Robert Sawyer, 86, of 103 Rosewood Avenue, Elizabeth City, NC died Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at his residence. He was born on October 18, 1925, in Currituck County, NC to the late Talmon and Adelia Sanderlin Sawyer. Mr. Sawyer was the owner/operator of Robert Sawyer’s, and U.S. Marine veteran of World War II serving in Okinawa in the bomb disposal unit. He was a member of the Eureka Lodge #317 AF & AM, Elizabeth City Shrine Club, Loyal Order of the Moose and VFW Post #6060. He attended the Wesley United Methodist Church. Mr. Sawyer was the widow of the late Doris Branch Sawyer.
He is survived by his fiancée, Phyllis Lane of Elizabeth City, NC; two daughters, Becky Sawyer Smithson of Camden, NC and Robin Sawyer Williams and her fiancé, Roger Gillies, of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, Randy Lane and wife, Michelle, of Elizabeth City, NC. Also, he is survived by six grandchildren, Derek Smithson, Neil Smithson, Carrie Smithson, Robby Williams, Mandy Edwards, and Darlene Lane; seven great grandchildren, Hayden, Makayla, Emily, Gavin, Hannah, Jacob, and Blake. Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Boots Bundy and Etta McPherson and two brothers, Talmon Sawyer and Leslie Sawyer.
Funeral services with military honors by the VFW Post #6060 will be conducted Friday, October 12, 2012, at 11:00am in the Twiford Memorial Chapel with Rev. Wayne Wood officiating. Burial will be in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives Thursday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 at the funeral home, also immediately following the chapel service in the lobby of the funeral home and at other times at his residence, 103 Rosewood Avenue, Elizabeth City, NC. The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his memory be directed to the Albemarle Hospice, P.O.
