Robert “Bob” Charles Mongelli

Robert “Bob” Charles Mongelli

Robert “Bob” Charles Mongelli, 73, of Kill Devil Hills died Thursday, November 28, 2013, at Chesapeake General Hospital surrounded by family and friends after a valiant and courageous battle against cancer. Bob was born July 12, 1940 in Washington, D.C., the son of Charles and Mary Mongelli.

After graduation from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, Bob became a marketing economist with the USDA for 27 years. After retiring from the Federal Government, he became a substitute teacher and assistant football coach at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Prince Georges County, MD. He later moved to Kill Devil Hills, NC in 1995 with his wife Carol, because of his love for the ocean and ultimately ended up working for Mike and Mary Fornadley of Michaels Gems and Glass, up until his passing.

Bob was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a true renaissance man with a number of hobbies and interests. He loved boating and sailing the Chesapeake Bay; was an avid runner, completing four marathons; he was an amateur paleontologist, and collected thousands of fossils over his lifetime; he was also an ardent historian, and was very involved in the Outer Banks Stamp Club. Although born in Washington, D.C., the Outer Banks of North Carolina truly was his home.

Bob is survived by his wife, Carol and their two sons, Brian Mongelli and wife, Catherine and their two children, Jacob and Olivia of Ocean City, MD; Eric Mongelli and wife Melanie and their three children, Amber, Noelle and Michael of Ashburn, VA

Bob was a member of the Manteo Baptist Church, which will hold a memorial service in his honor on January 12, 2014 at 2:00 pm
