, Janice Dance, Mary Williams, Mildred Liverman, Cornelia Brown, Rosa Felton, Keena Alsbrooks, Ronda Murphy, Karen Fisher and Latoia Mitchell.
A funeral service will be held Sunday, February 11, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Twiford Memorial Chapel in Elizabeth City with the Rev. Kirk Oldham officiating. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the funeral home lobby.
