Merle Hall

Merle S. Hall, formerly of Southern Shores, NC died peacefully in a Richmond, VA hospital on December 16, 2011.

Cherishing her memory are her husband, William E. Hall; daughter, Tricia James and her husband, Steve Hamilton of Berryville, Va.; son, Colonel Richard P. James Jr. and his wife, Cindy; granddaughters, Kaitlyn, Meredith and Emily Grace James, all of Savannah, Ga.; and her stepchildren Lorraine Ganczak, Sylvia Blick, William L. Hall, and Randall Hall; and six step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Patton R. and Kathleen B. Spracher and by her sister, Phyllis S. Murray.

A graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School Class of 1954 and Richmond Polytechnic Institute and Virginia Commonwealth University, Merle was a devoted and loving teacher who worked for many years in various teaching positions throughout the Richmond area. Merle loved her dogs and the outdoors, particularly the coast of the Outer Banks of North Carolina where she lived for 11 years after retiring from teaching. Merle maintained her positive attitude and determination despite her struggle with Multiple Sclerosis and other chronic illnesses. A special thank you to Lorraine Ganczak, her stepdaughter, for the love, devotion and assistance she provided to her.

There will be a memorial service on Wednesday, December 28 at 11 a.m. at Twiford Funeral Home, 500 Budleigh Street, Manteo, NC 27954. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or the Nature Conservancy.

Twiford Funeral Home, Manteo, NC is assisting the family with arrangements.
