Rosa White

Rosa White

Rosa B. Wallace White age 90, formerly of Chesapeake, VA and resident of Kill Devil Hills, NC since 1976, was called home by our Lord on July 30,2013.  She was the daughter of the late Joseph C. and Sophie Wallace and born in Chesapeake, VA on June 5, 1923.

Mrs. White was a member of Kitty Hawk Baptist Church, a registered nurse and member of Portsmouth General The Kings Daughters Hospital Alumni.

Survivors include her children, Emitt Wallace (Gemma), Sharon Morgan (Danny), Dottie Oakes and Donna Mathias (Joseph), daughter-in-law Nancy Wallace.  Other survivors include her sisters, Carolyn Green, Barbara Kendrick, Virginia Wynne, and Joyce Rochrbacher and her brother, Thomas Lee Wallace. Special Friends Clay and Linda Richardson.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her son, James Wallace, and the following brothers and sisters, Joseph C. Wallace, Jr., John Leonard Wallace, Nianza Emory Wallace, Walter Wallace, Sophie Kindley, Lula Meads, Mildred Taylor and Penny Wallace.

Rosa graduated from Kings Daughters Hospital, Portsmouth, VA in 1945, as registered Nurse and married the love of her life, Leon Francis White, Jr, on September 14, 1946.  She worked for NORSHIPCO for many years in the first aid department with her sister-in-law Dot White.  She not only nursed many men in the shipyard, but was known as the nurse of the community and assisted families when they needed injections, medication or just general care. She was the fist one there and never charged for her services.  She could get children to take nasty tasting medicine when their parents had given up hope. She had 5 children, nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Rosa was one of the first participants and organizers of the Dare County Senior Games and won many medals over the years as well as assisting as an official at the games. Rosa is known on the beach as the “Candy Lady”. Whenever Leon and Rosa would go out to eat, to a store, or see someone who needed a pick-me-up, they would give them a piece of candy to see a smile appear on their face. They knew who liked what type of candy in many of the restaurants and stores they visited. Rosa always made sure they had enough candy to hand out wherever they went.

A service will be held at Kitty Hawk Baptist Church by Rev. Donald B. Teears on Friday, August 2, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Entombment will be in Roanoke Island Memorial Gardens. A reception will  follow in the church fellowship hall. Friends may join the family at Twiford Funeral Home, Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00p.m. Memorials may be made to Dare Home Health and Hospice, P.O. Box 1000, Manteo, NC 27954
