Ruth Betts

Ruth Betts

Ruth Wood Markham Betts passed  from this life on September 4, 2013 at Winslow’s Nursing Home after a short illness.  She is survived by her husband, Oscar Brighty Betts of the home, four children and their spouses: Marty Markham and wife Joyce, Susan Goodwin and husband Kent, Jerry Markham and wife Linda, Ben Markham and wife Becky; four step-daughters and their spouses:  Betty Norman and husband Gary, Patricia Futrell and husband William, Joyce Arledge and husband Billy, Nancy Grzesik and husband Frank;   27 grandchildren, 51 great grandchildren, and 2 great, great grandchildren.

Ruth was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for 61 years and has served in many callings in the Primary, Sunday School, Relief Society and Young Womens’ organizations of the church.   Scouting was especially dear to her heart and she has received Awards of Merit, Scouter of the Year, Tidewater’s Living Legend, Silver Beaver and  the James E West Fellow from the Boy Scouts of America in honor of her 55 years of service to the scouting organization.

Her most notable accomplishment and greatest blessing, she would say, is her family.  She was always vigilant and devoted to their needs and showed unconditional love for each one.  She always had their best interests at heart over her own.

Funeral Services will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Saturday September 14, 2013 at 3:30pm with graveside service immediately following at West Lawn Cemetery.  Family will receive friends and loved ones for visitation at the church Friday evening , September 13 from 7:00 until 8:30pm.

In lieu of flowers, family asks that donations be made to Tidewater Council of Boy Scouts of America, 1032 Heatherwood Dr. Virginia Beach, Va.  23455.   Twiford Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC is assisting the Betts family. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.twifordfh.com.
