Robert A. ‘Bob’ Roth, Sr., 88, of 1207 Little River Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, passed away on Sunday, December 21, 2008 at Guardian Care Nursing Home in Elizabeth City, NC. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Alfred and Grace McNall Roth, and was the husband of Elaine Sommer Roth of the residence for 43 years. He lived on Long Island, NY for 50 years, and retired from the printing industry after over 25 years to Palmetto, Florida. He then resided in Elizabeth City for the past 21 years. During WWII, he served in the U.S. Army Air Force for five years where he flew on C-47 planes as a radio operator. He was in the First Wave of Offense on D-Day, ferrying gliders of paratroopers over the English Channel to Europe. Mr. Roth was lucky to be one of the few survivors in his squadron to return home safely after Germany surrendered.

Besides his wife, Mr. Roth is survived by one son Robert A. Roth, Jr. and wife Sherry of Branson, MO, a step son Austin Gauthier of Rocky Mount, NC; two step daughters Susan Potavin and husband Thomas of Hillsboro, NJ and Nancy Velardo and husband Dominic of Port Saint Lucie, Florida; nine grand children; and four great grandchildren, two nieces Lynn and Lorraine Roth.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church St. in Elizabeth City, NC by Rev. Dr. Garry Vogelpohl. Burial will be on Saturday in the Pine Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Farmingdale, Long Island, NY. The family request that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Local Alzheimers Chapter, % Diana Spivey, 1032 Crosswinds Drive, Elizabeth City, NC 27909, or to the Good Shephard Lutheran Church Building Fund, 1259 US 17 South, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.
