Ruth Brock Hyman, 87 of 143 Rosedale Drive, Elizabeth City, NC died Sunday, September 8, 2013 at Waterbrooke Assisted Living.  Born July 31, 1926 in Goldsboro, NC, she was the daughter of the late Phineas B. and Marie Guenther Brock Barwick and was the wife of the late Edward Talmadge Hyman.  Affectionately remembered as the “Raleigh Street Block Mom”, Mrs. Hyman took an active part in the daily activities of raising three children and all their friends.  She always had a band-aid ready to fix anyone’s boo-boo and gave science lessons on whatever creatures were brought home.  Mrs. Hyman was Den Mother for Cub Scout Pack 168.  She was wife to a WWII Marine Veteran, who each shared a place in the greatest generation there has ever been.  Once these tasks were complete, Mrs. Hyman attended COA and ECSU and became a schoolteacher at Pasquotank Elementary School where she later retired.  She was affectionately known as Meemaw to her grandchildren and family.  She was a member of NCAE and NEA-R.

Mrs. Hyman is survived by two sons, Edward “Eddie” T. Hyman, Jr. and wife Camilla of Camden, NC and Jones “Jay” Marvin Hyman and wife Karen of Wake Forest, NC; and two grandchildren, Edward “Tal” Hyman, III and wife Gwyn of Elizabeth City, NC and Kelsey McLemore and husband Eric of Jacksonville, FL.  In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Marsha Hyman Moore, and a brother, P.A. Adrian Brock.  The family wishes to extend special thanks to the caregivers at Waterbrooke.

A graveside service will take place Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Old Hollywood Cemetery officiated  by the Rev. Scott Neal.    The family will receive friends and relatives Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Twiford Memorial Chapel and at other times at the residence of Eddie and Camilla Hyman, 113 Sunset Avenue, Camden, NC.   In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Pasquotank County Relay for Life, 930-B Wellness Drive, Greenville, NC  27834; or to the American Heart Association, C/O Brenda Dail, P.O.     Sad news ! I had Mrs. Hyman in both 5th & 6th grade at Pasquotank Elementary. She was a great teacher. She also gave me alil mouse named Domino. I will always treasure that ! I remember the day she left teaching to take care of her husband , we really missed her but she returned next year. RIP Mrs. Hyman , one of the best !

    Ruth was a wonderful lady. I was teamed with her at PES teaching fifth grade, and had know her when her daughter and I were friends. The video tribute brought tears to my eyes.
