    Dear Carol,
I am so sad to learn that Steve was ill and now has left us. He was such a positive influence on my early career working with the Coast Guard. He told me things I will always remember, like “Never go into a space without a light, a line and a knife” and “Never go into a place without knowing how you’ll get out.” He taught be to roll my clothes so they wouldn’t wrinkle, and tried to get me to do PT (running) with another CG friend, Harry Vaughan. I still don’t like to run. He was the one who told me about my husband and said when he asked me out the first time, “I’ve never seen him do anything in a bar that would make him a bad husband.” What an endorsement! He was caring and enthusiastic, and had so much style – the only one with ironed coveralls for spill response and monogrammed too! I will remember him warmly always. Please allow me to express my deepest condolences to you and your family. He made a difference in my life and will be missed!
