Barbara was born on January 29, 1956 to the late Thomas J. and Phyllis T. (Cunningham) Aylward. She grew up in Melrose, MA as the third of eleven children.

Barbara served her country honorably in the United States Navy for 12 years stationed in Hawaii, Egypt, Philadelphia, and New York. Barbara was a dedicated and faithful parishioner of Holy Redeemer by the Sea Catholic Church in Kitty Hawk, NC where she was the Religious Education Coordinator and a Eucharistic Minister.

Barbara’s favorite place was at the seashore no matter where she lived. Barbara had an infectious sense of humor and shared it with all who were fortunate enough to cross her path. Above all, Barbara cherished time spent with her family near and far.

Barbara is survived by her devoted husband of 28 years, Jay Nickerson; son, Patrick Nickerson (Rachel); and granddaughter, Eden Grace. Also, surviving are three sisters, Joanne Miller (Russell), Jeanne Aylward, and Christina Tiernan (Sean); five brothers, Stephen Aylward (Marion), Peter Aylward (Sandra), Paul Aylward, Michael Aylward, Phillip Aylward (Giselle); and a brother-in-law, Kevin Keohan.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Keohan and Patricia Ralston.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 24, 2020 at Holy Redeemer by the Sea Catholic Church, 301 West Kitty Hawk Road, Kitty Hawk, NC, officiated by Rev. Dr. William F. Walsh, osfs. Viewing will be in the church starting at 10:00 a.m. prior to the Mass of Resurrection.

Condolence from Jimmy Morrison on July 15th, 2020 10:00 pm

My sincerest condolences to the Aylward and Nickerson families. I didn’t know Barbara, but growing up in Melrose in the 70s and 80s, I sat across the aisle from them at the Incarnation’s 10 o’clock mass, went to school with them and got to know more than a few Aylwards to varying degrees. There is a philosophic, pious, kind-hearted and warrior-like thread that runs through the family’s DNA. It draws good people near and frightens the rest. Everyone reading this will know exactly what I mean. It is a shame to lose any of them, especially one so young. My very best to you all.

Condolence from Michelle on July 16th, 2020 9:25 am

She was a wonderful woman and I will strive to be like her. Her kindness radiated and filled the room she was in everytime I saw her. My prayer are with her family and I know she was embraced by God with open arms. God bless you all.

Condolence from Peter Aylward on July 16th, 2020 7:04 pm

Barb,
You were an inspirational sister! Kind, compassionate, generous, courageous, and caring you were loved by so many. You practiced your faith through your daily kindness and thoughtful prayers. You were a rock during Mary’s long, heart wrenching and grueling battle with pancreatic cancer.
You were amazing!! You were fearless!! Your joyful countenance and warrior spirit were uplifting to all. You inspired and encouraged us through your devotion to our Heavenly Father, His Son our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and his Holy Mother Mary – our Lady of Fatima praying the rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy…a lasting legacy that will endure through our children for generations.
We were so lucky and fortunate to have been given the multitude of gifts the good Lord blessed us with especially our families and friends. Wonderful memories over the years of being with you will keep smiles on our faces, laughter in our hearts and the grace and peace of our Lord and Savior in our souls
I will miss your laughter … I will miss fishing with you…I will miss dancing with you …you had a wicked awesome, soulful, funky, groovy swing.
With all my love.
Your little brother,
Pete #4

Condolence from Rickey D. Jamieson Command Master Chief USN (Ret) on July 17th, 2020 5:01 pm

Condolences from your Maine family. As a new Command Senior Chief reporting for Duty at the Sperry plant in Ronkonkma, NY, I had the perk of having my first Yeoman to take care of my paperwork. As luck would have it was YN2 Aylward who greeted me on my first day. From that day forward, she became my “right hand man” and part of not only my Navy family but also the Jamieson family. She always made sure I had a toasted blueberry muffin with butter from the Frog Pond Deli, helped with the craziness that happened on a daily basis , and taking charge of our first ever Command Navy Ball. We dressed up in our Navy Blues and went around town collecting donations for door prizes and no one who attended will ever forget her greatest prize from a famous duck carving gallery. I know you are thinking Duck Decoy but she came out with a black and white sheep lawn ornament with one broken leg! We laughed till we cried and sailors actually fought over that prize at the Ball! When Jay showed up for duty, I interviewed him to see what his background had been and all the while I was thinking what a match for Barb. I know that in this day and age that is frowned upon but it was a kinder, gentler time back then! Anyway, with a little help from my wife Donna, history was made and who would have thought that a “cheesehead” and a Patriot would last all these years together! I still remember her hiking up her beautiful wedding dress, kicking off her shoes and dancing in the kiddie pool with all the little guys at their reception. It was wicked hot that day! I guess I have babbled on enough. We can’t make it to her funeral because of this Covid 19 mess and I can’t stop crying. Rest in peace YN2.

Condolence from Mary Radecker on July 17th, 2020 6:52 pm

To know sweet Barb was to love her, our hearts are broken with her passing. She was an Angel on earth with her compassion and everlasting kindness to all. Her infectious smile touched so many and her love for her Jay, Patrick, Rachael and granddaughter Eden Grace along with family and friends was truly a gift we were all blessed with. She loved Our Lord and her church family as well. You will always be in my heart sweet Barb and I Thank God I was fortunate enough to have been a part of your life. I love you, always Mary

Heaven just gained a beautiful person. Barbara was more than nice. She cared about everyone and everything. Jesus just welcomed her home with open arms.❤

Condolence from Susan C. Mirisola on July 28th, 2020 6:27 pm

This is such shocking news…I had no idea! And so soon after losing her sister Mary, my sister-in-law, also an incredible woman! Agreed there is something fierce, but loving and generous that runs through this family. I still remember the Alyward girls when I was a park leader in Melrose one year between college years. Their athleticism, their energy, their joyous laughter, their family bond was something to behold. I have a clear picture of Barb through the years of family gatherings together. One image particularly stands out of Barb dancing with her family at Kelly and Bruno’s wedding. I know that Barb was an incredible sister to Mary, a stalwart presence when Mary was moving through her illness and life transition. My deepest sympathy to all the Aylwards. I am so very sorry.
Sending love and strength to all.
-Susan Mirisola (Kevin Keohan’s sister.)
